I got totally lucky in terms of acceptances and scholarships, but if I had to attribute them to one thing, I'd have to say it was probably the personal statements. I'd just make sure to personalize each essay and definitely do any "Why ____" essays, regardless of how tiring they can get. Also, I know this is way easier said than done, but I would try to get my applications in as early as possible- one of my biggest regrets is that I was a bit late in getting my apps out there.
