Additional info & updates

I found this website useful throughout the admissions process, so I'll add a few notes to help others facing a similar situation to mine. First of all, no matter how realistic you try to be about your cycle, the wait will be excruciating. As a weak splitter with strong soft factors, I was certain that I would be waitlisted and eventually accepted at my first choice, GULC, but the process still sucked. Looking back, I'd even expected to wait a little longer.

Since I planned to move to DC, where my wife had a job offer, I only applied to GULC, with GW as a safety, and some of the top schools that offered me fee waivers (and were located in places we'd be willing to live - thus Cornell, Duke, Michigan, etc., were out). My wife and I happen to be from Berkeley, so I applied there to satisfy the family, despite the impossible odds.

I didn't write a gpa addendum, which I'm not sure would've made much difference for me anyway. If I were to do things differently, I might've written a LOCI after the initial deferment letter (from GULC). It might have saved myself the tedious wait between the interview in December and the (expected) waitlist letter in March. By then I had already prepared the LOCI and was able to send it off within the week. Otherwise, I'm very satisfied with this cycle and gaining admission to my top choice was, in retrospect, worth the wait.
