Additional info & updates

I'm actually a current law student looking to transfer. I'm probably taking a year off after 1L to get my finances and other affairs in order, and taking the LSAT again to increase my prospects of getting into another school.

Any questions about the 1L year I'll be glad to answer. A word to the wise - the entire process is mostly hazing. Don't stay in the kitchen if you can't take the heat.

Your prospects for getting in are probably 66%. You may be offered admission into the summer program, which is a week long and consists of 8 hours of daily instruction and two or three major tests. That's just the on-campus portion. You are also required to submit work for three weeks previous. Last year approximately 90 people took PASO and about 10 were granted admission. It's a big gamble. Don't think for a minute that this is the "worst" law school in the country - it's damn good. The majority of our faculty are T14 educated with practical experience to boot. You won't get that at some "better" law schools. The small size is an asset as you get personalized attention - if you're looking for anonymity, avoid law school altogether. There are a couple of people here from Marshall. All the best.

Transfer

I am transferring primarily for financial and logistical reasons - I can't afford another year at 22k tuition, at least not right now. At a state school, I would be looking at roughly half that in tuition and fees. I also want to be closer to home. In retrospect, it was the biggest mistake of my life moving halfway across the country to go to law school, but it was a sacrifice that I knew I was getting myself into. As far as ASL, this is as good as any other tier IV, if not better. The only specific problem I have with the school -- is the technology here is still 20th century. It's frustrating. Other than that, everything is decent.

How is Grundy, VA? Are there opportunities for spouses to find work? I was offered the PASO, but I'm nervous about financial survival down there.

Work in Grundy

Work opportunities are extremely limited. The main industry here is coal mining, so unless you have a male spouse that would be willing to risk life and limb for substandard pay, there is little to no work. There are service establishments such as fast food, grocery stores, and the like -- but Grundy is a fairly small town with limited labor potential. The school is great with publicizing any opportunities that are made available and I do know of some people whose spouses work around the area.

I'm operating on the assumption that you are a law school prospect. If that is the case, I would suggest that you seriously consider taking a remedial grammar course before entering. Your legal writing instructor may very well rip you apart for such a grammatically incorrect statement. Profanity does not suffice either. This is just a word to the wise. As for the comment about my GPA and LSAT, I'll concede that my LSAT isn't what I wanted it to be - and without attacking the institution I could have done better. My GPA was low because I did not apply myself as an undergrad, plain and simple. Without even knowing me, you assume that I am a "dumbass." That's called prejudice, and there's no room for that in the legal profession, the exception being in certain motions, etc. I put this page up to help people out, and I made no statements to the tune of ASL in specific being a hard school. My comments are with regard to law school in general. Learn to read carefully. You'll need that for law school.

Turn off your non-registered comments. That will keep out the undesirables. I am the male spouse, so I highly doubt my wife will be doing the coal mining. Doesn't matter now anyway, they dinged me, aside from the PASO offer.

Hi, I was offerred the PASO program but I might PASS on the offer. 10 out of 90 doesn\\\'t sound very promising. I totally empathize with your moving across the country for law school statement. Why do you feel it was a big mistake? I\\\'ve been thinking about moving if I get sure acceptance at the schools that I applied to. I would love to become an attorney but moving across the country to put myself in risky situation doesn\\\'t seem to wise. I\\\'m not counting on alegal education to redeem my life or put me on the sure path to a zillion dollars but it would be nice to be able to wield the power of the pen. Anyhow, were you accepted to other schools besides ASL? Again, why the biggest mistake comment? Thanks, fellow DMB fan. ;)

1. Why was it a big mistake? I was not ready for law school. I did not give any second thoughts to dropping my life and moving halfway across the country. I didn't get any financial aid, and I couldn't really swing it financially. 2. Acceptance at other schools? Nova Southeastern sent me an invite to their AAMPLE program. I declined. Nashville School of Law accepted me but I declined when I learned they were no longer seeking ABA accredidation. Didn't include either of these because I didn't feel it was relevent. My advice in retrospect is to make sure you're ready for law school. Give it plenty of thought and reflection and fully evaluate the situation. I wish I would have waited a few years, got my finances in order, established some sort of personal life, etc. I was under the impression that I would never get into law school unless I went now. Big mistake, but sometimes chances are worth taking.

Do you mean law school? Also, when you say you didn't give any second thoughts about moving and everything, were you set on moving or did you just move because of the school? Just curious... I'm nervous about next year.

Do you know if they take your higher LSAT score if its 10 points or higher? Also I am thinking about applying there my scores are 3.56 and 144. Are my chances worth applying?

Congrats

Congrats on getting in ASL. Also, Dave played a killer One Sweet World opener with Rashawn Ross on trumpet and a wicked JTR closer at the N.O. jazzfest yesterday
