Extra Curricular Information

Now that the my cycle is over I'll post a little bit more information about myself.

I didn't have much in the form of extracurriculars, other than being an officer in the pre-law club on campus. Work experience was minimal, etc.

Now the catch. Judging by my numbers most people would probably guess I'd be in at Iowa and Wisconsin fairly easily. The problem is that I have a semi-serious criminal record. This is what led to both of my waitlists. I was able to convince Iowa that it was no longer a problem and that is what led to my acceptance off the WL. Anyone who is in a similar situation, I would be happy to explain how I did that over email.

Additional info & updates

(1/24/2008):
Accepted to Loyola by phone and DePaul by big package in the mail. DePaul included the scholarship offer.

(1/29/2008):
Emailed Iowa to find out if I was complete and was informed that I've been placed in the "hold decision category".

(2/6/2008):
Finally got my Loyola acceptance materials with my scholarship. A little disappointed....I was kind of hoping that they would at least match DePaul and make it an easier choice between the two.

(2/7/2008):
Received Wisconsin waitlist in a small envelope. Kind of stings a bit.

(2/14/2008):
Received Drake acceptance and scholarship offer in a large envelope. Kind of nice to hear some good news after what I've been hearing recently.

(2/21/2008):
I am sinking into a deep pit of despair regarding my Iowa application.

(3/9/2008):
Accepted to Chicago-Kent by email.

(3/12/2008):
Chicago-Kent acceptance materials in the mail with excellent scholarship. And so the plot thickens.....

(3/20/2008):
Emailed Iowa to check on the status of my application....waitlisted. This is crushing and is easily one of the three biggest disappointments of my life.

(3/31/2008):
Finally got a response from DePaul. Had sent them a letter detailing the offer I got from Kent and asking for more money. They offerred me an extra $2000/year. Not enough though. Sent a similar letter to Loyola a while back and they responded basically that they do not revise offers. Now negotiating with Drake and will probably end up there barring something crazy happening.

(4/1/2008):
I GOT IN TO IOWA!!!! I really can't believe it. Was accepted off the Iowa waitlist by email today and couldn't be happier. Going to be attending there 100% for sure.

(4/4/2008):
Got a call from Drake. They've increased my scholarship to $24k a year. It's a great offer but its just not enough to get me to give up the education I'm going to get at Iowa.

(4/24/2008):
Got an email from Iowa today. They're offering me a full-tuition scholarship. There is no way my cycle really could have turned out any better than this. This is probably the proudest day of my life.

(May Sometime): Drake offerred me their largest scholarship (I forget the name of it) for full tuition and a 10k/year stipend. Graduating from law school without debt was definitely tempting and I certainly considered the offer, but I think my earning power coming out of Iowa will allow me to make the 10k a year back quickly enough so I politely declined.

(5/23/2009): Finished my first year of law school and things have gone very well. Definitely come full circle since that pit of despair I was in about my Iowa application.

(5/8/2010): Finished my second year. Got a job at a great firm for the summer.

Iowa hold
Tuesday, December 18 2007 at 07:00 PM

I called and found out some info...we won't hear anything until mid-April, after the deposit deadline...and the hold files will not be sent back to committe, theyll be re-reviewed by Byrd...so good news or bad news, depending on how you look at it

I was very surprised as well. I hope the info you got is more accurate. Basically, I called the office and asked about the status of the Hold applications...the response I got was, oh we haven't done anything with those yet, I asked if they would be sent back to committee and was told, no Collins would probably take a look but not until after first seat deposit

Do you know who sent you the email? i believe i got the info from an office assistant, not an admissions director...ps. what worries me is that all of the april decisions on last year's LSN were rejections or waitlists...

That's good news then. Keep me posted if you hear anything from Iowa and I'll do the same.

if it's anything like the illinois hold then it won't be that long, hopefully this one will turn out better than the last.

I apologize if I misinformed you, trivium. I have been placed in their "hold" category. Good luck with Iowa and your decisions! Once again, sorry for the confusion.

Iowa waitlist

Hello:) I went from defer to waitlist. I just got my waitlist letter yesterday.

waitlist
Monday, December 17 2007 at 07:00 PM

I don't remember the exact date I was deferred. I know I posted mine toward the start of when everyone else started posting their defers. I think it was last january or early feb.

Tuesday, December 18 2007 at 07:00 PM

so i guess they have started reviewing applicants in the hold category...maybe we'll hear back before April, have you called to check your status this week?

waitlist
Tuesday, December 18 2007 at 07:00 PM

sorry man, all hope is not lost though...so are they sending out letters to let people know they are waitlisted? or is it assumed all deferrals are waitlisted?

I'll cross my fingers for you if you cross them for me... Your Kent offer is really solid, I'm hoping to hear from them soon. Just remember - it's not over until it's over. I hope Iowa (or Madison) gives you a happy ending!

I just got the letter today 3/24/08... got the email about 5 days ago. I think that's a fallacy... they're still reviewing and making decisions. Good luck to you, I see you were waitlisted, I hope you get in!

Iowa/Wisconsin
Monday, July 23 2007 at 08:00 PM

Are you kidding me? You were waitlisted at both? That's ridiculous. I think I will lose faith in the system if you don't get into at least one of these schools. But you do have awesome scholarships at the rest of these schools. GOOD LUCK!

Tuesday, December 18 2007 at 07:00 PM

Hey, I actually haven't made a final decision on Iowa quite yet, although I did withdraw from those other schools, just right now im comig to terms with going to SLU and am somewhat satisfied with the decision in terms of finances...anyway how serious was your record and did they say there was a chance you'd get off the waitlist or did they give info on what they're looking for in taking peeps off the list?

Iowa Waitlist
Tuesday, December 04 2007 at 07:00 PM

Got the letter today, looks like I'll be joining you on the waitlist. Still have had no word from Kent, and it's driving me crazy...how are you doing these days?

.
Tuesday, December 18 2007 at 07:00 PM

the wash u. waitlist was expected but still disappointing, still havent heard from iowa, not expecting anything positive at this point, at least i can take solace in the fact that I won a $4,000 NCAA Final Four pool last night.

WOW! Congrats! You must be so happy!

Tuesday, December 04 2007 at 07:00 PM

I'm sure it has to do with my so-so numbers...I also applied a little late. Oh well...I guess I'll wait and see what happens. My entire cycle is now really waitlist dependent.
