Extra Curricular Information

Currently living in Australia with my wife, who is here researching melanoma on a Fulbright grant. In the meantime, I am volunteering full-time with two legal aid organizations and a Track & Field group.

If my list seems a little patchy, it is because my wife and I are looking for medical/law school combinations that are either a short commute from one another or on the same campus. Most of the schools on my list are in the Southeast or Midwest, as this is where we would like to live after grad school.

A few tidbits from my resume:

-Graduated as the top student in major and minor.

-Team Captain and School Record Holder in Cross Country and T&F at W&L.

Work/Volunteer Experience:

-Casework Volunteer at a Refugee and Immigration Legal Service in Brisbane, AUS- January 2010-Present

-Intern, Queensland Public Interest Law Clearing House, Brisbane, AUS- October 2009-Present

-English Teacher, San Diego Padres Baseball Academy, Najayo, Dominican Repuublic- February 2009

-Judicial Intern, Courts of Justice, Nicoya & Santa Cruz, Costa Rica-April-May 2008

- Volunteer Spanish, English and English as a Second Language teacher, Lexington, VA, August 2007-May 2009

Vanderbilt Law Class of 2013

Additional info & updates

***All scholarship information is combined over three years***

10/21/09- Fee Waivers from Vandy, Texas, UVA, Richmond, Cincinnati, Louisville, South Carolina, St. Johns, Iowa, Houston, and Baylor all came through my email. Add that to the universal fee waiver for W&L, and it's a great start. The Texas fee waiver is pending application by November 1st, so I'll try to get that one out soon.

10/23/09-More fee waivers: Tulsa, Minnesota, Temple, UCLA, Akron, William & Mary, Notre Dame, Regent, Washburn (w/ an $18,000 scholarship offer).

Also an acceptance(!) to "The California School of Law", an online Law School. Nice to have a back-up, I guess!

10/26/09-Just discovered hidden fee waivers from SMU and Wash U. That will save a nice chunk of change!

10/27-Fee Waiver from Alabama AND 20 free iTunes downloads once I apply. Someone in their admissions department must have a background in marketing. Outstanding.

11/1/09- Six Vanderbilt short essays stand between me and the completion of these applications. Just need to rally one more time!

11/5/09- Almost done with the Vandy App. I have five status checkers now, plus an email from W&L saying that they won't begin to review apps until Thanksgiving break.

11/10/09- W&L Status Change to "Decision reached; notification pending." They just started reviewing applications last week. Here's hoping for acceptance #1.

11/11/09- I now have status checkers from all of the schools. Excellent!

11/13/09- IN AT UT-AUSTIN!!! It feels amazing to know that I'll be going to law school next year. I'm really flattered that UT accepted me, given their heavy in-state admissions bias. What a great way to start the cycle.

11/15/09- By the way, I learned about the Texas acceptance on Status Checker. I'm working abroad this year, so I'm still waiting for the W&L notification to arrive. If it didn't get lost, it should be here in the next few days. Here's hoping!

11/18/09- IN AT W&L!!! The thin, white envelope gave me a scare, and I sure was glad to read the opening words "I am very pleased to inform you...". Another fantastic day.

11/19/09- IN AT ALABAMA!!! The past week has been beyond words! My Alabama status checker didn't even say "under review" this morning, and I came home this afternoon to an acceptance and a very generous scholarship offer.

Still very excited about all of the schools on my list. There is not one that I wouldn't love to attend, for one reason or another. It will be fun to see how everything shakes out.

11/30/09-Scholarship info. arrived from Texas. A nonresident tuition exemption plus $7,000/yr. Good stuff.

12/9/09- IN at UF!!! This has been a very good start.

12/17/09- WAITLISTED at UVA.

Name that movie:
Lloyd: Hit me with it! Just give it to me straight! I came a long way just to see you, Mary. The least you can do is level with me. What are my chances?
Mary: Not good.
Lloyd: You mean, not good like one out of a hundred?
Mary: I'd say more like one out of a million.
[pause]
Lloyd: So you're telling me there's a chance...

