SUMMARY OF MY CYCLE
------------------------------
APPLICATIONS: 28
ACCEPTANCES: 14
REJECTIONS: 9
WAITLISTS: 5
WL -> ACCEPTANCE: 1

So, I'm batting a .500 on acceptances for this season. Pretty good IMO. Wish me luck on my waitlists.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hoping the engineering degree will give a little more weight to my painfully low GPA. Annoyed about the new "take the highest LSAT score" rule. Wondering how many additional schools will reject me as a result of the new rule. Leaning toward Intellectual Property Law.

All merit scholarships are listed for their value over 3 years.

JOURNAL OF IMPORTANT DATES
------------------------------------------

12/11/06 - In at U. of Miami, and Florida Coastal!! Both letters say the decision was made 12/06/06. I was also awarded $12,000 in scholarships at FC, renewable every year with a 3.0 gpa.

12/15/06 - In at Florida!! Came in a big white envelope, and the letter was mailed on the 11th.

12/18/06 - In at Ave Maria. They also gave me a full tuition scholarship!

12/22/06 - In at Indiana Bloomington. Decision made on 12/20/06. They gave me $25,500 distributed over 3 yrs.

12/26/06 - In at American and Hofstra. Hofstra gave me full tuition honors scholarship.

1/08/07 - In at Temple. Decision made on 1/4/07. The packet says that scholarship awards, if any, will come in a later mailing.

1/13/07 - In at Arizona!! $6,000 a year scholarship! I'm really excited about this one. Decision made on 1/11/07. Withdrew from Florida Coastal and Hofstra. I hope they give my scholarship $$ to other deserving people.

1/16/07 - First rejection... from Notre Dame :( The first of many I'm sure.

1/30/07 - Waitlisted at George Washington. Better than a rejection I guess. One interesting thing I noticed is that every other waitlist at GW on LSN also has an LSAT of 165. Weird.

2/7/07 - Status on Georgetown website says "Decision" but doesn't say what it is. I'll be expecting my rejection any day now.

2/9/07 - Decision Deferred at Minnesota. Anything is better than a rejection I guess.

2/12/07 - As expected, Rejection from Georgetown. Decision made 2/7/07.

2/15/07 - Rejected from UC Davis via online status checker. Decision 2/13/07. On the plus side, at least I don't have to check the website every hour anymore.

2/16/07 (MORNING) - Two weird e-mails today. The first from USC, telling me that I went complete. Really? It's only been 3 months. Why so soon? The second from Boalt Hall telling me the decision letter that they sent recently should have been dated February 13th, not January 23. That is all.

2/16/07 - Rejection from Boalt arrived in the mail. Quinnipiac admitted me.

2/19/07 - Admitted to Cardozo-Yeshiva. Awesome! Received a voicemail from the dean of admissions.

2/26/07 - 15th week, since applications were sent.

3/02/07 - Rejected at Emory. Decision made 2/23/07. :(

3/05/07 - 16th week, since applications were sent.

3/10/07 - Rejected at Texas :(

3/12/07 - Rejected at Boston College

3/19/07 - Week 18 since apps were sent.

3/21/07 - 1:15pm PST: Waitlisted at Hastings according to the online status checker.

3/22/07 - Rejected at USC... expected. Waitlisted at Washington and Lee. I hope I nab at least one of these waitlists.

3/23/07 - Admitted to Santa Clara. Awesome, but there's no mention of scholarship money, and there's no way I can justify going unless I get a little financial help.

3/28/07 - Waitlisted at William and Mary! It's actually a good feeling to get waitlisted when you're expecting a rejection.

3 to go... unless you count Minnesota, in which case 4 to go.

3/29/07 - Updated schools to reflect new '08 rankings.

3/30/07 - Another waitlist: Washington U.

3/31/07 - Emailed Quinnipiac and Ave Maria to withdraw application. Good luck to those on the waitlists!

4/1/07 - Withdrew from Santa Clara.

4/2/07 - Beginning of week 20 since apps were sent. Still waiting on Illinois and Arizona State. Withdrew from Miami... good luck to those on the waitinglist, and congrats to whoever gets my scholarship $$.

4/4/07 - I have to say... it's unbelievable that I haven't heard from ASU, Illinois or Minnesota yet. Seat deposit dates for some schools have already come and gone, and I've yet to hear a thing from UIUC and ASU. What's the deal?

4/9/07 - Week 21 since apps were sent... still waiting on ASU, Illinois and Minnesota. I just e-mailed ASU essentially asking when I could expect to receive a response.
I noticed that for last year's cycle, nearly every applicant who received a decision this late at Illinois was rejected according to LSN. That sucks.
I don't know what to think about Minnesota. I'm not holding my breath... I just wish they would decide.

