Extra Curricular Information

There's nothing too special here: a few years of work experience, pretty good PS, decent recs etc. So I was pretty surprised about Harvard, to say the least. The one suggestion I would give to future HLS applicants is to showcase something new about yourself during the phone interview. I don't think that beating them over the head with the same topics discussed in your PS is a good way of maximizing your chances. Personally, I centered my PS around a situation highlighting my leadership ability, but during the phone interview I concentrated on the particular area of law that I want to study.

Additional info & updates

- Akron - 17k per year, 3.3 stipulation (top 10-15%), several months after I withdrew they offered an additional 10k stipend.

- Berkeley - Faculty review email on 1/26. Only straight-up rejection of my cycle. How someone can get rejected from Berkeley and accepted to Harvard is beyond me.

- Case Western - Full tuition, 3.15 stipulation (top 40-45%), this was later dropped to good academic standing, Case actually informed me of this less than one week after the NY Times published an article that blasted law schools for attaching unreasonable stipulations to merit awards. Cause and effect.

- Cincinnati - 15k per year

- Cleveland State - 12k per year, 3.2 stipulation

- Columbia - Held on 2/2, reserve 4/14 (did not submit LOCI)

- Duke - Priority Track, submitted "Why Duke?" essay. They actually sent the email acceptance on a Saturday night! Obviously they're workin' hard in Durham!

- GW - 90k in merit (3.0 stipulation) 15k grant for 1L housing if I live in their dorms.

- Georgetown - Initially received 26k per year in need-based grants, this was subsequently increased to 40k per year in combined merit and need. To be clear, I didn't ask for more money - they just threw it at me. Fully guaranteed for all three years, regardless of grades or changes in my financial need.

- Harvard - JR1 on 2/9 felt like it went well, "hold" email on 2/25, offered a second JR1 after being waitlisted, he asked if I was still interested in HLS and if the things I discussed during my first interview were still relevant. It was a very brief conversation. Received JR2 the next week. (Never submitted a LOCI) Offered $28,800 in a need-based grant for 2011-2012.

- Michigan - Wrote very solid "Why Michigan?", was my top choice when applying, I'm puzzled about the waitlist.

- Ohio State - 12k per year, did not apply for full-tuition Moritz.

- Penn - Wrote "Why Penn?", initially offered 61k in need based aid, negotiated using GULC's 120k offer, Penn upped their package to 70k in response.

- USC - Did not apply for Rothman, withdrew before they offered any scholarships.

- Virginia - Did not write "Why Virginia?" essay. I refuse to submit something that the school never explicitly asks for.

- WUSTL - Full tuition, no stips.

Cleveland?

Why did you apply to Cleveland? I'm assuming you are from Ohio and maybe that is the only reason. It's astonishing that they only gave you $36K... Georgetown it all the way! Congrats on the grants!

I'm from Ohio. When I applied I wasn't sure whether I wanted to stay in-state or gun for a T14 school with more debt. So I pretty much applied to every law school in the state, hence the CSU app.
