Extra Curricular Information

MY DECISION:

I want to do public interest law, specifically focusing on criminal justice. Rutgers Newark is the best option I have. For one, it was recently ranked as the 3rd best law school for public interest in preLaw magazine. I attended the admitted students program, and I'm excited to be attending next fall. With in-state tuition and a scholarship, it makes complete fiscal sense to go there over other similarly ranked schools (and even significantly higher ranked ones too). Basically, it comes down to a savings of $60,000 over three years. That's a ton of cash, especially given the salary I can expect after graduating. For these reasons, and several others, Rutgers is the right school for me.

If I wanted to do corporate law, then of course my decision would be different. If that were the case, I would probably be submitting my seat deposit to UConn instead.

I am, however, staying on Fordham's waitlist. It's a great school, and it might just be worth the extra loot. They have several programs that are specific to the law I want to do. Plus I would be able to keep my job, and continue to have an income which would offset some of the additional costs. We'll see what happens.

BACKGROUND:

3 years full-time work experience in legal/public policy field.
Recently promoted.
Fellowship experience.
Internship experience.
A couple scholastic awards.
Student body president senior year at undergrad.

Additional info & updates

***Scholarship info is per year***

3-26-11: Withdrew from St. John's and UConn.

03-08-11: Withdrew from Brooklyn today.

02-15-11: Waitlisted at Bklyn via status checker. My cycle is officially over. Shocked, actually. Thought I would be a lock for the PT considering my work experience. My take is they're not happy with falling 6 spots in the rankings and trying to up the numbers. A 161 LSAT was the 75% last cycle ('09), now it's the median ('10) for PT. I bet they're shooting for a median of 162 for the PT entering class of 2011...

02-03-11: Just declined the offer to be on American's waitlist. My heart's not set on the school, and I'm sure there are those of you who are hoping to go there more so than me. No reason for my name to crowd the list. Good luck.

01-24-11: Waitlisted at American. I have two weeks to decide if I intend to stay in consideration. One school (Bklyn) left, and my cycle is officially over. After that, I have to make up my mind.

01-19-11: Accepted at UConn!

12-28-10: Dinged at GW.

12-20-10: Accepted by St. John's. Now I have some real options. A scholly there is a nice touch.

12-08-10: Waitlisted at Fordham. Honestly, that's pretty good considering my numbers. All I can think is, "So you're saying there's a chance..." If you don't get the reference...well, I feel for you.

12-06-10: First Acceptance! In a Rutgers! Thought I'd get all the bad news first but this feels great. Plus, received a merit-based scholarship. Scholly info is per year, just need above a 3.0 to keep the cheddar for 2L and 3L.

12-03-10: Rejected at Illinois.

10-29-10: Rejected at GULC. No surprise. First decision, quick, like a band-aid.

10-01-10: DONE.

9-27-10: Just submitted to St. John's, one left -- GULC -- on Friday. Then I can sit back and relax.

9-23-10: Went complete at both UIllinois and Fordham. Hopefully they'll review them soon.

9-18-10: UIllinois received my app. yesterday. Ready to submit to American on Monday. After that...only two left.

9-17-10: Went complete at UConn. Apps will be reviewed in the order they went complete, but they wont start till January. At least I know I will be at the front of the pack.

9-14-10: Application received at both Fordham and UConn. Happy to hear from them, but just hope I go complete soon. Finishing up the evaluations for Brooklyn this week. Things are starting to pick up and get busy.

9-13-10: Rutgers Newark application received, should go complete in mid-October based on the e-mail. Too bad they wont start reviewing until November. Brooklyn application now available on LSAC as of today. I'll try to submit by day's end.

Just called and found out the application will be posted "around October 1st." Good luck with Brooklyn's application. It's very straight forward - filled it out this morning.

Yea, weird that they require them. I just asked both of my professors to do it. They completed them pretty quick and said they were painless.

Their application is available on their website. I called LSAC and they said it should be available as of 9/25. Good luck!
