Extra Curricular Information

I will be attending University of the Pacific - McGeorge School of Law this Fall!

For anyone curious, I asked for reconsideration of my scholarship at Marquette, DePaul, and Pacific by sending in a letter describing my other offers and explaining why I liked their school (the only school where I told them they were my top choice was Pacific, though). Marquette and DePaul shot me down fairly quickly. I spoke to the assistant dean of admissions at Pacific after my letter and offers were received, and he was able to get an additional $5,000 per year approved for me in late March. Apparently scholarship negotiating does work once in a while. :)

It was very difficult to turn down the scholarship and fellowship at Hamline, and I can honestly say that I was really impressed by the faculty at their school. If anyone's considering it, it's a good choice for Minneapolis-St. Paul work after graduation.

____________
Some of the junk I put in my application that apparently makes me special:
-Started college at age 15; received my 2 year degree at age 17
-Speak English, French, and Hebrew proficiently. Know bits and pieces of Arabic (Fousha dialect), German, Spanish, and Italian
-Figure skater on a national level synchronized skating team (they placed 3rd at Nationals in the junior division this year)
-Promoter of Adult Figure Skating; 2006 National bronze medalist in the open Masters division & 2007 State silver medalist
-Worked part-time 25-30 hours per week throughout undergrad
-Held various research positions on campus
-TA for a junior level history class
-Successfully defended a summa level thesis and graduated summa cum laude with high honors

Yes, my resume was pretty darn long. I also included an addendum to my LSAT scores, describing my history of poor standardized tests.

My majors were Jewish Studies, Neuroimaging Psychology, and Religious Studies with a minor in Modern and Biblical Hebrew

I took two years off between undergrad and law school, but originally applied in 2005 for law school, became ill, and withdrew from the schools I got into. Been working as a paralegal full-time and as an academic research assistant for one of my former professors part-time. My LSN username for the 2004-05 cycle is matokah

Additional info & updates

Received = the date schools requested my LSDAS report.
Complete = the date a school notified me of my status
Decision = the date I received notification

(USD and UCLA didn't ever notify me that I was complete)

__________
In an effort to make this shorter, heres the Cliffs Notes version of what Id written before:

Acceptances:
-DePaul: Large white envelope, scholarship came with acceptance, 8K/year with a 3.3 GPA requirement
-Hamline: Phone call from dean of admissions followed by small envelope, scholarship decided one month later (mid-January), 22,800/year with a 3.0 GPA requirement, invited to apply for the Bakken Fellowship in early March, awarded Bakken Fellowship in late March, given $6K over 2L and 3L years to pursue research independently if 3.0 GPA is maintained
-Loyola (LA): Large white envelope, accepted into the part-time evening program

-Loyola Chicago: Small envelope with FAQ paper about the waitlist, said more decision would be made after the first deposit was received from accepted students
-Minnesota: Deferred in early December, received a few emails about remaining on the deferral list and about how they cant make a decision until after admitted students have sent in their first deposits. Sent continued letter of interest on 1/22; received the rejection letter on 5/30/07
-USD: Envelope with 3 papers saying to send in the first letter by 27 April to reserve a spot on the waitlist. There's also a letter to send in by sometime in May to confirm your interest in the waitlist.

Or, a few months from now when the rejections start pouring in, I'll know it's because I couldn't write a perfect personal statement. :-) Thanks, and good luck.

Thanks!

I think you're gpa will really help, I should have thought about that a bit more. But as long as I get out of the cold midwestern winter I'll be happy!

Congrats

Hey, congrats on Marquette! The more I talk to my Profs. about the school the better it is sounding. Good luck with the rest of your cycle.

UCLA
Monday, July 17 2006 at 08:00 PM

Actually I wrote the UCLA special interest essay on my interest in middle eastern studies and my research on the iranian revolution. I am more interested in environmental law and comparative intl law than race studies. Anyways thanks for the kind words and good luck with the cycle!

and hey
Monday, July 17 2006 at 08:00 PM

congrats to you on your two acceptances! Last year I met an alum of my school who loved Marquette and had just finished a clerkship in DC. A friend of mine is a Hamline 1L this year and also loves it ... but by the look of your apps you, like me, are at least making some attempt to get the HELL out of the cold...

CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations on two awesome acceptances!! That is so exciting...start celebrating!

You have the most detailed profile ever! LOL. USD acceptance makes me feel amazing! Great way to start things off. Best luck, and maybe I'll see you there? Is it a top choice of yours?

Thanks

Wednesday, September 06 2006 at 08:00 PM

Thanks for the comments, it is a bummer being in the same place as last year, but I think my application is stronger and hopefully my loyalty will count for something. I would be all for starting the club, I sure hope we get a chance to do so.

Congrats

Thanks for the congrats. Looks like you are in for a great cycle! Congrats to you on Hamline and Marquette!

UW
Saturday, July 08 2006 at 08:00 PM

No, I never received any emails about 3 people reading my application, or anything similar to that. The last thing I heard from Wiscosin before my acceptance was about filling out the financial aid form... Hope that helps! And good luck on your cycle, I'm sure you have a lot of great acceptances to look forward to!

Wisconsin
Thursday, November 09 2006 at 07:00 PM

I noticed you got that same strange e-mail from Wisconsin saying that it would be 6-8 weeks, and I saw that you asked some other people who are already accepted if they got it too.... I was just wondering what you found out. I applied October 6th, but just got that same e-mail. Think I will hear from them soon? Thanks! and Best of luck

congrats
Monday, October 16 2006 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on your acceptances so far! I'll be keeping up with you through the cycle, and I hope you get many more!

CONGRATS!

Congrats on your acceptance and scholarship to DePaul!!! WOO HOO!!

Thanks/Goodluck
Thursday, September 21 2006 at 08:00 PM

Hey thanks for the kind words. It looks Like your cycle is going well! Question. Would you take Miami w/ no money or Southwestern w / no money? The goal in mind is to eventually end up practicing in Utah. Any input would be appreciated.

Congratulations again!
Friday, November 24 2006 at 07:00 PM

...And another acceptance with a scholarship...CONGRATS!

Deferred definition
Friday, December 30 2005 at 07:00 PM

Hi StG! I miss you, too. Deferred means they have yet to come to a decision on my file. I applied early admission to UMN and that means they're required to give me a decision by the end of December. They didn't accept me, but they didn't want to reject me, so they deferred me to the regular applicant pool and will rereview my file over the coming months. Wish we could talk more. I can't post anymore from my work, so that's a downer. Send me an email sometime, alright? :)

Thanks to everyone
Friday, December 30 2005 at 07:00 PM

Thanks also to everyone's who's been positive and commented on my LSN account. I really appreciate the well wishes. I only hope I have such friendly and caring people as classmates next year in law school.

:)
Monday, September 18 2006 at 08:00 PM

hi new friend! congrats on all your acceptances so far. there is a definitely possibility that we will be classmates next year. neat! i'm crossing my fingers that our umich decisions (whatever they are) come ASAP!

Part Time
Friday, December 01 2006 at 07:00 PM

Are you planning to do law school part time? If so, do you have an opinion as to which of the schools in WI or IL seem most amenable to part-timers? I'd appreciate any insights you can offer. I am thinking about applying to more schools, and could use a fresh perspective on the difficulties particular to part time programs.

emails
Friday, December 01 2006 at 07:00 PM

I just realized I should have given you my email address in case you prefer to discuss part time issues off the board. Feel free to drop me a line if you have the time. Also, ref your previous post about UW emails - the one I got made no mention of the number of reviewers. It did stress the importance of character and fitness info. I can forward you a copy if you like so can see exactly what it says. Good luck with your outstanding apps.

Thanks
Friday, February 10 2006 at 07:00 PM

Thanks for the kind words. Good luck with Minnesota. I would take the request for more info as a good sign (why would they want more from you if they weren't seriously considering you?)

I am almost positive that I will be going to one of the scholars days...so do they actually pay for the plane ticket?

