Additional info & updates

chicago has been my top choice law school from the beginning. my lsat is way below median so i think i'm the candidate that adcomms think of when they say "the lsat isn't everything". if you want to get into your top choice law school and your numbers are below median, you need to turn the app process into a full time job. here is a timeline of how i managed to get in!

12-02-07 first lsat sitting, was scoring 168-172 consistently in practice tests

12-19-07 160. BOO! decide to apply for '09 entry instead

06-15-08 second lsat sitting, was scoring 170-176 in practice tests.

07-01-08 164. ugh. decide to suck it up and apply anyway

10-02-08 submitted apps to stanford, chicago, columbia, nyu, berkeley, uva, duke, nu, cornell, gulc, ucla, usc, gwu, uw, emory

10-21-08 nu interview with V&E associate. went well.

10-28-08 under committee review at berkeley

11-28-08 submitted apps to umich, penn, UT, WUSTL, USD

12-08-08 defered from EA at cornell

12-09-08 regular waitlist at gulc

12-10-08 happy holidays email from emory -_-

12-19-08 in at USD, wouldn't attend but glad to have one acceptance

01-06-09 snail mail ding from stanford

01-12-09 snail mail ding from nyu

01-15-09 hold at chi asking for 1. additional LOR, 2. updated transcript, 3. additional essay by 02/13

01-16-09 last batch of apps: vandy, bu

01-26-09 snail mail WL at UCLA

01-28-09 in at GW!

02-03-08 hold at nu

02-06-09 first reserve at columbia, ding from berkeley

02-11-09 email ding from uva

02-12-09 submitted letter of intent indication chi was my top choice, additional LOR, updated resume, and essay to chi

02-19-09 withdrew from usd

02-21-09 email WL at duke

03-17-09 snail mail WL at USC asking to accept place on WL by 04-03

03-24-09 snail mail defer -> reserve at cornell

03-26-09 snail mail ding from penn; was under committee review twice

03-28-09 in via email at UW!

04-03-09 WL via email at UT

04-07-09 in via email at WUSTL, was set on GW but perhaps WUSTL's higher ranking will make it easier to find jobs?

04-14-09 withdrew from UW

04-15-09 WL via snail mail at vandy

04-20-09 hold -> WL at chi (status checker updated, called for decision), submitted another letter of intent indicating chi was my top choice

04-24-09 hold -> WL at nu via email, submitted LOCI

04-30-09 WL update email from vandy, responded to email and attached LOCI which I had sent earlier in response to snail mail WL letter

05-14-09 emailed vandy with questions about WL

05-19-09 email from anna hassander from vandy inviting me to call to discuss questions

05-21-09 called anna, asked questions about WL. she asked me about current plans, and had a nice chat.

05-27-08 in at vandy via email! withdrew from WUSTL, GW, UCLA, USC

06-03-09 emailed letter of intent to chi stating they're my top choice

06-05-09 dinged from columbia via snail mail, wasn't expecting that to work out, so never sent LOCIs to columbia anyway

06-11-09 email from jayme mckellop from chi saying they were cleaning out files and asking if i was still interested and that they'd withdraw my app on mon if they didn't hear from me. just sent a LOCI stating chi was my first choice a week prior, so very fishy. replied stating chi was my first choice

06-17-09 called jayme to follow up on email and make sure my app was not withdrawn. she asked me what my law school plans were and why chi was my top choice

06-23-09 received snail mail ding from cornell. wasn't going to choose cold ithaca over nashville anyway

06-24-09 email from dean perry, accepted at chicago!

Unbelievable that you made it into Chicago. How on earth were your practices 10+ points higher for the LSAT? Were you even timing yourself properly?

Sorry about the first message's seemingly harsh tone. Rereading it made me wonder why I worded it that way. I'm extremely "jealous" at you making it into Chicago off your scores. I'm sure many people are :) so enjoy your time there! I was actually curious though what you think caused that difference in the practices vs. actual testing. Did you get very nervous on test days? I'm helping a friend out who had that sort of problem (he was testing 168s and got a 158 on the actual test) and I'm curious if I can help him test more accurately. Thanks!

Yeah I hear you on the nerves. If I didn't practice under such stringent conditions I don't know how I would have done on the actual exam. I think some people just get the jitters and can't focus on such a life altering test like the LSAT. Other people, thankfully I'm one of them, seem to perform better when they "know it counts". Pretty interesting. You do give a lot of hope though. Your application must have been intensely good and you should be unbelievably happy with yourself for making it into Chicago. If I had to pick one school to go to (outside of Harvard), it would be Chicago.

*chuckles* Don't get my hopes up :) I sure hope you're right about that though. If for whatever reason NU denies me for Early Decision (doubtful, but we'll see), I will be pursing Chicago with a vengeance. Hopefully with my current work I'm doing, and the media/government attention I should get once it's finished, Chicago won't be able to overlook my interest :) Would LOVE to see you at Chicago. Work hard and you can do anything from there. Good luck!

She probably has a hell of a lot more going for her than you could have. She also had a lot of luck.

I'm interested in your post-grad exp: where did you work? How'd you get those jobs, and what did you do in them? Congratulations x 1,000,000 on your acceptance. I envy you for your GPA hahaha, I messed mine up pretty badly
