Extra Curricular Information

Now that my cycle is coming to a close I figured I'd add a bit more detail, in case anyone finds it useful.

I didn't go straight from HS to undergrad, rather I've been working as a paramedic for about 10 years. 4 years ago I returned to school and earned my BA while still working WAY more than full-time. My workload definitely detracted from my GPA (finished in the bottom half of my class at a commuter campus), and I added an addendum to this effect to my applications.

In addition to working full-time as a paramedic, I work as a freelance writer (mostly medical/technical, but some healthcare and emergency related journalism) and as a disaster preparedness consultant. I also served as president of a union for 3 out of 4 years I was working on my undergrad.

As a paramedic I have a pretty impressive resume. I have held various leadership positions with volunteer community groups, done some grant work, taught extensively, and done some high-profile disaster preparedness work. I've also had some research published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

It seems that some schools were wooed by my atypical background, while others didn't seem to care and went with my numbers.

No kidding. Michigan sure is generous with the money given their ranking, huh? Went to March ASW. Great time.
