The moral of my story is APPLY EARLY! Otherwise, you're one of the last applications the admissions committee reviews, and even if you're a very qualified applicant, your chances are severely decreased based on the fact that they're receiving several thousand applications for a few hundred spots, and they simply don't have any more room. So, for everyone applying during fall/winter 2005, my suggestion is to apply in October or November to have the best chances of receiving an acceptance letter. Oh, and write the additional essays. They'll only take a few hours and they'll demonstrate your interest in a particular school and increase your odds of admission. Good luck.

A $21,000 scholarship from Michigan isn't much, but it will help. I don't see a good reason to turn them down, so barring any unforseen circumstances, I'll see you in Ann Arbor this fall!

Additional info & updates

Fee Waivers from DePaul, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Southern California. (I also received, but didn't use, waivers from Cornell, Northwestern, Chicago, William and Mary, Washington and Lee, and several others.)

Tulane acceptance via e-mail 2/16, $20,000 per year scholarship included with admittance packet 2/22.

Indiana acceptance by mail 2/22, $13,000 per year scholarship. On 2/21, I received two emails from Indiana, which I found odd, considering I had received very few emails from them throughout the application process. Apparently, they had me on their mailing list before the acceptance letter had a chance to get to me.

Notre Dame sent a letter dated 3/3 informing me that they were placing me on their "provisional list" and asking me to accept my place on the list by 3/15. Rather short notice, considering I was on spring break and didn't receive the letter until 3/12.

DePaul acceptance in a large packet, along with $18,000 per year scholarship.

Illinois came in a large packet, along with a full tuition Lincoln Scholarship. They also tried to call me on 3/17, but did not receive the phone call, as I was away for the weekend.

The email from Michigan was a letdown...what are the chances of getting accepted from the waitlist, does anyone know?

Withdrawing from Southern California because I'm not interested in attending anyway, and why slow down the process for someone else who is?

I'm not all that familiar with the admissions process...is there any chance that a school will offer more scholarship money at a later date?

Looks like the schools have answered that question for me. On 4/22/05, I received two emails: one from Indiana, offering me their Chancellor's Fellowship, which includes full tuition, an $8,000 stipend, and a research assistantship. The second email was from DePaul, asking if I would still consider going to their school if more merit-based aid was offered. I will definitely be considering Indiana's offer, but I think I will tell DePaul no thank you.

DePaul emailed me on 5/2/05, increasing my scholarship to $20,000/year, with an additional $5,000 scholarship of some sort. Sorry, not enough to change my mind.

Wow, talk about a surprise. I received an email this morning, 5/5/05, from Sarah Zearfoss at Michigan, asking me if I would be interested in a spot for their fall class. She told me I would most likely receive a scholarship, but she couldn't estimate how much I would receive. Good luck to everyone else who is still waiting to hear from them, there is obviously going to be a good deal of movement on the waitlist this year.

I received a letter from Michigan on 5/7/05, offering me a $7,000/year merit-based Dean's Scholarship.

I think Tulane said you could get more scholarships once you put in your deposit. I went to a Notre Dame Open House and they said that the money they offer people that don't go there would be redistributed.

Wash U

I think you'll be accepted at Wash U. I had a similar LSAT (170) and a much lower GPA at 3.11, and also attended a Big 10 school in Michigan (Univ of Mich). They offered me $12,000 per year whereas U of I offered me $15,000. Thus I think you will not only be accepted, but possibly offered a good scholarship. Good luck.
