Decent softs and unusual socioeconomic diversity statement

High school physics teacher- 4 years

I applied in February last year and completely struck out:
5 waitlists 2 rejections 0 admits. Hoping if I apply earlier things will turn out better.....or someone will have to talk me off a cliff

Cost of attendance is for 3 years (tuition only) after scholarship, probability is from LSP, and schools are listed by how seriously I considered them after being admitted. Schools that rejected me (albeit deservedly) are listed at the bottom. Schools that waitlisted me can go to HELL!!! Have some balls!!! Admit or Reject!!!

Admit
14) Texas ($72,000) - Consider (46%)
16) Vandy ($124,000) Consider (42%)
35) Bama ($0) - Strong Consider (70%)
20) GW ($132,000) - Consider (55%)
30) Emory ($74,000) - Consider (56%)
56) UH ($0) - Admit (89%)
47) Florida ($31,000) Admit (<95%)
23) UC Davis ($152,000) Admit (81%)

Waitlist
7) UPenn- Deny (27%)
11) Duke- Weak Consider (34%)

Additional info & updates

9/1- Probably my last post. I LOVE UT Law!!! I am so lucky to have gotten in. Austin is the coolest city ever. I hope I never have to leave.

8/6- I moved into my new apartment and I already love Austin. I got my schedule and I am so excited to start classes. Anybody else going to the fajita night?

7/29- Moving to Austin in a week. My wife finally found a job and we can't wait to get out of Houston. I still can't believe I got into UT!!!

6/22- Nashville visit went great, but UT is the obvious choice. I am sooooooooooooooooo excited!!! I finally withdrew from Bama and Vandy, so I hope somebody who really wants to go their can take my spot. I am signing an apartment lease today and I can't wait to see all the other incoming Lawhorns in August. HOOK 'EM HORNS

6/17- After attending Law Preview this week at NYU, I still have not decided where I am going to school. I am going to Nashville when I leave NYC to visit Vandy for a couple of days. I eventually had to fork over the $750 deposit (after convincing them several times to give me an extension) for more time to decide. I guess that is a lot of money, but not enough to decide my future over. I absolutely have to decide by June 22, because UT requires that you withdraw from all other schools to sign their letter of intent.

UT upped my scholarship again to $7,000/year to "match" my new Vandy scholarship even after they said you only get one bite at that apple. So keep asking if you want more and visiting and asking in person is much more effective than calling or emailing. Try to convince career services or financial aid that you really want to attend, but you are having a hard time justifying the economy of it compared to another school because it is much more convincing to the dean when someone else asks for money for you.

At this point, I would break down the likelihood of my attending each school as:

UT: 60%
Vandy: 25%
Bama: 15%

6/6- Admitted from the wailist at Vandy w/ $20K scholarship!!! My life apparently has to be as complicated as possible.

6/1- Bama scholarship modified (again).... Football tix ordered (mini package A)..... Registered for classes (Sec 1)..... Tuscaloosa here I come!!! Roll Tide!!!

5/31- This Fall, I have decided to take my talents to South Beach..
The South Beach of Lake Tuscaloosa!!! I am sooooooo excited to finally be done with my cycle. Good Luck to anyone still trying to figure it out.

5/25- IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!!! I wish I knew what I was doing with my life. UT sent me a nice Bday card. I wish my wife could find a job, so we could just decide to go there. Austin is sooooo amazing!!!

5/23- Very thoughtful and timely email from Penn letting me know I wasn't going to get off the waitlist. Definitely the classiest rejection yet. I wish I had gotten in there :(

5/23- Visited Bama for the 3rd time. I wanted to see the tornado damage first hand. The damage is mostly in one area away from the campus and apartments I had found previously. I also talked to career services and Dean Arrington. The trip went well and I feel comfortable attending if my wife can find a job.

Austin finally has some teaching positions available and if my wife could get a job there we will probably go. I realize theses two updates are contradictory and I have no idea when I will make up my mind.

5/10- Vandy emailed me today to say that spots are opening up and seeing if I was still interested. Why not? I am sure that is good news to lots of people. I ran the Nashville Country Music half marathon a couple weeks ago and it was awesome. Nashville is super cool and the Vandy campus was beautiful. Good Luck to anybody trying to get off that waitlist.

5/9- UT "matched" my other offers. $5000/year feels conciliatory, but combined with the in state tuition it is a definite game changer. I think this would be the absolute max I would pay for school. I guess I will have to drag this decision out a little longer. Probably headed back to Austin this weekend.

5/4- I sent a two page beg letter to UT today asking them "match" my offer from Bama. I know it won't happen, but I had to ask. I have been leaning very strongly to Bama of late, but that has obviously changed about every five minutes. If UT offers me any merit aid, I WILL GO.

5/3- Of all the odd things, I received an offer for a full tuition scholarship at UH today. I did not actually withdraw from there because they had wanted me to send a supplemental form and I never did. I assumed not sending it would suffice, but the odd part is they admitted me 5 months ago and just got around to offering me a scholly.