4/11/07 - I received a response from ASU saying that initial decisions could come all the way through May.

4/13/07 - Withdrew from Cardozo and Temple. Too expensive without financial aid. Good luck to those on the waitlists!

4/15/07 - Seat deposit for American is due today, and I'm not submitting it... so, I guess I am passively withdrawing from American. GL Waitlisters!

4/23/07 - Week 23 since apps were sent. Still waiting for Illinois, ASU, and Minnesota. I sent an email today to the Illinois peeps essentially asking if they forgot about me.

4/24/07 - Well, I just got a response from Illinois. This was their entire response verbatum:

"[My Name] a decision has just been reached on your file and it will be mailed out tomorrow."

Notice the use of the word "just," as if to indicate that my email prompted their decision. Also, note the fact that they did not say that I was admitted. I have to assume that if I had been admitted, they would have said so. Therefore, I believe I have just caused myself to be rejected from Illinois. Damn my impatience!! ::shakes fist::

4/25/07 - Admitted to Minnesota!!! Got a call from the dean. Sent a letter of continued interest about 2 weeks ago.

4/28/07 - Got my rejection letter from UIUC :(

5/2/07 - I wasn't able to visit IU-B before the May 1st deadline, and I didn't commit to them, so I guess I'm passively withdrawing from IU-Bloomington.

Admitted to ASU. Small, white, rejection-letter-looking envelope. The decision was made on 4/19/07, but for some reason I didn't get the letter until today. They wrote a nice letter to me that personally addressed my personal statement. No mention of money.

5/12/07 - I graduated today!

6/5/07 - Got an e-mail from Hastings asking if I wanted to remain on the waitlist, and saying that the waitlist would be moving now. Finally a school not saying how overenrolled they already are!

6/7/07 - Admitted off the waitlist to Hastings! The Dean of Admissions called me at 7:00pm and asked if I was still interested... the day after I got the email. Then said, "well in that case I'd like to say congratulations!" I have until 6/11/07 to send in a $500 deposit. I hadn't had a chance to send a letter of continued interest to Hastings, so this is pretty surprising. Other than the initial application and responding to the email on the 6th, I basically did nothing to solicit further consideration. Good luck to you other waitlisters.

6/15/07 - Today is the deadline for deposits at GW. The dean of admissions told me that they would begin filling open slots, if any, after today.

6/25/07 - After much painful debate with myself, I realized that I cannot justify paying the high cost of attending Hastings. So, I have withdrawn. (I only wish I had realized this before I had put down the $500 deposit.) I'm sad that I'm not moving to California, but I know it is for the best. I hope that I did so soon enough to allow another person to change their plans. Good luck to everyone still on the waitlist!

7/9/07 - I go back and forth multiple times per day about my final decision (Arizona vs. Minnesota). Do I go to a top 20 school with a far better IP program? Or do I stay in-state, pay close to nothing, where my friends and family are? Any input is welcome. I'm freaking out.

7/16/07 - Rejected at GW. I was expecting it after several other "numbers twins" were rejected last week. I guess they're cleaning up their waitlist and getting rid of us low-gpa-high-lsat splitters. :(

8/9/07 - Received an email from the folks at Washington and Lee asking if I'm still interested. It basically said that they'd probably be offering a few more spots off the waitlist, but that they couldn't guarantee that they'd be able to do so before orientation starts on August 20th. I told them I'm still interested.

8/13/07 - I decided on Arizona. I agonized for way too long. Ultimately, it came down to money, and being unsure that I wanted to move to Minnesota. So, that's it ladies and gentlemen. Unless of course one of my other waitlisters gives me a call and messes with my head.

8/20/07 - I started classes at Arizona today, only to get a call from Washington and Lee telling me I'm in off the waitlist. In addition, William and Mary has notified me that I will not be accepted off the waitlist. Finally, Minnesota called and asked if they could do anything to persuade me to come anyway.

8/21/07 - WL->Rejected from WUSTL via e-mail. Withdrew from Washington and Lee. Cycle is now entirely over. Closure at every school. Time to move on. Good luck to everyone next cycle!

9/17/07 - Law School sucks! Don't go!

Congrats on your acceptances so far. I can't believe you have not heard back from ASU yet...you're my litmus test for them. As far as the new LSAT rule I think it will be insignificant for your score. Good luck!! Mike

I love ASU's programs, especially the committee on law and philosophy. I wanted to apply to UA, but I just couldn't see myself moving again (I live a ten minute bike ride away from ASU). So I am staying put for now. If it doesn't work this year then I will likely wait a few years and hit a lot of schools hard like you did. Mike

congrats!

