3 Years teaching Physics in NYC Public School
Parents did not attend college

Here's the DL. I screwed around my first two years of undergrad (see UF), and pulled together with a solid second 60. I went on to complete two seperate masters programs, and the latter entailed teaching Physics while I was taking courses. I decided to go to Law school in January, took the test in February, and completed all of my applications by March 1st. I know this was super late, but I figured, what the heck. So, if anyone knows how the following factors will influence the likelihood of my being accepted, feel free to comment:

1. Crappy undergrad GPA
2. Two masters Degrees
3. Late applications
4. 3 years of "public service" (you'd understand if you taught in a NYC public school for a day)

I seem to be on the "happy side" of that imaginary index line that carves through most of my graphs, but I'm wondering if any of the aforementioned factors makes me a unique exception, for either scenario (good or bad). In any event, my fingers are crossed. And BEST of luck to all of you. We can start being competitive AFTER we're all accepted to our best schools :)

WOOHOO! Got my first response, and you can guess what it was!!! :)

George Mason - Received message in voicemail congratulating me on admission to full-time program. Was told that admissions packet was in the mail.

SMU - Received phone call to congratualte me on admission to full-time program. Was told that admissions packer was in the mail. Scholarship info came on 4/10

Vermont - Received Priority mail envelope with admission info. Received scholarship information in seperate envelope the following day. 12K renewable by maintaining 2.5 GPA.

Cardozo - Notified of my acceptance and scholarship via telephone after calling to arrange for a visit.

Temple - Notified of acceptance via email, and told that paper packet would follow. Called to inquire about scholarship and was informed via phone.

UT - Ahhh... the dreaded thin white envelope. *Sigh* Oh well, I guess that makes it easier to choose a school that has actually given me money to attend :) I'd like to say I'm not bitter, but c'mon, who would I be kidding?

Baylor - Just got a letter inviting me to open house, but I didn't even know I had been admitted! Called to confirm and they swear they sent emails about a week ago. Either they made a mistake, or Gmail eats mail from Texas, because I got nothing. So now they won't tell me anything about scholarships because of some privacy act, and I have to wait until the snail mail arrives... *sigh*

Toledo - Called to press them for a decision in light of upcoming deposit deadlines, and they said it was still with the committee. Return call leaving a voicemail about an hour later with acceptance and full scholarship offer.

Seton Hall - Despite having verbally confirmed that they had recieved my third letter of recommendation, after calling one month later to check the status I found that they actually had NOT! So, my file was held up a FULL MONTH, and now the lady has the nerve to ask if I want to wait for the letter or just send it to committee. So, one month late, and short one letter, my file goes to the plate. Unfortunately, I'm afraid this will impact my scholarship bid. *sigh*

Brooklyn Law - May have an excellent program for all I know, and I'm certainly still strongly considering it pending their scholarship offer, BUT, they have the WORLD'S WORST SECRETARY! Has anyone else dealt with this woman!?!? I'm actually considering writing a letter to the dean to wirthdraw my application based on my dealings with this (insert expletive here). Oh well, that's what you get in NY, huh? Gotta love Brooklyn :)

Toledo, Vermont, and Cardozo - Wrote letters to the schools today to decline offers and free up the scholarship money for others. Hoping this will bring good Karma :) Hint hint... if you're NOT going to a school, call them and tell them! What goes around comes around... Good luck!

Baylor and SMU - Visiting the great state of Texas in the 100+ degree heatwave, and attending openhouses at Baylor and SMU. Baylor has an AMAZING campus, beautiful new law school building, new Rec Center, great staff, very impressive program, BUT, it's in WACO. SMU has a stunning campus as well, and not to be outdone, a new Rec Center as well. Dallas, however, has a bit more to offer than the city down the way... unless you're interested in cults.

Seton Hall - Voicemail notifying me of my admission, and awarding of the Chancellor's Scholarship (24k), and an invitation to apply for the distinguished scholar program (full). Hoping to visit and see if the latter is attainable, and if the IP specialization can be marketed down in TX :)

SMU - Accepted students day was pretty cool. Dean Attanasio seems to be an outstanding factor on SMU's resume, and I'm leaning more towards the school by the day. Tough to pass on all those full scholarships, but you gotta go where you feel you belong, right? Money's just money, and if we all play our cards right, we'll be rolling in it someday. Follow your heart and your brain, not your wallet! Good luck!

Brooklyn Law - Decision came via email, but no word on scholarship. Told to call back next week and ask.

Ave Maria - Envelope in the mail including Full scholarship offer

Hofstra - Envelope in the mail including Full scholarship offer

Fordham - Called office and was told a decision was in the mail. I went home and checked my status online to learn that I was waitlisted. Obviously, unlikely to receive a scholarship.

Decision-
And the winner is...
SMU!

Tough call, but I want to live in Dallas someday, so it makes the most sense. I'm gonna be a TEXAN! YEEHAW!

so are you going to go to SMU?

BAMA
Sunday, November 13 2005 at 07:00 PM

i still haven't decided 100% on bama, but i'm pretty sure about it. it was a difficult decision, but they made the most impressive offer of any school highly ranked. besides, their visit just floored me. they really know how to appeal to visitors. i visited SMU for their admit day on march 31, and wasn't that impressed. it was good, but not great. honestly, i thought i was going to go to SMU for the longest time, and bama was sorta a surprise to myself. but i think that it's a place i can thrive, and they'll really be interested in seeing me succeed there.

C'mon, SAY SOMETHING! Anything!!!

Okay, so apparently, over 1000 people have looked at this profile, and only 3 have cared to say something?!? I'm hurt. Then again, maybe I've just looked at my own profile about that many times. That makes more sense. Anywho... either way I think I'll go back to sobbing. Hope everyone else is as pleased as I am with their results. Good luck guys and girls!!! 1L is coming...

It's looking like it. I visited Baylor and SMU, and I know some people at SMU, and more in Dallas in general. If you could use some info, let me know, I'd love to help :)

Hey there, congrats on a great cycle and on your decision! I too am considering SMU and I would love to hear your thoughts on it (seeing as how I had to miss admitted student's day because of work!). I'm heading up there this weekend, but I would love to hear what you think and what caused you to pick SMU over other schools. Thanks!

hey :)

congrats on smu and your decision. I like that thing about "follow your heart not your wallet" I may have to steal that one. I turned down a full ride and will be paying 55 thousand a year :( good luck, i envy you being in texas :) when your friends back in NY are buried in snow, you will be thankful you took that over the money