4/25- Apartment hunting in Austin went well. Found some places in West U and Hyde Park. I am a little worried about my wife finding a job, but it is starting to look like I will just take my chances on the student loans. I am very hesitant to take GradPLUS loans, but I don't think I can pass up a T14 law degree.

Conversely, I can't bring myself to rule out Bama yet. I keep trying to convince myself UT will pay for itself in the long run, but then I think about coming out of a T50 law school with absolutely no debt.

4/22- Awesome UT visit yesterday. I am really excited to get started. I LOVE Austin!!!!! Headed back this weekend to find an apartment. It's funny that after all the hand wringing, I think I ended up with the perfect school for me.

4/18- Bama full ride and closer to family or UT in state sticker and easier move. I am lost. I have no family or close personal friends who are lawyers. All my friends and family think paying at UT is crazy and all the aquaintences I know who are lawyers say it's crazy to worry about the money. I will take advice from literally anyone at this point. Please message if you have a helpful thought or just to make fun of me.

4/14- I GOT INTO UT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! Now I really don't know what to do.

3/30- Unsurprisingly, rejected at UCLA. Just glad my cycle is FINALLY over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3/29- Waitlisted at USC. I really wish that law schools would have you apply for admission with certain numbers or for the waitlist with lower numbers. Atleast, there would be some honesty in that.

3/25- Sent in my seat deposit and intent letter to Bama. So Excited!!!!!!! I havn't heard from USC or UCLA, but I called both of them and they said it could be mid-May before I receive an initial decision. TO HELL WITH THAT!!!! Even if they accept me I am sure it will be at sticker price, and neither one is that much better than GW. I guess I will stay on the wait list at Penn, Duke, and UT, but I don't really plan on fighting it that hard. Bama seems awesome, and the scholly just makes it too hard to pass up. If anyone else is definitely attending, I can't wait to meet you in the fall.

3/23- Alabama upped my scholarship to full tuition in state or out of state...I think that just about does it for me.

3/15- William and Mary can kiss my ass!

2/28- Only 3 schools left!!! I ABSOLUTELY cannot fathom how it could possibly take this long to make an initial decision. I just realized that tomorrow is MARCH 1st. I sent most of my apps mid September and my last one the 1st week of October. This process is COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!

2/27- Accepted at Emory via mail!!! Was getting a little impatient with this one. $45,000/3 year scholarship..... pretty nice with my awesome GPA.

2/25- UA Law School visit went really well. The combination of the scholarship, the ridiculously cheap rent in Tuscaloosa, and the proximity to friends and family is starting to win me over.

2/16 (again)- Waitlisted at Duke. I am pretty excited about this one. Getting waitlisted by 2 Top 10 law schools is definitely not the worst thing that has ever happened to me.

2/16- Waitlisted at UT. I was starting to expect this based on how long the decision was taking. I am a Texas resident, so perhaps I stand a little better chance of getting off of the waitlist because of the 65% requirement..... I said the same thing to myself last year...... On a funnier note, they sent me the exact same, word for word, email as last year.

2/14- Package from Davis. Nice note from dean, but no scholly :( I don't think they give many.

2/12- Accepted at UC Davis via status check website. Hopefully I will get a scholly offer with the letter in the mail.

2/10- Waitlisted at UC Hastings via condescending email. Have to say I am a little surprised about this one.

1/27- Accepted at Bama via phone call. Also offered 20,000/year scholarship if I stay in the top 40% of my class.

1/24- I am turning in my letter of resignation today. I am really going to law school next year.

1/18- Received my first scholarship offer for $18,000 (6 per year) from UF.

1/18- Waitlisted at Vandy via snail mail. Same as last year. I really thought my interview went well and I was hoping hard for this one.

01/12- Received invite for UF Admitted Students Day, February 25th. Anybody going?

01/10- When it rains it pours. Rejected at Michigan via mail.

01/10- Rejected at Georgtown via email. I have status checked pretty religiously and I don't know why they bothered creating a website. My status was "application completed" and last updated November 22nd until I got my email rejection this afternoon. So much for a holistic review.

01/07- My first waitlist this cycle. If I had to be waitlisted, at least it was a T10 school. Penn was my first choice and I wish I had applied ED there instead of Michigan. Oh well, there's still a chance.

01/03- Finally received GW admission packet as promised in email. Unfortunately, no scholarship letter included. Still super excited to be accepted at T20 hoping for more good news soon.

12/22- Accepted via email at George Washington. My first T20 acceptance. Sigh of relief.

12/16- Admitted at UH via status checker

12/15- Early Decision-No Decision via status checker at Michigan. I am actually excited it is not a rejection. So you're saying there's a chance.

12/14- Cornell email today and status checker. My first rejection :(

11/28- UF letter arrived. I have finally been accepted to law school. I was beginning to think I may have forgot about a felony or something. I am going to law school next year. THANK GOD.

11/16- UF status check says letter issued. Hopefully, starting the cycle off right. Estimates 5-10 days for delivery.

10/28- Received email notification from UT that my ED app has been held for further consideration :(

Congrats on UT. I have similar stats and am aiming for lower t14. I wonder whats up with cornell and georgetown not to waitlist but reject right off the bat.
