Extra Curricular Information

I've worked to some degree since I was 12 years old (24 now). I was raised by a retired disabled mother who doesn't have much income. I've been the bread earner for awhile. 5 years full-time work experience (all while attending college full-time). Not much in the way of public service, unfortunately.

Additional info & updates

Never took the SATs or any other standardized tests from what I remember. I was getting between 147-151 on practice LSATs, but a combination of nervousness plus external factors (I was getting evicted from my rental house due to me not paying rent-because my slumlord would not make repairs. I mentioned this in an addendum) led to my low score.

I'm really hoping to get in to New York Law School due to the employment prospects. I also don't really want to move to Michigan to attend Thomas M. Cooley. I'll gladly undergo a conditional program at NYLS just to be given a chance. NYLS is definitely my first choice. I'm a bit up in the air about Touro. They are in NY, but I haven't heard much good from them. Their bar passage rates are something like 11% below state average and only after 9 months can they say that ~80% of their graduating class was employed. Plus, Long Island is a much farther commute for me than Manhattan (I would live off campus).

Good luck to everyone on the 2009-2010 cycle!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

08/12/2009 - Waiting on my 2nd LOR so I can finalize Pace application. Its a long shot, but I'm optimistic. I wouldn't have to move or anything and I could commute there rather easily.

08/14/2009 - Called up Cooley to make sure my online application via LSAC went through without a problem. Person I spoke with said as of yesterday, the 13th, all was well and it was complete. I went LSAC complete on the 5th though. I'm impatient. Heh.

08/22/2009 - Saturdays are awesome! You are off from work and Saturday mail is normally the best. Today was no different. Accepted in to Thomas M. Cooley Law School! Part time (up to 12 credits) for the first semester. I applied for the term beginning in May 2010 but may need to defer until September 2010 if Cooley is my only acceptance. Still waiting on my 2nd LOR, but working on my attachments/essays on LSAC so I can be one step ahead. At least I know now that I will be attending a law school!

09/17/2009 - Senior year! Semester has started so I'm working my applications in with course work and my job. Tried to apply to Cardozo, but their online Application says I need to put my "Permanent Country" in. One problem...the interactive box in the .PDF does not allow for alteration of this field. Maybe if I let them know of this glitch, it will equate to admission? One can wish. I also found out today that if you get the LSAC fee waiver, it only covers 4 reports (which need to be sent to every school). After the 4th, it is $12 per. Man I wish I had rich parents. :-( It goes without saying that I finally got my 2nd LOR (on Monday the 14th). I'm trying to find time to work on the applications for those special schools that want specifically catered applications; like Syracuse and my realistic # 1 - New York Law School. Hopefully the fruits of my labor will pay off! Also, some schools need to open their application up on LSAC!

09/21/2009 - Just received an email indicating that my file is complete at Pace. I also followed their instructions for requesting an interview. I chose an on-campus interview versus an off-campus interview because I am close to the school and I think it speaks more to my persistence to be admitted.

09/22/2009 - Anybody working on a New York Law School application online; they are not accepting electronic transmission until October 5th. Just an FYI.

09/28/2009 - All these applications are giving me a headache. Hopefully worth it in the end. Hofstra finally opened up their online application.

10/05/2009 - NYLS application submitted. Admissions counselor from Pace sent me an email offering me several dates and time slots for an on campus interview. All set with that.

10/07/2009 - Email from an Admissions rep from Roger Williams. I left my country of citizenship blank. Oops! Not much else going on. Got a large envelope from UDM that I thought was an acceptance, but it was just "Your file is now complete. Here are some viewbooks to read!" :(

10/20/2009 - So I have gone complete at a few schools and applied to maybe a couple that currently say pending or are not mentioned, but I haven't had the time to really update. When I get time though, I will update. Feel free to shoot me some messages or whatnot if you wanna chat.

10/26/2009 - Had my interview at Pace yesterday. Saw around the campus for a little bit. I felt the interview went very well and I left confident that I gave a good impression. I'm going to update my profile at sometime, but just to reflect dates when I went complete.

