Extra Curricular Information

-Okay soft factors: two summers in the state AG's office, political research assistant, editor of the university paper's opinion section, president of several campus clubs, resident assistant

-Very strong recs from two tenured professors (one history, one political science)

-Wrote a two-page diversity statement on military upbringing, but didn't do any other optional essays

THOUGHTS AT THE END OF 1L:

-Showing interest in the particular school is important, even if your stats are high. I used a standard PS and filled in the name of each school at the end of the statement. That probably hurt me with Berkeley, where they give you the option of writing a "Why Berkeley" statement and they allow you to write a 4-page PS. All of these are signals for how interested you are. Seeing as how California schools were my weak spot, it probably would have helped if I had stated some sort of reason to be in CA that made sense with my narrative.

-Applying fairly early (mid-Nov) probably helped me, especially at H, where I was more of a borderline applicant.

-I did well my first year, but I see why so many people at top places take time in between undergrad and law school. Prior "real" jobs help get a good job after law school, and they give you a chance to think more about what you'd like to do with your life after law school. If you get into a good place straight-through, I'd encourage you to think about deferring for a year or two and doing something that interests you.

-Finally, if weather really affects you, consider that when picking a law school. I like H, but the forever-grey skies late fall semester and pretty much all of spring semester do get to me sometimes.

Congrats on such an awesome cycle! I am looking to take the LSAT this coming June and was wondering if you had any tips? A 170 is my goal! Congrats again!

Thank you! I did some research and first focused on untimed accuracy, then doing individual sections in 35 minutes, and finally simulating the full five sections under time constraints. I used Powerscore books for LR and LG, and studied with a partner on a set schedule to keep myself accountable. Good luck!
