Additional info & updates

10-19-09: Took my LSAT and have to say I'm pretty disappointed since I was consistently practice testing between a 170 and 173. I took the test once before and have improved since then. But, at this point, I've come to terms with the fact that my nerves get the best of me. So be it.

I love California and would love to go back there for LS.

Number breakdown:
1: HUGE reach.
2: Reachy target.
3: Targetty safety.

I would love to attend any of these schools. It's a really awesome group.

Some of these are real reaches but I'd rather try instead of always wondering..."what if?"

10-21-09: Added Yale and NYU because one of my best friends urged me to apply there. In fact, he is paying for these 2 applications! I told him there's no way I would ever get in to either school. If I'm wrong, I have to pay him back and take him out for a beer. If I'm right, well... I'm right.

10-23-09: Added Wash U. I've driven through St. Louis a few times on my trips across the country. Nice city. Decent COL.

11-10-09: So, I have 4 more to go and will get those done in the next couple of weeks. Status checkers are a double-edged sword especially the one from Davis that claims it takes 4 weeks(!?) for everything to be processed. That's crazy long.

I'm thinking about applying to Michigan. I need to make that decision ASAP.

11-18-09: Under review at Berkeley! Fingers crossed. I think the best news I'll get is Committee Review but I can be patient? Sure! Obviously...crap.

11-19-09: "Dear sandiecohen47:
Your application for admission to Stanford Law School is now complete and will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee. We will communicate with you again when a decision has been made. Thanks for the $75 and the chuckle we will get after seeing your LSAT score."

11-24-09: And to start my long Turkey Day weekend, I get FABULOUS news from...
Candy Kallen from Phoenix School of Law.

Her e-mails are now coming weekly, apparently. She's holding my scholarship (to a school I have no interest in attending)! And wishing my family a Happy Thanksgiving!
Sigh. Regardless... Happy Thanksgiving, LSN! I hope someone receives happy news from non-stalkers.

11-28-09: Apparently, I went complete at Davis on Wednesday. Sweet! I will turn in my last 4 applications in the next week. I started this process thinking I'd apply to 7 or 8 schools. The final number will end up being 16. Holy schnikes.

12-03-09: I went complete at Wash U...finally. I would love to hear good news from anywhere. That would be nice. Also, a pony.

I received the "Received" and "Complete" notifications from GW within 10 minutes of each other.

12-11-09: I went complete at NYU a few days ago. That's a long shot. Just applied to Mich. UPenn and Yale will be sent in the next few days. I feel like I'm throwing money into a pit of fire with a .01% chance of getting a happy result. Fingers crossed that I'm not a money-burning asshat.

12-14-09: IN AT OSU by e-mail! It's my first acceptance so I am both excited and just generally relieved.

01-11-10: In at Hastings! Reveling in my 2 for 2 batting average which will soon turn to crap as I receive many rejections and waitlists.

01-19-10: In at U of Washington via snail mail! Come on, waitlists and rejections... come to mama.

01-20-10: In at GW via mail with a personalized note from the dean! Holy crap! 4 for 4... who will break my 1.000 batting average? My guess is USC or UVA any day now...

01-27-10: HOLY BANANA, BATMAN! IN AT UCLA!!! This is a top choice because I Love LA a la Randy Newman. OMG. AWESOME. 5 for 5, too.

01-29-10: In at Davis via status checker PDF! Very exciting. Still batting 1.000 and am loving January.

02-01-10: Decision Finalized at USC... meaning the decision's in the mail. Way to keep the suspense, Trojans. I have a feeling it'll be a WL or rejection because they love the high LSATs.

Also, the UC Davis packet came in the mail with a 10K/year Dean's Scholarship! Dean Johnson wrote "Come to California, sandiecohen47!" You don't have to tell me twice. :-)

02-05-10: In at USC! Very exciting. 7 for 7! But some of my purgatory non-UR Berkeley brethren got denied today... which boggles my mind. Dean Tom, what's the deal?

