There's no real big secret. I think there are perhaps several key components, though: (1) strong extracurricular involvement/work experience; (2) excellent resume and LOR, (3) above average 2pp. personal statement (which I toiled on for five months) & diversity statement. Other than that: mostly luck. Chuck, checkin' out.

I withdrew from Chicago and Michigan. I haven't withdrawn from UVA yet, but I'm going to. Good luck!
