I'm absolutely flabbergasted by your cycle. 180K at NYU and waitlisted at GULC? do you have any thoughts?

I have lots of thoughts! Hopefully some of them get accepted to places! Honestly, though, a background in math/CS isn't the most traditional path to public interest law. I feel like that might be a reason why schools are hesitant about me. (Also, I applied pretty late in the cycle. Curious if my results would have been any different with October apps.)

I see what you did there ;) That's fair. Perhaps they worry you're just a brilliant person who thought "eh, why not law?" I'm sorry, though. Hopefully those reamining pendings turn for the better.

I sincerely hope you re-apply as soon as apps open next year. Law school's (as I have been taught to understand it...) don't really care that much about what you want to do with your JD; they only care about whether you are going to hurt any of their metrics (matriculation, retention, bar passage, JD-required employment, etc...). I don't know why you applied so late, but if you didn't supply some kind of explanation about it in your apps - I think that if I were an admissions officer, i'd take one look at your app and assume that you don't REALLY want to go to law school; this was just some big spur of the moment decision you made one day that 3-months into law school, you're going to be questioning REALLY hard - likely to the point that you drop out and start an LSAT tutoring company or something... TLDR; if I were an admissions officer reading your app w/o an explanation of why someone with near perfect numbers/cv is submitting this late, I'd immediately assume they don't really want to be there, and WL you. BUT, that being said, if you REALLY do want to be a lawyer - I'd just reapply EARLY next year - and I can't imagine how this board would not reverse itself entirely...

If I really want to be a lawyer, why I would wait another year to reapply and (potentially) get accepted to more schools instead of just going to NYU this year with a Vandy?

Hey, if you're digging NYU - by all means... Fabulous school - fabulous offer. Did you not like Columbia, or were they just not willing to match NYU's offer? I will admit that I've implicitly assumed that someone who "really wants to be a lawyer" is going to aim to go to the highest ranked school that meets their budgetary needs. If going to a YHS doesn't appeal to you - then sure, by all means, take the money and run.