02-08-10: The record is OVER. 7 for 8 with a WL from UVA. I will probably send that LOCI by the end of the week... not that I really have a chance in hell. I'm crossing my fingers for more good news...

02-12-10: Got an e-mail from OSU saying that I will receive a Moritz Leadership Scholarship for $12,000/year. Pretty sweet. I'm about to e-mail them my essay for the full ride. Fingers crossed.

02-13-10: I finally caved and applied to Yale. There is no way in hell I'm getting in but I have my best friend's money to spend. My 250 was OK but not earth shattering. Oh well. At least I'll give Asha something to laugh about...

02-18-10: After seeing so many incredible applicants be rejected by Berkeley today, I am into March Faculty Review. I know the odds are against me, but I really don't mind waiting another month. I love you, Berkeley.

02-23-10: So, I guess those $12 were worth something. In at Wash U! 8 for 9! This one was quite the shock since I hadn't received any status checker updates since...December 16. I think I should probably start withdrawing from a few places but I'm waiting on my SO's plans... so major withdrawing will come in early March.

02-26-10: Eh...8 for 10. WL at Michigan. Was expecting a ding since I applied kind of late, I'm not from Michigan and my LSAT is below their 25th. I have elected to stay on the waitlist even though winter in Ann Arbor might be my own personal hell. I guess I could invest in a pair of cozy longjohns...

03-04-10: So, March is here...with a whole lot of silence. I think this means waitlists or (more likely) dings at UT, Yale, NYU and Stanny. I would probably give Berkeley a kidney if they'd let me in. Is that gross? Probably. I don't care. I love them. I keep looking up at my calendar at work and counting down the days to March 11... the day that I hear back about Faculty Review. What does the future hold for me? I'm going to go blast "Don't Stop Believing" for the third time today.

03-06-10: Found out yesterday that I got a $10,000 scholarship (renewable each year) to Hastings! I'm here in Columbus and was really impressed with the current students and the faculty at the OSU. It's been a really great trip and I have much to think about...

03-10-10: In anticipation of a phone call from 510 (fingers crossed), I received one from 650 and almost had a heart attack. But, it was Stanny's Admissions Office calling me back after I sent an e-mail asking for tour and class info. The woman I spoke to was awesome and super friendly... but still, my chest is recovering.

03-11-10. Cannot believe I'm actually typing these words but...IN AT BERKELEY! I received a missed call last night when I was at a USC reception (awesome time, by the way). Saw the 510 number. Freaked out internally. Called the number back. Heard Dean Tom's name. Left a really dorky message. He called back this morning. Wow. WOW. HOLY CRAP. This means it's seriously time to withdraw from other places. I'll do that tomorrow. Right now I'll just bask in the surrealness that is just getting into my dream school.

03-12-10: Withdrew 5 acceptances and 2 waitlists. Once I visit UCLA, USC and Berkeley next week and hear about the full scholly from OSU, I'll withdraw some more. Still stunned about yesterday's awesome news!

03-16-10: After having a great time at UCLA yesterday, I just withdrew from the OSU. I'm visiting USC tomorrow to compare.

03-22-10: I am in love with Berkeley. I went on a brief visit to both Berkeley and Stanford at the end of last week... and I have to say Berkeley exceeded my already high expectations. I'll likely withdraw from UCLA and USC when I get home this week. My fingers are still crossed for Stanny but Berk seems like the best fit by far.

03-26-10: Apparently, you can be awarded scholarship money after your withdraw. Wash U gave me $36K. Oh, well. I e-mailed them back to remind them of my withdrawn status (that sounds weird). In other news, what's the deal, Texas? Where's your decision? I should probably just withdraw.

03-29-10: I withdrew from UCLA and USC. I'm really excited and ready for Berkeley assuming (correctly) that Stanford and Yale come back with dings.

Also, apparently you can also be denied a full scholarship after you withdraw. Haha. Thanks, the OSU. Nice to know withdrawing prematurely was in my best interest.

04-05-10: I e-mailed Texas asking apologetically for a decision. Let's see how that goes. In the meantime, I think it's time to write a love letter to my secret lover Stanny. He thinks he's hot shit (because he is). Don't tell Berk. These guys are both WAY out of my league.

