Extra Curricular Information

I've put the resume that I sent with my law school application up on my website, so I've deleted the summary here. If you'd like to read it, just click on the link to the right, and find my post on "The Law School Application: The Resume."

Additional info & updates

****NOTE****
I will slowly be offloading this information onto my blog. As I put stuff up there, I will remove it here. The goal is to have a complete guide to the law school application process eventually. It is nowhere near done yet, but feel free to check it out at:

**************

Columbia originally offered no money. I asked them to consider my $46k Chicago scholarship, and they countered with the $25k from above.

Letter of Rec Strategy:

After discussing my major with law school admissions reps, it became clear that they liked engineers for their ability to think analytically and handle difficult course loads. However, they worried about their communication skills (both written and verbal) and their ability to succeed in a non-scientific discipline. To help combat this perception, I have requested the following recommendation letters:

1. A letter from my Engineering Communication professor (a former English teacher) attesting to my ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both my writing and public speaking.

2. A letter from my Philosophy of Law professor regarding my performance in his course. Outside of normal class participation, I wrote an extra-credit paper on the development of the insanity defense in relation to drug addiction (primarily based on reading appellate court decisions in the law library). Hopefully, this will demonstrate some level of aptitude for, and interest in, the study of law.

Much better to hold hands than hold our breaths. Also, congrats on your acceptances as well. It looks like you're set for next fall.

Chicago

Was wondering if the Chicago decision date was 2/11? The format looks to have somehow gotten messed up. In any event, CONGRATS!

Yes, it was 2/11. I'm not sure what happened there, but I think I fixed it.

GWU / UT
Sunday, July 10 2005 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on the GWU PMS; think you'll take it? They seem to really tbe taking an interest in the applicants (even though 25K doesn't go as far as it used to: tuition is 34K next year!). I'd love to take your place in TX, though. I'm visiting Austin next week and I think I'll love it. Even if I get in, the new an d increased non-res tuition is tough.

Interview for UC?

Did you have to interview for UChicago?

I appreciate the congratulations Brad, best of luck on your pending apps and congrats on the places you've been accepted!

Right now I'm leaning towards Columbia and Harvard (unsurprisingly, the two schools I haven't heard from yet). However, of the schools I have heard from, my top choices are NYU, Penn, and Chicago. It is a very tough choice, but I'm hoping to have a clearer picture after visiting the admitted student days. What I'd really like is for someone to throw some big merit scholarships my way and make my choice easy. While I am definitely very impressed by GW's offer (and was impressed by the school when I visited last Christmas), I'm really looking for a school with more national prestige. I'm not sure where I want to end up practicing, so I'd like to keep as many options open as possible, and I just think I'd have a better chance of that happening at a top 15 school. Good luck on your visit to Texas. If you have the time, I would definitely recommend meeting with some of the people on the admissions committee. They are a very friendly and helpful group. Also, leave room on your schedule for a trip down to 6th street!

No, I did not have to interview. From what I've read, the interview is often used as a method for yield protection to make sure you are really interested in Chicago. I don't have any idea if the admissions committee knows this, but I visited Chicago over Christmas and self-toured the law facilities. I never formally reported to anyone, but I did write my name down on a sign-in sheet, so if the adcoms had access to that they might have interpreted it as interest in the school. Not really sure though, just a thought. Also, congrats on your acceptances; nice to see a fellow engineer faring so well. I certainly wish you good luck on HYS, but if all else fails maybe I'll see you at NYU next year.

Deferred from Yale?
Wednesday, July 13 2005 at 08:00 PM

You completely deserve to get into Yale, if, for nothing else, putting up with what must have been constant and unrelenting taunting at your playing of the trombone. :) You're in, trust me. Oh, and fuckin awesome at Chicago! /Yale Sux.

Re: Deferred from Yale?

I didn't even apply to YaleI figured I didn't have a shot. But yeah, I'm very happy about Chicago. The only time I got made fun of for the trombone was when I had to bring it on the bus in Junior High. Man that sucked.

Boalt

How come u didn't apply to Boalt? Of course, I'm assuming you are interested in IP.

Def at H 2!
Friday, May 06 2005 at 08:00 PM

I got deferred at H too...I hear the school does not like science/eng majors. Too bad for them! BTW...were you able to visit Columbia along with NYU? I'm still undecided on whether to visit Chicago.

Re: Boalt
Friday, August 12 2005 at 08:00 PM

I didn't apply to Boalt for two reasons: 1) I didn't think my GPA would be good enough to get me in. 2) I am very conservative. I don't mind being around liberal opinions, but Berkeley is pretty famous for taking it to extremes. I didn't think I would fit in with the culture there.

I have heard the same thing about Harvard, but I don't understand why they would have such a policy. I think it's probably just internet speculation. Re: NYU/CLS, I visited both about a year ago around Christmas. I spent more time at CLS and did not get a good feel for NYU. I have plane tickets reserved for the end of March CLS/NYU admitted days, but I'm waiting to hear back from CLS before confirming them. I sent an e-mail explaining the situation, but thus far no response. I would definitely recommend checking out Chicago if you have the time. When I visited over my winter break, I was really impressed. I already have plane tickets booked for their admitted student day.

Re: Glad we aren't applying...
Friday, August 12 2005 at 08:00 PM

I appreciate the compliments Iffy, best of luck to you as well. I try to keep my profile as complete as possible. Law schools are very big on saying they look at the "whole applicant," so I don't see what good it is having a profile with only numbers. My hope is that this profile will be useful for a) letting people applying this cycle know more beyond my numbers and b) helping people in future cycles see how I approached the application process.

good to meet you

Great to meet you at the Penn weekend! I finally decided on Penn (got some decent $). That's a sweet offer you've got at Chicago! It would probably fit with your political leanings, from what I understand. Keep in touch, and good luck!