10/29/2009 - Damn the Phillies and Cliff Lee!

10/30/2009 - AJ Burnett is awesome! Oh ummm, I got an email that my admission to Akron Law was declined. Are they a freaking ATM?

11/11/2009 - Thank a veteran today for their service. Complete at New York Law School. Application in review. Ave Maria sent me some mail yesterday urging me to apply. We'll see.

11/13/2009 - Complete at Wayne State, my mother's Alma.

11/16/2009 - Applied to Widener, Ave Maria, and North Carolina Central. North Carolina doesn't grant fee waivers for anybody. :-(

11/16/2009 - Applied to Michigan State as well.

11/30/2009 - Rejected at Wayne State. Kinda surprised by that a little bit. :-

12/10/2009 - Patiently waiting, like most. Just figured out I applied to Michigan State only part time, but this may work out to my benefit. Most people who have gained admission to their Summer Conditional Program appear to have applied PT. Not much else really. Just finishing up with the Fall 2009 semester of my senior year. Lots of reading and writing to be done before the 23rd.

12/15/2009 - Never added that I applied to Western New England back in September. Well, I applied to Western New England back in September. :-D I'm complete there and my application is under review by the committee. Hoping for some good news from someplace.

-"Denied" at Michigan State for part time program via their online application status.

-Rejected at Hofstra via online application status.

12/16/2009 - Rejected from Columbia (Early Decision). Totally expected.

12/18/2009 - Rejected from Buffalo. Expected, but was hoping as a SUNY student, they could make an exception. No cheap 14k a year tuition for me.

01/04/2009 - Happy New Year! Done with my final Fall semester, registered for my final semester for this Spring. Anxiously awaiting good news. Trying to enjoy the 2 weeks off before I go back to school.

01/11/2010 - Denied admission @ St. Johns. Oh well.

01/12/2010 - In review as of yesterday at Ave Maria.

01/15/2010 - The double whammy today. Application denied at New York Law School per their online application checker. I wrote a supplemental document expressing that they were my #1 choice and that I would be interested in attending their Summer conditional program, should they offer me the opportunity. No go. Now I am holding out hope for Touro so I do not have to move. The other rejection was from Widener per their online system. Looks like I may be catching some Wolverine Football games in Ann Arbor next fall (while attending Cooley Ann Arbor, not U of M. lol.)! At this point, I may just sit again for the LSAT after I have time to study for it for months. I devoted about 6 weeks, post-spring semester to study for the LSAT and nothing else. During the semester, I found a little time to study for it. My study really began in January 2009, but didn't kick in to high gear until early May 2009. Maybe, I'll give it 6 months or something post-undergrad completion. I can't really afford those $2-3k courses, but I may get a tutor to retake it. If you're seeing this and did well on the LSAT and wanna make some cash tutoring me, lemme know.

01/23/2010 - Rejected from Cardozo. No surprise.

01/30/2010 - Rejected from Pace. No big shock. Was hoping the interview would help me out, but I guess even a good interview and a continuous work history can't help the numbers for some schools. Also, rejected outright from Ave Maria. This came as a bit of a surprise. Oh well.

02/12/2010 - Rejected from Detroit Mercy. Kinda surprised.

02/27/2010 - Rejected from Western New England.

03/16/2010 - Rejected from Albany Law. Not surprised, but they took from 02/17/2010 to 03/16/2010 to review. Was hoping the long period would put me on a waitlist or grant me a conditional, but nothing. Here's hoping for Touro!

03/22/2010 - Rejected from Roger Williams.

04/03/2010 - Waitlisted at North Carolina Central. I would definitely go if given an offer, but they don't start making waitlist decisions until July. Subsequently, the lease on my apartment is up on June 30th. Puts me in a pretty tough spot, but I intend to speak with the school and maybe even my landlord; see if something can't be done.

04/12/2010 - Rejected from Quinnipiac. Not at all surprised. Just surprised it took them so long to make a decision. Also, I decided to stay on the waitlist for NCCU. One month's rent is worth giving up should the opportunity present itself. Anxiously waiting to hear from Touro. If Touro or NCCU don't come through, then I will study my ass of and sit for the LSAT in October. I know I can break 160 as I did on my practice tests, I just need to chill the fuck out and relax. Also, bad shit needs to happen to me at better times. lol.