... And after writing this LOCI, I think I come across less like a secret lover and more like a delusional stalker.

04-06-10: Wow. The e-mail to Texas worked. In via phone message! I honestly thought the silence meant automatic waitlist or ding and I just wanted the news so I could get on with my life. I will withdraw as soon as I get an e-mail/snail mail confirmation.

04-11-10: Back from Berkeley's ASW and now I'm really excited about next year. I really loved the faculty, the current students and the prospective students I met. Unless Stanford gets back to me with a yes before June 1st (which is highly unlikely), I'm a Boaltie!

04-12-10: Rejected from Stanford. Expected. Meh. I loved Berkeley so much that I barely feel disappointed. Rocking my Berkeley Law Class of 2013 shirt in celebration. Also, it's pretty crazy that it took until April 12 to receive my first ding. I expected this months ago. I'm a lucky lady.

04-15-10: Rejected from Yale. In other words, Hell did not freeze over.

04-16-10: Still nothing from NYU. I'm totally sold on Berkeley and want to make my final/binding commitment soon. But I promised my best friend I'd wait it out for the sake of our beer bet. C'mon, NYU!

04-23-10: Waitlisted at NYU. I was expecting a ding so I'm pleasantly surprised. However, I want to practice in CA and love Boalt. So, I'm withdrawing.

Regardless, CYCLE OVER! BERKELEY BOALT HALL CLASS OF 2013!

P.S. Final batting average: .667 with 3 waitlists and 2 dings (from Y and S). I couldn't have asked for a better "season" considering the number of applications this cycle.

Oh, also: go to 2:57 to see why I'm extra excited to be at Boalt (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JvcoA3yDHo&feature=related)

In spirit of the Cohen family, you must apply to Berkeley, regardless of your LSAT score! I've been obsessed with The O.C. lately too. It might be my inspiration for wanting to switch coasts. Maybe only a true fan can understand.

Thanks!
Wednesday, December 27 2006 at 07:00 PM

Thank you! Best of luck to you, too! As the above poster said, I hope you're applying to Berkeley. They have their own Cohen club! :)

Saturday, December 30 2006 at 07:00 PM

Dig the O.C. reference. You probably already know this, but Peter Gallagher visits UC Berkeley every year and a scholarship is awarded to one public interest student in honor of his character. ...But maybe that's just your name and you can ignore everything I just said. Either way, we have similar numbers, WE (I think), and schools, so I thought I'd say hi. Good luck to you.

Saturday, December 30 2006 at 07:00 PM

I lol'ed at today's update. I tweaked my PS for Stanford but have yet to send out the application because it seems so frivolous.

Marmalade!

Umm... You're not supposed to identify posters haha. And, Stanny is a def option for you! Talk to your mutual friend who is a 1L there now - he got in with similar #s (your gpa is fabu!). Looks like we sent our apps around the same time - cheers to a fun cycle. =)

Thanks!

You were quick with that comment on the ND admit. Thank you, thank you. Congrats on Ohio State. It's nice to get that first one under your belt, I know. It's been a good day for me, so here's to hoping you get some more good news of your own before Christmas!

we're basically #'s twins...I saw you posting in the Berk threat...I too am waiting to hear back after going UR 10/22 and not a peep since. No word=bad? HOpe you are staying more sane than I am! Good luck!

thanks!
Friday, February 06 2009 at 07:00 PM

I couldn't be happier to have you creep on my LSN...that just makes me feel more justified in creeping on everyone else's profile. I'm addicted to these sites...so not OK. Anyways- feel free to email me to keep me posted on your cycle and/or for temporary solace during this very trying time. ps its 1 AM I NEED TO GET OFF LSN.

Saturday, December 30 2006 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on Hastings! You've got to be tweaking out over there with so much silence. Don't get down on your cycle yet though. The good news is going to start rolling in. I'm sending those good vibes back your way.

See, I told you...
Saturday, December 30 2006 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on yew dub!