12/18/09- IN AT WAKE FOREST!!!

1/4/10- IN AT UNC!!!

1/14/10- IN AT WASH U!!!

1/30/10- Just received a very generous scholarship offer from W&L! Still awaiting word from Vanderbilt and Duke.

2/16/10- REJECTED at DUKE. Oh well. At least I know that they took their time and really gave me a long look.

I'm still waiting to hear from Vanderbilt. I had a very positive interview there in early January and hope to hear from them soon.

2/19/10- "Decision Letter Mailed" at Vanderbilt. It all comes down to this. I'm absolutely on pins and needles. Fingers and toes crossed for good news.

2/19/10- Now that I have preliminary decisions from all of the schools, I have un-fudged my GPA and added a bit more information. I hope this helps anyone trying to get a sense of where they stand.

2/23/10- IN at VANDERBILT!!! This is fantastic news. I have been awaiting the Decision Letter (or box???) since the 17th, but this morning I received an e-mail inviting me to an Accepted Students' Day. That could only mean one thing!

My wife has been accepted to their Med School and, with a little scholarship money, Vanderbilt will solidly be our top choice. This is one of the best days of my life. The feeling is indescribable.

2/26/10- Just received a very nice scholarship package from Wash U via e-mail. Things are heating up!

3/1/10- Just withdrew applications from Florida and Alabama. These are two great law schools. Hopefully, this will pull a few deserving applicants off of the waiting lists.

3/9/10- Just got the letter I had been waiting for- a hefty scholarship offer from Vanderbilt! This is such good news.

3/11/10- In the timeless words of Dean Martin, "Wham, Bam, Thank you ma'am!".

It felt fantastic to tick the "Attending" box next to Vanderbilt University Law School.

I was honored to be admitted at VULS and look forward to spending the next three years in Nashville.

GO 'DORES!!!

3/12/10- Looks like I'm the first on LSN to put that little "A" next to "Vanderbilt". If you decide you're Vandy-bound, message me!

3/26/10- Fact of the day: Until 1986, the highest court in Australia was located in London, England. You have to love the colonial system!

Thank you! Good luck to you too, I bet you'll hear from them in the next few weeks. Also, we applied to a lot of the same schools- we rock at our choices!

Congrats on Texas, it's a great school,

If Vandy makes a good scholarship offer, I'm definitely interested. Texas is also on the short list, as are the DC schools (though I likely won't receive $ from Gtown, and thus, it won't be an option). Hopefully Vandy shows us both some love!

Thanks!
Thursday, June 25 2009 at 08:00 PM

And congrats on the Vandy scholly...is that where you'll be for sure now that they came through with some money?

Thursday, June 25 2009 at 08:00 PM

Absolutely! I don't yet know where I'll be, but with some Vandy $, it's definitely on my short list. I'm so debt-averse that I'm not willing to pay sticker for law school anywhere when I don't have to (that means you too, Nwestern, Michigan and Gtown...), so unless I get unlikely $ from Northwestern, it won't be in the running. Short list for visits looks like: DC schools, WashU, Texas and Vandy. I've already visited Nwestern, so if I did get aid there, I wouldn't need to visit to make that decision. Will you be at the April ASD?

congrats!

I love, love, love the grateful tone you use throughout your profile. Best of luck at Vandy!

Wednesday, December 02 2009 at 07:00 PM

Hey I just found your profile and I wanted to congratulate you on getting such a sweet deal with Vandy, and also on being able to go to school where your wife goes. Good luck!!

Thanks :) It's very exciting but I think I'm going to bow out of that one soon. I just don't see myself in Waco for three years. And thanks for the good wishes about Georgia and Wake. We shall see what happens! Enjoy Nashville, I hear great things about it.

Congrats on Vandy! I look forward to meeting you this fall.