On all of your acceptances! Alos congrats on being the only person I have found that actually applied to more places than me! Where are you thinking of going? Good luck!

Would you go to wash u, U of IL, or UT if you got into those? Austin is the greatest city ever! My opinion is a bit biased since I have lived here for 24 years, but it really is a fun place with amazing weather. Did Quinnipiac send you like 30 emails and letters asking you to apply and telling you about their programs? I have gotten a ridiculous amount of mail from them! Arizona is a great school. I am thinking about the University of Arizona if I get in. Hope all goes well and let me know if you come to Austin!

I really don't have a snow ball's chance in hell at getting into UT. The only reason I might have a tiny chance is that my dad is good friends with a bunch of the teachers and he knows the dean as well. I have a really weird last name and they all know that I am applying... But even with that, I am still waiting for hell to freeze over! Do you have myspace/facebook?

Illinois
Wednesday, January 31 2007 at 07:00 PM

I hadn't heard from them at all. I just went and emailed all of the schools I thought I might have a chance or even partial chance at (ie: not Harvard or UCLA) and told them that I was really interested in their school but that I had seat deposit deadlines approaching so was wondering when their latest admission letters went out. They all emailed me back and gave me a pretty good idea of when I should know by.

thanks

thx for the msg. i'm leaning towards UT right now. any thoughts?

Thanks
Tuesday, April 18 2006 at 08:00 PM

Thanks for the love, man. I think i had it ruled out anyway, but it still sucked to get the letter from ASU. Good luck on the rest of your cycle. How serious are you about American?

hmmm
Wednesday, January 31 2007 at 07:00 PM

Thats really funny that you just left that comment bc I received a waitlist in the mail from AZ about 5 minutes ago! It really sucks though and I don't think there is any way I could go there bc they don't make any decisions about people on their waitlist until June! I have already gotten 2 extensions from IN and the last one is May 1. I visited there and loved it, plus have family in that area, plus got somewhat of a scholarship, so I think that is where I am going. Where do you think you will be attending? Come to IN with me! lol

Wednesday, January 31 2007 at 07:00 PM

I am waiting on IL too, they said they had deferred me and forgot to send me an email telling me that and that they would tell me by April 20th. I know I don't have a chance, but whatever. Plus I totally here u on the o $$ from SCU. I visited there for undergrad and it is gorgeous, but tragically expensive to live and go to school there!

ok
Wednesday, January 31 2007 at 07:00 PM

that facebook link wasn't working for some reason. Try mine. I went to IN's admitted student's day thing and it was really cool. I would say the thing that I like best about it is that it is a top ranked school, but doesn't have that overly competitive back biting feel to it that a lot of law schools seem to have. They are all really close, seemed to have awesome job placement/intern placement

AND
Wednesday, January 31 2007 at 07:00 PM

they seemed to have awesome teachers. This one couple who teaches graduated one and two from Harvard law and leads programs every summer to third world countries like Burma to draft their constitutions. It is a college town and only 30 min from Indy. I was worried about it being to small, but it reminded me a bit of austin in the college town sense and is really pretty and safe. I would definitely fly out and check it out. They might even reimburse you.

yeah, az is sloooow

i know it did take a while. i'm torn between ASU and Pepperdine. Where you leaning towards? U of A? UF? Still waiting on top choices? GOOD LUCK WITH THE REST OF THE CYCLE!

Funny you should mention, I actually just got back from visiting Tucson this past Sun-Tues. Beautiful area, terrific food, but not a good fit for me. The neighborhoods I could afford to live in were neighborhoods I didn't like, and I thought it was pretty hot (while everyone else was complaining about freezing to death!) My conclusion was that Tucson would be a great place to visit, but not a good place for me to live for 3+ years. Good luck re: ASU, they sent me an e-mail a couple days ago saying I was in, but I still haven't received the snailmail.

Not to sound like a major sell out, but I'm envious of your scholarship offers and will definitely be reapplying to numerous schools if I don't get into ASU. Good luck hearing from them--I'm surprised you have not thrown in the towel.

Actually, I'm tossed up between Denver, Idaho, and Wyoming. To be honest, I have no real desire to work in the private sector in a big city, billing 2500 hours a year doing mergers & acquisitions and whatnot. I'd honestly rather work as a prosecutor or for the govt, so I've decided to focus on schools that will place me in an area I really WANT to live -- the central and northern Rockies. My gameplan is to work my ass off, graduate near the top of my class, and get the pick of the litter jobs in the region; I don't want to be in the situation where, if wind up being in the middle of the pack, I'd pretty much be stuck working in Indy or Peoria.