Congrats on UW and GW!
Friday, August 14 2009 at 08:00 PM

Your mock Stanford e-mail made me laugh. Good luck with Berkeley, Yale, NYU, and the rest of your cycle. I hope you end up having to buy your friend a beer.

I hope wherever you go for LS gives you the career versatility that Sandy Cohen got out of his Berkeley degree. He had at least three jobs over like a two-year span.

No idea...
Thursday, August 06 2009 at 08:00 PM

I'll let the $$ and ASWs sway me. Good luck to you tho.. I want to be classmates again!

Tis true. Well, good luck with the rest of your cycle, # twin.

Saturday, December 30 2006 at 07:00 PM

The Georges! Haha. I like that. Thank you though. I like DC, but would never pay sticker + COL to be there. So no harm, no foul. IUB is looking good all of a sudden. How's the Moritz coming?

Sunday, August 16 2009 at 08:00 PM

congrats on your winning streak so far!!

What can I say...
Saturday, December 30 2006 at 07:00 PM

When I'm right, I'm right. Congratulations on UCLA! Davis too!

Great options
Monday, July 13 2009 at 08:00 PM

You have a difficult choice ahead. Not to tempt fate, but if you are accepted to SLS will you definitely attend?

Thanks you!
Friday, October 24 2008 at 08:00 PM

Sandie, thanks for your message :D. I still have money on you grabbing one of those spots! Even though I would love to meet you at UCLA, haha.

Saturday, December 30 2006 at 07:00 PM

You made faculty review at Berkeley!! You rock! I will write them a LOR on your behalf if you need one. I'm nobody, but it will be glowing.

Berkeley
Wednesday, October 28 2009 at 08:00 PM

Yay for getting FR!! I'm rooting for you - thanks for the moral support during the silence. I'm glad at least one of us got some good news :)

Thursday, February 18 2010 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on getting into UCLA and USC! I`m still waiting to hear from USC - seems like they are taking forever! What is your first choice?

Thursday, February 18 2010 at 07:00 PM

I do like LA, but staying here is more for personal/family reasons than undying love (I reserve that for NYC, where I used to live). Anyway, good luck with Berkeley! UCLA is my first choice, unless USC comes back with an offer I can`t refuse, but I don`t actually see that happening. So UCLA, here I come! Are you going to the admitted students reception in March, since you will be doing your school rounds?

Saturday, December 30 2006 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on WUSTL. And as for the Berkeley LOR, I can write around our lack of familiarity IRL by primarily focusing on your awesomeness.

UCLA reception
Thursday, February 18 2010 at 07:00 PM

Hi, yes, I am going to the Admitted Students reception on March 15, as well. Maybe I will see you there!

I did just get into UVA!!!
Saturday, December 30 2006 at 07:00 PM

In my excitement I forgot to change my status to "Accepted". I went back and forth on the decision whether to ED or not. The debt is so scary and I had so many other great offers. But, I said at the beginning of all this that it was T14 or bust, and when push came to shove I did what I thought I had to to see that through. So it looks like my cycle is over! Still scary, but thrilled.

Wednesday, October 28 2009 at 08:00 PM

I dare you to pull the ED trigger at UVA to join me & badwithpseudonyms! Although I still have my fingers crossed for you at Berkeley & Stanford... I've got a good feeling! :)

Wednesday, October 28 2009 at 08:00 PM

Haha alright, can't say I blame you. Cali holds a special place in my heart too. Oh well, I'm aiming there for life after law school so there's still hope!! I'm definitely rooting for you though & I'll be checking often for good news! :)

Sunday, February 08 2009 at 07:00 PM

hey. i just saw somewhere that you're seriously considering hastings. i don't think it would be a good decision to go there when you have an acceptance from ucla. hasting is super cut throat and not that many people enjoy their experience there. and the school is in the heart of the tenderloin district, perhaps the shadiest neighborhood of any law school (at least USC is in isolated from its surroundings). let's just say my friend at ucla is having a much better experience than my friend at hastings. just thought i'd share.

Let me be the first to say...
Saturday, December 30 2006 at 07:00 PM

HOLY CRAP! CONGRATULATIONS!