04/22/2010 - Touro rejection via snail mail. Cycle over. Going to continue living my life and if I hear from NCCU regarding a spot, awesome. If not, December 2010 LSAT and I will have a date. Pursuing several non-law school related options as well.

07/31/2010 - Waitlist rejected from NCCU. That completes my cycle and I will be having another go at the LSAT; probably in Dec. 2010.

Question!!
Monday, October 12 2009 at 08:00 PM

Hey Buddy... When Thomas Cooley sent you your acceptance letter, was it a small envelope or a big package? Just wondering. Thanks

Hey

Thanks for the info, I now have a heads up when the mail comes. If it's a large package I should be ok.

Hey..seems we've got similar numbers and schools as well. I will be keeping track of your profile. Check out mine too. I was wondering if you included an Addendum to explain the LSAT score?

do not go to nyls
Sunday, October 18 2009 at 08:00 PM

I am looking to go law school somewhere in NY or boston area, but I would recommend not going to nyls for you. I mean 40K a year for a shitty law school, meaning it is ranked like 300, you should take the lsat in dec. and then apply to brooklyn or other good law schools in ny with more confident!

Best of luck

Hi, I see we have similar numbers. Congrats on Cooley. Check out Widener, you have a great shot there, they have great placement, and its my number one choice.

I'm going to do precisely that! Also, let me know about NYLS, I got rejected and fast, I apped about 4 weeks ago!

Still some options

Hi, sorry to hear about NYLS, but you have still got plenty of apps out. Plus, no matter what, you have Cooley, which is WAY more than I, and many others can say. I see you're intending for Appalachian. I apped there, although its isolated, it looks pretty cool. Best luck!

The cycle marches on...
Wednesday, November 11 2009 at 07:00 PM

Hi, thanks for the advice. I'm doing exactly what you stated. I'm holding out for Charlotte, but I can only wait so long before I potentially miss out on Nova. Only negative about AAMPLE is that's its expensive. Again, at least you have Cooley, much more than I've got! Out of curiosity, did you ever apply to Appalachian? The decision was mailed to me only 2 weeks from submitting the app!

hey
Monday, December 29 2008 at 07:00 PM

Tough luck on your decisions, I was rooting for you! I must say I was hoping that one of those schools would look upon your file and give you a chance ... If nothing else pan out, would you go to Cooley or retake the LSAT? Either way I wish you the best of luck!

RE: Andrea
Monday, August 10 2009 at 08:00 PM

I have not applied to CUNY and will probably not. I may after I retake the LSAT and hopefully, receive a higher score.

Wednesday, February 24 2010 at 07:00 PM

Sorry your cycle isn't going so well. Don't let people like sbwiggins bring your spirits down. Since your LSAT score was the result of unfortunate external circumstances (and not a reflection of your true potential), why not take it again and apply next cycle?

Reapplying next cycle
Wednesday, February 24 2010 at 07:00 PM

Good for you. Cooley is not worth three years of your life and $150K. The LSAT is a very learn-able exam, and raising your score 15-20 points by December is a very realistic goal.

Re: Widener
Wednesday, November 11 2009 at 07:00 PM

Widener conditional was not any separate app, they sent an invite when they updated my status online. Remember you can add yourself to the Ave Maria waitlist! Its on their website!

how long?
Saturday, January 23 2010 at 07:00 PM

How long were you in review at NCCU? I have been "in review" for almost two months now, and today they updated the date on the SC but not the "in review" status.

Monday, April 19 2010 at 08:00 PM

I know many graduates of nyls--one of whom said to me "the most important thing to me in a law school is socializing and having a social life." and this person has a crappy job and is barely able to pay back the loans now. form your own opinion from that - i formed mine about nyls. good luck to you. i'm sure you can do really well on the lsat....i say go for another try and you'll get into WAY better schools than nyls.