I am attached to this area (Phx) through my work and hobbies. But if I am not in school for August, I will be applying there in September. I'd like to tour it sometime in between since I have never seen the campus.

UI vs., well, UI and IU
Wednesday, March 07 2007 at 07:00 PM

Honestly, I'm leaning towards Idaho at the moment. Several reasons: 1) I'm looking at public sector work, and those folks generally earn the same regardless of where you go. 2) Placement. REALLY don't want to work in the midwest or Arizona. I want to either come back to AK to practice, or work in ID, CO, or MT. Thus, I'm looking at schools that place there. 3) I have a better chance, statistically speaking, of being near the top of my class at schools with lower grades/LSATs than I do at a place like Illinois. With a seat on law review and a top 10% ranking at a regional T3, I have a much better shot of landing a job in that region than a middle-of-the-pack ranking/GPA at IL or IN. 4) Tuition. Right now I'm gonna be paying, at max, in the neighborhood of $14-15K annually in terms of tuition. Combined with low costs of living in those regions, I have a lower debt load upon graduation. That's what nixed places like Seattle U and Lewis & Clark, I just couldn't justify paying $26K a year plus god knows how much for rent when I had cheaper options on the table. IL and IN are high-ranked, but they aren't quite there in terms of being "national placement schools." If I had gotten into Harvard, it'd be a different story. But I didn't. Hope that helps clarify my thought process. Best of luck to ya!

I bet
Wednesday, January 31 2007 at 07:00 PM

you got accepted! I was put on priority waitlist (not sure how the heck that happened). SO I am sure they accepted you. If anything, an email just shows them that you are still interested! Maybe I will still see you ..but at Illinois! I don't know. I am really confused now.

I'm
Wednesday, January 31 2007 at 07:00 PM

not sure. I may try to see if they will let me defer admission for a year. Do you know if they let you do that? I looked on their website and couldn't figure it out... I have already signed a lease for a year here, signed up for the sept. LSAT, and signed up for a Testmasters prep class! (I am not waiting till the last minute this time!) I really do want to go to Illinois, but then again, I may have a better chance of getting a scholarship with a higher LSAT... I don't know.. I would just like to go straight in, but they said they let people in off the priority waitlist up until mid august and I can't just drop my whole life here and bank on that chance.... You are right... Very confusing! I bet you five bucks you got in!

Congratulations!!!

On Minnesota!! Can you tell them to call me? lol. Seriously though, let me know when you get into UIUC. I will be expecting a five dollar check in the mail.

Sounds Good

That stinks! Ok, email me your address and I'll send a check : ). Seriously though, your got into Minnesota! Minnesota is a waaay better school. I think the only reason I am still being considered might be my personal statement... Because I can't think of any other reason why! So where are you now with decisions?

I'm waiting another year. I figure what have I got to lose at this point? My score will most likely just get better... PLUS, I think I might need a year off. Already signed up for the prep class and the September AND December LSAT... What about you?

thanks

thanks for the congrats on washU, all i did was write a short LOCI (admissions office said was pretty much worthless but i sent it anyways) and called them once. maybe im a just a little lucky to get pulled from the WL so early. good luck on the rest of your WL schools.

are you going with UMN or UA? considering that UA will cost you very little, and that you're in a good position for patent law, I would probably be leaning towards them. even if you aren't focusing on patent law, the salary ranges for the two schools are roughly the same. and it's where you live.

UA vs UMN

Yeah, I guess only having one patent class is a negative. Do you know what percent of students are science/engineering majors at UA? They say that you learn most things on the job anyway, but I'm sure the background at UMN would be helpful. One of the IP professors at UMN touted the IP students' abilities to work part time during the year due to the location. This would cut down on costs, but I personally wouldn't want to harm my school performance by doing something like that. I guess part of it should depend on where you want to work afterwards. UMN isn't as national of a school as some others, but with your background I'm not sure that matters. With UA it might. UMN won't be cheap at full tuition, and cost of living is substantial there, but I wouldn't do something you'd regret if you really want to go there. I'm sure the folks over at LSD have some input.

Heya, you posted a comment on my page waaayyy back when we were both waitlisted at Hastings, and I never got around to responding. Anyway, we have practically the same numbers, and I'm pretty sure you're in my small section at U of A now. Weird! Now I'm wondering who you are...hmm....

Hola, senor! I only applied to Notre Dame because it was free, and because I thought Michigan would laugh at me. I already withdrew my app--hopefully someone more deserving will get in. How's everything in school? What's up with your wacko classmate?

Yeah--this makes the decision much easier, right?
