Extra Curricular Information

I've decided to start a blog about this journey. The information is below.

blog: http://misslawlady.blogspot.com/

C&F disclosure; however, NO CONVICTIONS. I will fully disclose at the conclusion of my cycle.

Excellent Recommendations. (Even got a hand-written comment on my acceptance letter from TTU emphasizing how stellar they were) FTW!

Average Softs.

Above Average Personal Statement, although I might be totally biased.

I was a transfer student for undergrad hence the GPA discrepancy.

Additional info & updates

Decided to retake the LSAT in December 2011 due to test day jitters that SEVERLY impacted my performance.

Retook the December 2011 LSAT. Felt confident going in and leaving. Received score on January 4, 2012. Score increase of 7 points. Wish I would have just taken it once, but can't change the past.

1/6 Got an email from Texas Tech that my file is in review. Kinda excited and nervous at the same time. I'd love to be at TTU.

1/9 Now that my second LSAT score came in (YAY!!!) I'm getting tons of unsolicited fee waivers.

I definitely recommend asking for fee waivers; the worse they could say is "no." This is especially true if you didn't get the LSAC fee waiver (like me). I only asked 2 schools for fee waivers and got one in an email, the other school asked me to fill out some fee waiver app. Needless to say, I exed that school off my list.

1/11 I got an email from STCL about the status of my application. Kinda freaked me out because that was the title of the email and I knew before opening it that it could go either way. Luckily, it was just an email telling me that my status has changed from "application received" to "application complete." They also told me that they will not be making decisions on regular deadline applications until after 2/15 (the deadline) and that applications are chosen at random.

1/11 Submitted my application to SMU days ago and they have received my CAS report according to LSAC but I still havent gotten status checker information. Is this usual?!? Definitely wasn't the case with the other schools. I hope that doesn't set the tone for getting a response.

1/12 Spoke too soon I suppose. I just got an email from SMU and now I can log into the status checker. Application complete.

1/12 Same situation as SMU with Carey (UMD). No choice but to wait it out. I suppose this is what happens when tons of application materials roll in at once.

1/14 In review at TexWes. Status Checker says that a decision generally takes about 4-6 weeks. This could be my first decision.

1/16 Just checked my status @ St. Mary's and it reads "A decision has been made by the Admissions Committee and notification has been sent by surface mail. Decision status cannot be provided over the phone by fax or email," although the "status" never changed from complete to decision rendered or whatever. Guess I'll be stalking the mailbox/mail carrier (I'm only kidding).

1/19 Was really surprised today when I got an unsolicited fee waiver from UChicago. Perhaps they sent it on accident because my numbers are below their medians. P.S. Still stalking the mailbox.

1/20 Got my first acceptance letter!!! In @ St. Mary's.

Also just checked the status checker at TexWes and although the actual status hasn't changed the notes section above says "Our records indicate that your application is now undergoing a comprehensive review so that we can reach a final decision on your application." Not sure what to take from this; was it not undergoing an initial comprehensive review?!? Perhaps I'm thinking too much into this.

1/23 I was so worried about UMD especially since I didn't get any status checker information. The acceptance came in a regular sized envelope with "Congratulations!" on the outside!

Received some "why Houston" information after I submitted my application; hopefully this is a sign of good things to come.

1/30 Got another package from Maryland regarding financial aid and housing information. These numbers scare me!

2/1 Got an email from TTU notifying me of my acceptance. I am beyond blown away. TTU and SMU are my top choices! Awaiting additional info to be sent VIA snail mail.

2/1 File is "In Review" at Houston. Kinda feeling nervous about this one, as UH, SMU & TTU are vying for the top spot on my list. Wonder how long this will take.

2/6 Been complete a BU for quite awhile, considering sending a LOCI. I applied for both Summer Entry and Fall Entry. This was a top contender until I realized that it requires 126 credits to graduate, granted they are quarter hours and not semester hours. It's still more than what my BA program required.

2/8 Got an email from St. Mary's emphasizing when my seat deposit is due and not to delay sending it in. Sounds like a cash cow to me. It's still wayyy early in the process and I haven't even visited.

STCL starts reviewing apps on 2/15 according to an email I recieved.

2/14 Decision rendered at Baylor; letter sent via snail mail.

2/23 Got into Baylor today!!! I'm so excited about this one because it's in my hometown :) The acceptance letter had a handwritten message on the bottom left corner; what a sweet touch.

2/28 Checked U of H status checker and the weirdest thing happened. The actual "decision" status didn't change but the date did. It originally said it was in review since January 31st now it has the in review date as today...weird.

3/21 Still haven't received packet from TxWes. UHLC keeps pushing my "In review" date back which has me concerned although my numbers are spot on. Hopefully a decision is right around the corner...
Patience is a virtue.
more updates to come...

3/23 Waitlisted at Houston, I was actually sort of stunned by this decision. I'm pretty sure I will not be attending. Not a fan of waitlists because it puts me in a poor position for scholarship money and I refuse to pay full price for law school.

4/5 GOT INTO SMU!!! This is one of my top contenders as I have loads of family in the Metroplex! (in via status checker). My status on the status checker never changed from "application complete" to "in review (or something to that effect)" but instead to "admitted."

4/9 SMU called to congratulate me on being accepted, had to turn on the acting skills and pretend like I had no clue...was told scholly info will be included in the snail mail package.

Cycle over!

advisors

I think advisors believe they are being honest with people when they say those things. After all, that's what I'd like to hear is a little honesty. But there seems to be no truth to that honesty; the truth is that I was told to stay away from accredited or non-provisionally accredited schools, but I've got acceptance letters from two schools not in those categories. I can't be the first person with my numbers to have this kind of cycle. It seems that advisors should, instead of saying you have no chance, say, you have a little chance - what other parts of your application package would help the adcoms see why you should be admitted. I say that to say that my experience has been that it's not about hard numbers. I wonder how many people advisors like that have pushed away from law school...

You have an amazing g.p.a. I'm sure you be more than happy with your cycle. what's your top choice?

Thursday, January 05 2012 at 07:00 PM

My to choice is at my Alma mater, U of Houston. Slim chance though.

Thanks!

Congrats to you too! GL on the rest of your cycle!

I sent out the Baylor app. around Sept. It wasn't complete until they released the Dec. Lsat scores. As for UH, I applied for the FT program. PT just isn't worth it to me since you'll be losing out in the networking department. Even if you transferred into the FT program, you'll be using the summer to take courses instead of gaining valuable experience at internships.

Looks like your cycle is off to a pretty good start. Good luck with the remainder of your decisions! In response to your question, I am a Texan.

Saturday, January 07 2012 at 07:00 PM

Did Texas Tech inform you of your scholarship via the initial email?

Good luck!

Thank you for your comment! Good luck with your cycle. I wish I had your GPA! Full ride at TTU and I'd be torn between them and UH at sticker.

I have a top 6 or so. I don't have a true #1. I'm just buying my time before I have to make a real decision about it. Just seeing what sticks and what doesn't

Wednesday, November 09 2011 at 07:00 PM

Thanks a lot! Best of luck to you as well. Looks like we'll both have some tough choices to make!

My status checker did the same thing. I'm not sure what that means.

My status checker date updated again today. Maybe it means a different person is reviewing it?

Great to see you're doing well

It helped with making a decision for or against attending Tech? I'm attending for sure.
