UALR over UA
Tuesday, June 13 2006 at 08:00 PM

This is a post I put on someone elses' wall, but it pretty well sums up my decision. If you want more info, feel free to email me: Well...I guess there were several reasons I chose UALR over UA. These are in no paticular order... #1) Better clerkship opportunities during the summer and during 2L and 3L years. You can't exactly do an externship with the legislature in Fayetteville during the school year. #2) I worked in the law library here (U of A) for a while, and just didn't care for the atmosphere. #3) I'm finishing my undergrad at U of A, and I'm just ready to get out of Fayetteville. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice place and all...but it's not "the south." I don't know how to describe it, other than to say that the culture is less "southern," like I was accustomed to, having lived in Northeast Arkansas nearly all my life, and more "Texas." I can't really justify that, and it's probably a personal thing, but I just like the culture/atmosphere of Little Rock much better. This is kind of the same thing as the aforementioned "atmosphere" in reason #2. #4) This may sound stupid, but parking. Seriously...you will never encounter parking problems like you will at U of A. I went to ASU for two years, and thought parking there was bad, but had yet to encounter parking at U of A where you have to park, then still ride a bus to get to campus. It sucks, and UALR has their own parking lot, where the furthest spot is probably 150 yards from the door. This may sound trivial, but when you drive to campus, spend 20 minutes waiting for a bus, 5-10 minutes on the bus, then still have to walk to your building EVERYDAY, it gets old. Umm....#5) The scholarship offer from UALR was better. #6) From all of the attorney profiles I viewed at the biggest firms in Little Rock, a majority of the younger people got their degrees from UALR. I assume this has to do with the fact that they clerk there, and therefore, are more likely to be hired after law school. At any rate...I could probably go on, but this is already probably the longest post in LSN.com history. From the way I looked at it, they are back-to-back in "ranking," and UALR just seemed to be the "better deal." It does sadden me to leave Razorbacks athletics though. I guess I'll be commuting for football games.

ONU

I haven't decided if that is where I would like to go. I did visit it and I thought the facilities were reasonable and the staff seemed pleasant and helpful. The student body seems more laid back than some of the other law schools I visited. The downside is that it is in the middle of no where- there are cornfields on every side. They actually have a significant amount of out of state kids. I am thinking that this may be because Ohio residents can get into other schools with similar rank but with better access to cities. Looking at your numbers, I would hope that you would get some scholarship money from ONU- it's expensive and you are well above their means. Hope that helps a little. Good luck!
