Extra Curricular Information

-2 years WE
-some ECs with some leadership, but nothing out of the ordinary I think
-strong PS, at least that's what Dean Cornblatt wrote to me. :-)
-3 academic LORs...perhaps I should send work related ones to the deferrals.

I'm not making my identity too obvious...but I'm not afraid that admissions will figure out who I am. I've tried to be honest and courteous, so what is the point of hiding? I don't understand the paranoia.

Additional info & updates

"Decision" is the day the letter showed up at my mailbox

1-18 So many deferrals! I have decided to let the notice on Northwestern lapse. I'm 99% sure I'd rather go to one of Duke, Georgetown, or Cornell instead, and apps like Michigan, Penn and Chicago need extra attention, not to mention extra meditation about Virginia and my long, lost Boalt app.

1-27 I "passed initial review" at Boalt. I also recieved an alternate wording deferral from Michigan, but I've left those as "pending" for now. And Virginia seems to be hesitating on my file as well. I'm getting no love from the top 10. I assume that the new LSAT policy is making them a little hesitant. As a directly-on-median applicant at UVA, its making me really nervous as well!

2-3 Decided to change the status of Michigan and Boalt. They didn't have to send me notice of deferral, but they did, and I might as well reflect that. Plus...I'm bored.

2-16 Waitlisted at UCLA. What in the world must be wrong with my app? I was seriously considering them, but I doubt I'll hang around on their waitlist for very long. My numbers are extremely strong at UCLA. I need some positive news and FAST. I've had 6 deferrals and now 1 waitlist since my last acceptance 2 months ago. I'm fearing that I botched something or got a bad reccomendation.

3-2 Went to decision at Virginia last night! Hoping for the best, fearing the worst, but at least I'll know something. Did not get the Michigan waitlist email that so many seemed to get. If I get flat out rejected there, I guess it would be Michigan's way of telling me that I suck at life. But I really really don't :-). Anyway...scheduled my trip to DC and Durham for the Georgetown and Duke ASWs (same weekend). Exciting! That has helped relieve the stress of waiting.

3-3 Ugh...waitlist at UVA. I really really wanted that one. Priority waitlist is a little bit of good news I guess. Anybody know how UVA uses their WL? I'm about to get really annoying about asking people to withdraw in 3...2...1...

3-9 Holy cow! Duke Law Scholarship in the amount of $42,000! I went to decision on Monday at Michigan, and was hoping to have word today. But this news in my mailbox might be even better.

3-12 IN at Michigan!!! Via E-mail this morning!

3-19 DING says Chicago...first choice is down for the count. Oh well. Always knew that was likely. Just waiting on one more school. Come on Penn. End my cycle on a high note. I doubt it seriously, but I'm not too worried as I really love my choices anyway.

3-26 I'm back from Duke and Georgetown. Going in I thought if Georgetown came up with something close to Duke's offer, I'd be right back in their camp. After the visits, I'm very confused. Duke was sensational, and now I think Georgetown needs to match Duke 100% to have any chance. Even then...

Well, its Michigan this weekend. I never thought my decision would come down to Michigan and Duke, but lo and behold, that's where I'm leaning at the moment. The most central thing...everybody says that Michigan has a superior placement record, but I can't find the evidence of it. Every study I've seen has the two pretty even both for clerkships and private sector jobs. Both place a similar proportion of the overall student body at various levels of clerkships, and similar proportions at top 50 and 250 firms. People say Michigan is better...I can't find the proof. Right now I'm leaning towards Duke, but if Michigan makes any sort of offer, I'll be up in the air again.

4-2 Back from Ann Arbor...and WOW. I had a fantastic time in Michigan. Enough to make me pick Michigan at no $$$ over Duke? Probably not. I really loved Duke too, though I liked Michigan even more. Now I have to figure out where the critical mass is in terms of money and hope that Michigan comes up with the goods. My guess is something like... (total cost) - (parental contribution + my savings + subsidized stafford loans + expected 2L summer job earnings) = amount. Any thoughts on this equation?

4-9 Hail to the Victors! Michigan offer in the mail today, and now I'm just making sure that I'll get my stafford loans before sending in my deposit.

4-11 Got my loan notice yesterday, and sent in my deposit today, and withdrew everywhere but Penn. I still want to see what they are going to do (probably reject me). But Penn would have to accept me AND match Michigan, so that's unlikely.

4-14 Rejected at Penn, and that concludes my cycle! See you in Ann Arbor!!!

What is up with UCLA and their waitlist? I haven't been able to check my mail since Wednesday, but it seems almost positive that I'm going to get a waitlist letter too after having not heard from them for so long.

Heh, I've been wanting to goto UCLA since I was probably 10 or 11, got rejected as an undergrad. Honestly, it's probably one of my first choices because of the familiarity of it all. Plus, I'd like to stay near my girlfriend since she lives in Los Angeles. Maybe if UCLA knew that I'd actually go if they accepted me, they'd have called me a long time ago?

thanks!

I just visited UCLA over the weekend, and everything looks so nice, though the parking and the housing looks problematic. I'll probably withdraw from Virginia soon, just for you! Oh yeah, I just came back home to the rejection letter from Boalt, oh well.

Congratulations on Michigan! After the deferral, did you send them anything else?

Thanks

...for the info! I'm glad I'm not the only one turned off by NYC. Where do you think you'll end up?

Did you interview at Chicago?

congrats on Mich!

That's pretty neat, do you think you're going to go there? Of course, Georgetown is also amazing... Thanks for your congrats. I wish I had been given the option of going to law school for free, especially at some of the schools I just fell in love with, like UVa or GULC, but I guess I can't really complain about my cycle.

Duke/Mich

I admit, the Duke money must be sweet, but I would have to recommend Michigan the whole way. The campus is incredible, all the students there I've talked to love it more than they can say, and everyone's so enthusiastic and excited there! And granted, the season didn't end on a high note, but the football there is fantastic (I dunno anything about basketball). I didn't even apply to Duke, so I can't judge, but Michigan's treatment of admitted students is princely. :)

UVa money/Yale

Yale's finaid offer... was ok but not great. $100k++ of debt... is not a happy prospect. The fact is that yes, it's virtually impossible to say no to Yale, but if a school I heart as much as UVa came along and said, have a great education for free, it might be possible after all. Then again, I'm acting like I'm going to Yale... saying so to everyone who asks, finding a roommate in New Haven, talking about sending in the deposit when I have the $$$, pinning the handwritten note from the dean on my cork board... I should probably just withdraw. That way, there will be no hard decisions because there definitely won't be any money! ;) I lived in DC intermittently for 2 years about 10 years ago. It was amazing. GULC's campus is really pretty, everyone there was so nice, their intl programs look so fun... aww, now I'm even making myself consider it again!

You should drop me an email instead of us spanning each others' profiles. I'm starting to feel like leaving ridiculously long messages here which would look silly :p