I found you, you cute little kitty avatar-ed Makotah. Good luck on your apps I'll be rootin' for ya! -Data from LSD

Congrats to you too!
Saturday, September 23 2006 at 08:00 PM

Congratulations on all of your acceptances! We both seem to be doing pretty well so far this cycle. I'd love to be your roomy; cats loooooooove me. I just hope that your boyfriend doesn't get jealous ;) I'm going to call pacific on monday to see what the deal is with flying and the dates. I want to go for the first weekend (its like 3.5 weeks away eek) and fly out of san francisco so that I can hang out with my sister. Lets see what they say. Hopefully I'll see you there! --Bouzie1982

Hey!
Wednesday, July 12 2006 at 08:00 PM

Thanks for signin my wall on LSN. Yeah, when I first heard about Notre Dame kinda bummed. Just cuz I thought I had a pretty reasonable chance. Out of the Indiana schools it would be the only possibility I'd be okay with. But we'll see. You got into Depaul you sneaky thing and I didn't even know! Congrats! Maybe by some twist of fate we'll be classmates ;)

Yay, troll!
Friday, December 30 2005 at 07:00 PM

Wow, my very first troll. Not sure I'm deserving, though. I haven't committed any LSN crime like bragging about my accomplishments, etc. The only thing I'm guilty of is applying to a few schools that were out of my reach based on scores. &tier 2 toilet? Maybe, but I'm happy about my choices so far, so that's all that matters. Thanks for the laugh, though. It's awesome to know someone took the time to bash me when my profile's not even all that interesting. ;)

Just Checkin' In
Wednesday, July 12 2006 at 08:00 PM

Hey there looks like you've racked up some acceptances so congrats especially on Depaul :) Where do you think you're headed at this point?

Aw
Wednesday, July 12 2006 at 08:00 PM

Huh, totally forgot about filling out that need access thing for UCLA. I better get crackin' on that. Aww, sorry about the 158 comment..., I'm just feeling sorry for myself. You know, taking the personal inventory... wondering what's wrong with and why the adcomms don't love me. All the while repeating my daily affirmations in front of my mirror, "I'm good enough, smart enough, and goshdarnit people like me." :D Anyway, barring some unforeseen miracle, yup looks like its gonna be UMich. Thanks for your kind words :) And may I say your choice in Cali near the UofP, makes you happy to be alive. You might even forget you're in law school (but you better not). Heh, ok done incoherently babbling on your wall. Take care little Makotah. -Data

oregon
Wednesday, January 24 2007 at 07:00 PM

U of O has to be the most gorgeous campus I've ever seen. Ppl seemed real nice too. Congrats...

UO
Thursday, October 19 2006 at 08:00 PM

I work with a recent UO law school grad. He loved the campus, and his experience as a whole. That said, he was very put off by a tuition hike that resulted in RETROACTIVE tuition increases. Hopefully a problem in the past and nothing more, but it might be something worth asking them about. Congrats on all the acceptances

so many choices
Friday, December 01 2006 at 07:00 PM

Thanks for the good wishes. I am now very glad I only applied to one school. After all the tension of waiting for an acceptance, I wouldn't want to have to cope with the pressure of choosing between schools, too. You have a lot of nice options (kudos), but that make for a difficult decision. If I briefly envied people with multiple opportunities for acceptance, that moment has definitely passed. Good luck!

DePaul
Thursday, October 19 2006 at 08:00 PM

I'm bummed to hear you're having trouble with them, if only because I'd come to expect more from them. It is great to hear when people find a place that really suits them though, like Pacific. Best of luck getting more cash out of them

awsome resume
Wednesday, March 28 2007 at 08:00 PM

I'm still waiting for Minn. I think I'm going to go to UK though since I got full tuition. I'm waiting for the MA program in Diplomacy. Your resume' is awsome though. I'm suprised you were rejected. I always love to remember that the LSAT is good at predicting how good you do in law school but not how good of a lawyer you are.

Pacific - McGeorge
Sunday, February 11 2007 at 07:00 PM

I guess we'll see each other at McGeorge. Thanks for all of your help on LSD, it really went a long way in terms of helping me choose McGeorge. I just wanted to see who else was going and it seems that everyone I've encountered has been a decent person like yourself. See you in August!
