Additional info & updates

I graduated in 2005. I am currently working as a Financial Analyst for a large company.

PLEASE WITHDRAW YOUR APPLICATIONS AT SCHOOLS YOU ARE NOT GOING TO ATTEND. THE WAITING GAME IS KILLING ME!

Top Law School Choices:

1. SMU (WL) ** Not holding my breath** If I get in, I'll explode with happiness.

2. Mercer (Waitlist) ** 34% according to Chiasu**

6. Pacific PT - I applied very late. So, I'm still pending.
8. Gonzaga (WL - shocking)

SMU - I got a WL letter from SMU today. This is obviously better than a rejection. At the same time, I'm pretty sure it's a funcitonal 'no.' I've heard SMU apps are way ahead of what they had planned on. So, they won't be dipping into the WL much at all this year.

Tech - Deferred before Christmas. This is the school that would probably be the best fit for me. I have a 53% chance according to Chiasu.
I had an interview with Tech on friday. It went well. I guess it truly is a waiting game now. I got a funny vibe from the Prof at the end, though - which really made me worry.
I called the admissions lady today, and she said it would be another 2-4 weeks before they even started moving on waitlisters. I'm beginning to feel like law school might not be happening for me this year honestly. :/

Baylor and Houston - dinged the same week. Ouch. From what I hear, Baylor = Hell, and I hate Houston. So, I got over it pretty quickly.

Arkansas - Rejected. Pssh. Probably has something to do with my crappy response to their request for more info. I moved a couple of weeks before they sent me a letter requesting information. It took a while to get forwarded to me. So, by the time I got it, the deadline was already upon me. I hastily threw something together and emailed it in (they requested it in letter form). Well, they sent back a rejection about a week later.

Mercer - bleh... I'm a little surprised to say I don't think I'll be getting good news from them.

Gonzaga - I called them again today, because I was getting a little fed up with not hearing news. They didn't answer their phone (it was 10:30 AM). After 4 attempts, I left a voicemail that wasn't returned. I called again on my lunchbreak, and they said they would send something out that would amount to a Waitlist letter, and then HUNG UP ON ME! Wow... not exactly blowing me away with customer service.

I applied at Pacific extremely late in the process because I have still yet to hear a yes.

Geeze, I understand attempting to get the best class possible, but this is silly. Waitlisted at this many schools especially Gonzaga. I know, I know their apps are up this year. Come on. Say yes. Say no. I dont really care at this point. What a bunch of turds.

Also, I may or may not have applied at Loyola New Orleans. I do crazy things when I'm tired, but they requested my LSDAS report.

INFO REGARDING WL'S (all dates at the earliest):

SMU: the end of June
Texas Tech: Mid to Late May
Gonzaga: In Progress
Mercer: Middle of June
Arkansas: evidently in progress as I have been rejected.

Well, my cycle effectively ended today with Texas Tech's rejection letter. I feel a little shocked.

All of Mercer's admission staff was extremely friendly. The lady said there were about a 100 people on the waitlist. Seeing as their class is only about 450 people... it's not looking promising, but I still have that word: hope.

I won't lie. I'm begging here. I really want to go to law school. I'll give anything. If anyone from Mercer or SMU's adcom staff reads this, I will give 1 lung, 1 kidney, and any other extra organs I have to go to your school. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE... admit me.

I'm leaving for Europe on the 27th of June. I should have heard back from Mercer and Pacific by then (hopefully) and hoping to hear back from SMU by then.

Right now, I'm thinking if I don't get a 'yes,' that I'll take the CFA exam and then go for an MBA. We'll see how that goes.

Called Mercer today. They said their class is completely full.

***UPDATES BELOW***

Accepted at Univ. of Pacific. I'm not just extremely excited about going to Sacramento for a Part Time school. Today I was offered 100% tuition to attend Baylor Graduate School, and barring an SMU miracle acceptance that's where I'll be attending. It's been fun talking to you guys, though. GOOD LUCK IN LAW SCHOOL!!! I might just have to give it another shot here in a couple of years.

I feel like if I don't get a yes in the next week I will literally go crazy. Law School admissions officers are evil, evil people.

1. i think that you WILL get in somewhere... 2. i don't think backpacking in Europe is a wise decision...HR people do look at tenure, and quitting two jobs in two years doesn't look good 3. who knows about finding a job...its all about WHO you know... 4. who knows?

Gonzaga
Thursday, April 06 2006 at 08:00 PM

Yeah... I've heard the same thing about Gonzaga. According to last year's LSAC numbers, I'd be 80% in. This year, Chiashu has that number down around 60%. That plus the fact that the graph on this website looks favorable still makes me think that I should get in there no problem.

Your guess is as good as mine. The funny thing is they were one of my top choices. I think you have a good shot. I see that SMU pt is your number one choice. Do you work in the DFW area? Whats your take on the PT program, do you think it is looked down upon from employers?

Tech wait list
Monday, October 24 2005 at 08:00 PM

My acceptance letter didn't have anything beyond the form letter except for a hastily scrawled note that said "Hope to see you in the fall!" When I interviewed, my interviewer mentioned some aspects of my application that he really liked, and I know that's what put me over the top.

