Extra Curricular Information

3.1 GPA at halfway point of undergrad. Worked fewer hours(~30 to ~15) and switched from Pre-Med to English + PoliSci minor to raise GPA to 3.5

Leadership Roles (President of Latinx Pre-Law Group, Safety Officer for Club Sports team, Advisory Board for set of courses for Freshman, and Mentored other middle school and high school Latinx students)

Worked 13-30 hours/wk nearly every week; grades suffered (was working almost 40hrs/wk when I went on Academic Probation Sophomore year)

Summers I worked for in Real Estate Equity, at Big 5, for a local Youth Baseball Program, and in a tiny Law Office.

For my gap year, I am working in the legal department of a large, international tech company as a legal intern (typically 3Ls). Also volunteering as a mentor for local underserved students which I did my Freshman year of college. I won the Mentorship award with them (volunteered from high school junior to freshman in college).

I was homeless for a very brief part of my life, and home insecure for a larger part of it.

First-Generation College Student, First-Generation American, Low-Income, one of the first in my family to graduate from high school (certainly among the first on my father's side)

My girlfriend is applying to Med Schools this cycle as well, therefore a lot of my decisions are affected by her applications.

Cornell?

Hi, Would you be willing to share why you got rejected from Cornell? You seem to have really good stats - LSAT, URM, first-gen college student. I'd really appreciate it , I look forward to hearing from you. Best, Kelly

Hey Kelly, I went through many iterations of personal statements, diversity statements and the like. Cornell received the first versions of these without information specific to Cornell (i.e. no Why Cornell; at that stage of the cycle, I didn't know you were supposed to write those). It could also have some degree of yield protecting, but I think I fueled that fire by not submitting my best application possible (my best applications, IMO, were sent to Yale, Stanford and Berkeley). Overall, I couldn't tell you why I was rejected at Cornell, but I think it had to do with being overeager to get applications out before researching the process and refining my materials. Thanks for your question! :)
