Extra Curricular Information

Personal statement is about overcoming extreme hardship. I was a professional writer and have won some national essay contests, so it is also a fairly well-written statement.

Went back to college after almost a decade away. Worked in journalism for several years as a reporter and editor. Currently in leadership role on law-related, very time consuming extracurricular activity.

Have presented solo papers at research conferences.

First year GPA significantly lower (3.0) than remaining GPA (3.7), upward trend every semester.

Extensive recent travel experience.

Additional info & updates

2/17: The craziest thing happened. Berkeley accepted me. And it accepted my classmate/best friend yesterday. The money is going to be hard to put together, but if there is ANY way I can attend Boalt in the fall, that will be my choice. Wow. I cannot believe it -- I had completely written the west coast off my list when UCLA and U Wash WLed me. Since I've always loved the west coast, and the bay area in particular, this is beyond exciting to me.

January brought a generous offer from Illinois (where I would get in-state tuition, leaving me on the hook for only about $7k/year). Unfortunately it also brought a slew of waitlists from schools all the way from Chicago to U of Washington. Yikes. The rejection from Michigan particularly stung, since word is that the dean there likes personal statements and I had thought mine would put me there for sure.

11/23: In at GULC via personal phone call from the dean, who had some very flattering things to say about my PS! Very excited for the decision!

11/11: In at W&L, not really a surprise but a nice way to kick off the season.

Congrats to you too! Yes I will definitely be at Berkeley. You too, I'm guessing? Hard to turn down the money from other schools, but impossible to say no to Berkeley. Not a choice, really. :) So excited!