Saturday, December 30 2006 at 07:00 PM

Yes. We certainly did well for ourselves, and probably exceeded most people's expectations given the increase in apps this cycle. I'm going to Charlottesville for the ASW the weekend after Easter. I think I've found my place already. michstudent and I have talked a bunch already, and I really don't think I could be happier with how things played out. I feel safe in assuming you feel the same way in regards to your cycle. Congratulations again!

OMG!!!!
Wednesday, October 28 2009 at 08:00 PM

AHHHH!!!!!! YOU DID IT!!!!!!!! I could not be more happy for you. Congrats, you deserve it and you are going to have an incredible time. CONGRATS!!!!!! :) :)

Sunday, August 16 2009 at 08:00 PM

the above is me not being logged in :( yayyyy!! hope you're celebrating!

OMG!!
Friday, October 24 2008 at 08:00 PM

BERK!! I TOTALLY CALLED IT! Congrat!!!:D

Sunday, August 16 2009 at 08:00 PM

aw, thanks. yeah, i'd love love love to be at stanford, but i have to wait to see what happens with this NYU scholarship. as happy as i would be to get the scholarship, it would make for an extremely tough decision. we'll see!

whoa
Thursday, August 06 2009 at 08:00 PM

Haven't been here in a minute so sorry for the late congrats!!!! Are you going to Boalt's asw? I'll be there.

Thursday, February 18 2010 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on Berkeley!! I was UCLA yesterday too - I thought it was great. Any idea of your first choice at this point or still weighing your options?

Hi!
Thursday, February 18 2010 at 07:00 PM

If your name is actually Sandie Cohen, then no, that wasn`t me you sat next to :) I checked out some nametags, but didn`t see any names that looked familiar. Yeah, UCLA was great (though I am already sold on it.) I talked to some profs in my area of interest and I found everyone to be really accessible and friendly. Living in LA, I run into a lot of current UCLA Law students and alum, and they all have such good things to say. Let me know what you think of USC - I actually haven`t met too many alum from there and I haven`t even heard from them yet, but I am interested to know. I totally understand that Berkeley is at the top of your list (though hopefully UCLA is a close second!) - I assume you are going to visit?

P.S.
Thursday, February 18 2010 at 07:00 PM

Hope you are having a great time in LA! You came in for some perfect weather... are you hitting up the beach?

Thursday, February 18 2010 at 07:00 PM

Yeah, Northern Cal is really pretty. How did you think USC compared to UCLA? I will be very interested to see where you decide to go!!

Hey!
Thursday, February 18 2010 at 07:00 PM

Nice to hear your thoughts on the SoCal schools. I will visit USC when they send me an acceptance letter :) In the meantime, I am pretty set on UCLA. So it sounds like you are probably Berkeley-bound? That is such a great school and amazing opportunity... though it would be fun if you came to UCLA too, of course :) Are you waiting to hear from Stanford before you make a final decision?

Thursday, February 18 2010 at 07:00 PM

Guess i won`t be seeing you at UCLA, but lots of luck!! Berkeley is a great choice (assuming you don`t still get a better offer elsewhere!)

Hey!
Thursday, February 18 2010 at 07:00 PM

Thanks for your vote of confidence :) I still think I have a reasonable chance of getting in to USC, once they realize they still have my application (possibly stuck in a corner somewhere). I just sent in my seat deposit for UCLA though, so unless USC really surprises me, I think I have got it pretty much tied up. (Easy to do when you only apply to four schools, of course!) Lots of luck and keep in touch with your final decision!!

Hi!
Thursday, February 18 2010 at 07:00 PM

Hey there, thanks for the moral support :) Yeah, USC is totally lame - I had put down my UCLA deposit in March anyway, but they could have let me know they were going to reject me before the absolute last minute possible (in the event I hadn`t already put down a deposit, of course.) Anyway... very happy about UCLA! And awesome that you are going to Berkeley! That is really exciting - I am sure it will be amazing. Definitely send me an email if you head down for some SoCal sunshine!
