2/9/2011 - Well, this has been pretty rough. UC Davis and Hastings told me they would not review my application because of my academic dismissal. I was able to convince Hastings to review my application, but they rejected my application in the end. I was pleasantly surprised to get waitlisted at BU and U of Illinois, though I would have felt a lot better about it if I had gotten an acceptance from at least one school. I thought I would be accepted at USF, but I guess they must have viewed my academic dismissal very negatively. If anyone has any advice about getting into schools off the waitlist, I would be very eager to hear it!

Accepted at SCU with a scholarship! What a relief! So glad I don't have to hide from the shame of not getting in ANYWHERE haha. I am out of town visiting the schools that waitlisted me, so I have only gotten news over the phone, and my mother couldn't figure out if the scholarship is per year or one time, but who cares! I'm in!

Scholarship is renewable each year for the full amount if I finish in the top 25% of the class, and in some lesser amount if in the top 50%

Today I don't mind because I finally got into a law school! I did not apply to the same school because I want a fresh start. Feel free to message me if you are going through a similar situation and want to talk it out, I've been pretty obsessed about this stuff for months.

Can you email me directly to discuss? Thanks

I feel bad that I wasn't able to answer some people's questions! To update, I graduated from SCU in May, somewhere around the middle of the class. I never heard from anyone at SCU why they decided to admit me despite the AD, however, right after the AD, the admissions people told me they thought I should go to another ABA school, do well there, and apply to transfer to SCU because I probably wouldn't get in. Paul Pless, the (now ousted) Admissions Director at University of Illinois, told me that every other AD'd applicant hed seen was outright rejected. He said I was WLd because I took ownership of my failures and demonstrated that I had conquered these issues. In my disclosure essay, I basically said that I never really had to work that hard before, and that as an undergrad, I had a habit of coasting through courses that were interesting for me in college, and doing the minimum to get by in courses that I wasn't interested in. I went to law school with the mistaken belief that all the classes would be interesting and easy for me because I was so into the law (ha!). I was also afraid of asking for help during my first attempt at law school. I found my professors intimidating and was afraid of letting my classmates know what I didn't know. I explained that in my job (litigation paralegal), I made sure to ask for help and clarification when I needed it, and that in studying for the LSAT, I practiced my weak areas rather than my strong areas. If you are reapplying after an AD, I recommend you emphasize how you have changed, and to the extent possible, avoid blaming external factors for why you didn't do well. For example, some people might cite family drama, illness, or depression/anxiety as reasons - which may very well be legitimate! - but these issues can be recurring (and unfortunately, almost every law student experiences these issues), and schools probably want to know that you can handle the pressure without cracking. Demonstrate why things are different for you now, and why you would be able to handle it now. Anyway, that's what I got from the experience, and I hope this helps anyone who found themselves in the position I was.
