Extra Curricular Information

Nothing too spectacular

So thought I'd share a little info on my app process that mite be of use for any of those thinking of applying next year:

*Went to graduate school (Masters) for International Studies and did much better academically (3.84)

*For the oh-so-FUN LSAT...I really found Powerscore books helpful above any of the other LSAT classes/course material I looked at. Prepare ahead of time...getting a good LSAT score can help you get $$$ to help pay off loans post-law school.

*For personal statements, I really liked the book "Harvard Law School Application Essays." It gives you essays that Harvard-admitted students wrote and an analysis after each essay by the staff of the Harvard Crimson. In general, I felt the essays the staff found to be successful were ones that showed:
1. the person's growth/strengths that could be applied as a lawyer
2. making it PERSONAL to each school (obviously admissions people want to see why their school matters so much to you)
3. incorporation of past experiences that helped you grow (but don't go into narration-mode where it sounds like you're just reading off your resume)

*For rec letters, the book "How to Get Into the Top Law Schools" by Richard Montauk, really helped A LOT. The guy gives a lot of very detailed info on preparing your application material. For those who are just starting the app process, HIGHLY recommend that you at least skim through his book before you start applying

Additional info & updates

Here's to splitters!

*All scholarships are per year

1/18 Received acceptance letter via snail mail from St Johns - full ride scholarship

1/19 Rutgers-Camden Acceptance Letter via Email - w/ partial scholarship (39k)

2/1 Rutgers-Newark Acceptance Letter via Email - partial scholarship (22k)

2/7 Brooklyn Acceptance via Email

2/13 UMD Acceptance via Snail Mail

2/14 UMD, thru snail mail, notifies I am a candidate for Leadership Scholarship - will fly me out for the interview on April 1...hmmm choices....St. John's (=full ride) wants a nonrefundable deposit by April 1...

2/17 Went to Georgetown group interview.
For any people who are offered interviews, GO to the interview...the dean was telling us how he changed his mind and admitted a girl who was initially on the priority waitlist after remembering his interview with her and how great their one-on-one interview went.
The group interview is more of a 'how do you interact with other people in the group'. He gave us an impromptu question and had two people monitor the discussion (our question: how the group should go about in helping a new dean of admissions with the applicant selection process). Also, he gave us two potential applicants and had us discuss who would be more qualified to get admissions to Georgetown.

2/21 Bah- put on hold for what they're gonna do with my application at Cardozo till end of April

2/22 Waitlisted at GW

2/28 Admitted at CUNY via snail mail

3/5 Admitted at Georgetown via snail mail. Wow - I guess the group interview helped. Dean of Admissions wrote a personal note on the acceptance letter regarding my performance and how it made a difference with regards to his decision.

3/14 American U - Waitlisted via email -> They needed a decision in two weeks concerning my accepting their waitlist so I just withdrew my application 3/17

3/17 Fordham - Waitlisted via online status checker

3/18 U Michigan - Waitlisted via email

3/22 Brooklyn Scholarship offer - $37,100 per year

3/23 BU - received waitlist notice via email

Tailend of March - Requested a delay in sending deposit to St. Johns, which they generously granted till April 15th

4/2 BC - received waitlist notice via snail mail

4/5 Got a call regarding amount for UMD Scholarship

4/7 Rejection email from NYU

4/12ish Requested more $$$ from Brooklyn and they granted me $10,000 based on need grants yay

5/2 Made the difficult decision of withdrawing from Georgetown

5/6 Got accepted from Fordham's waitlist...decisions decisions

5/31 Decided not to pay 1st deposit for Fordham. It's a GREAT school...but having no loans after graduation was more tempting at this point. And yeah, yeah, yeah, you prob have better chances getting corp jobs with higher ranked schools but life ain't all about flashy jobs

I am assuming based on your notes that ultimately you really prioritized grants over rank. Was that how you decided to withdraw from Georgetown? But really thanks for so much detail. I love it.

I see you were offered $19,000 off Fordham's waitlist - how did that work? Did it come with the initial acceptance or did you have to approach? Fordham's my target right now, applying with similar numbers (173/3.0), and I am really hoping to mitigate my student loan debt.
