I'm not sure one is better than the other. I could still end up rejected, where you've already been "accepted pending available room". At any rate, it's interesting to note the apparent difference between Penn's waitlist and deferment.
those WLs should be easy Accepts for you. Do you have a felony conviction or something?
. . . or anything funny like that, but I am beginning to suspect that there is something seriously wrong with my application. It's either that or yield protection (or perhaps I applied too late, though I really don't think it's that).
that's fucked up. how the hell does GW and ND waitlist u with those kind of numbers???! it's gotta be some kind of yeild protection unless u did something horrible. gluck
Am I a dummy? What's yield protection?
Yield protection is when a school waitlists or rejects a qualified applicant because the student is unlikely to matriculate (i.e. his cores are too good). This is done to protect or improve rankings by being more "selective" in USN&WR.

Hey man, I just saw you got a Penn decision today. I wonder if we received the same e-mail? Mine said my app was "on hold" and invited me to send further documentation. They said I should received a decision by the end of March. I really considered it more of a deferment than waitlist, but I'm not sure. Is this the same e-mail you got?