Hi there - don't you hate waitlists? I actually initiated the interview with Tech. I just called Donna Williams back in Jan. and said I would really like to have one, so she scheduled it for me. Have you talked to the admissions office at all or sent them a letter of continued interest? Best of luck to you, I'm positive you will get off one of those waitlists. Hang in there!

Looks like you're having a rough cycle. Things may look up for you after your Tech interview, though. Shoot me an e-mail if you want to know what my experience was like.

Longhorn helping an Aggie? J/K
Wednesday, February 08 2006 at 07:00 PM

LSU has that civil law program that's different from the other 49 states. They give you a degree in both, but you have to take 97 hrs. That's compared to the normal 85-90 hrs for a JD. Where did you hear about the starting salaries? According to the US News numbers, Tech has a higher starting salary. BTW bro, you'll get into Tech. I know two other Aggies with your credentials that were waitlisted and got in. Don't know about SMU, although their PT program is much easier. Mercer is another good school. They're one of the top schools in legal writing and have been in the top 100 for a while now. Keep you're chin up for now. I know it's frustrating, but you're not going to get screwed with you're credentials.

I heard my mail. I would call the office again and simply ask.

hey!
Wednesday, October 26 2005 at 08:00 PM

Sorry, I'm just now catching up on my posts -- did you already have your interview? How did it go? I thought mine went well, but I still felt a little vague about it. My interviewer was pretty stoic, so it depends a lot on who you get, I guess. Update me and we can swap stories. Did he/she say when waitlisters might hear???

SMU

The rejection came via mail; it was postmarked 4/26 I think. I applied to the FT program, but their assistant dean of admissions called me last week asking me if I'd be interested in applying to PT. I politely declined.

Math is comforting
Thursday, April 06 2006 at 08:00 PM

I went back and looked at what % of LSN'ers were accepted last year from Tech. It came to about 20%. Now, if we apply the same thinking to this years' crop, that indicates that all 6 of those with an index score of 2.7 + the 1 person with a 2.8 should be accepted off of the waitlist. So, good news?

good luck
Monday, January 16 2006 at 07:00 PM

I hope they let you in.. You're right. Admissions officers are evil sometimes.. I've been waiting for an answer from Pitt since October.

Love your math!
Wednesday, October 26 2005 at 08:00 PM

Oh, I pray your math is correct! :-) How ya doin? I'm still praying for a miracle. I really hope we both get in!

Tech
Monday, May 08 2006 at 08:00 PM

I got accepted to tech about a month ago, I applied to a couple other schools but I was lazy to list them. Anyhow, Tech was my first choice cuz its close to my hometown, so I will be attending there.

Loyola
Monday, October 24 2005 at 08:00 PM

That's one of the funniest things I've heard. It's actually a solid school with good opportunities in Louisiana.

Wednesday, October 26 2005 at 08:00 PM

I'm pulling for you to be accepted to SMU pt. It will be a great opportunity to eventually go full time there if you do well/like it the first year. Don't give up and hang in there!!! God has a plan!

Mercer
Sunday, February 19 2006 at 07:00 PM

I visited the school last week just to check things out and what not. It's a really nice little school with everything you'll need within the building. I tried asking my tour guide (a 2L) about the wait list, he didn't have much to say. Have you done anything with their wait list? Keep keeping on!

SMU

SMU
Wednesday, February 08 2006 at 07:00 PM

Yes, my heart is still set on SMU PT. There 2nd seat deposit was due on June 1, so I hopefully will hear something from them in a few weeks. For PT, my GPA is higher than their median (3.35 I think). My LSAT is lower than their median (158), but within their middle 50% (160-154). This makes my index right around their PT median. I really don't know what I will do if I'm not in. I'm hoping I don't have to worry about that! As far as you are concerned, I don't think that you wont be accepted. You are on 4 waitlists, so it's just a matter of time until you are in. Doesn't it suck when they don't take into consideration your undergraduate school? It a pretty subjective consideration!

Pacific Law! I told you that you would get in somewhere? Are you okay with California? I've been in Europe for the last few weeks for the World Cup. SMU notified me by email, phone and an admissions folder in the mail. Go Mustangs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BTW, how did Tech inform you of your rejection?

Congrats on Pacific..but good luck at Baylor! Mercer sent me the letter too....and even if Quinnipiac comes through I don't think I'll jump on it. I'm buckling down for a few months and retaking the LSAT (something I should have done a long time ago instead of sorta studying..) and reapplying to schools. Mercer will remain my number one so we'll see. Good luck in the future!

Do you have any idea when we should be hearing from SMU?

Thanks
Sunday, December 18 2005 at 07:00 PM

Thanks for the info. Vandy did not take a GRE score for either the Divinity School or for Economics surprisingly, which is nice for a change!

Loyola
Sunday, December 18 2005 at 07:00 PM

I noticed you have Loyola on your list, but did not apply. Any particular reason? Do you think getting a Master's from a reputable school will help one's application a lot, certainly if the LSAT cannot be brought up? I am currently debating between Loyola for law or Vandy for grad school. Any thoughts! Oh and I noticed your post on the discussion board concerning SMU. I am interested to see any comments.
