Extra Curricular Information

Now that my cycle is over and I'm attending my dream school (Stanford!!!!), I thought I would add further information to clarify my cycle and (hopefully) provide help-by-example to future applicants.

I believe my softs were what set me apart:

2011 Marshall Scholar
3-Time National Debate Champion
Published articles in philosophy and information systems journals
Critical Language Scholar- Korean

I also had the normal list of awards and distinctions from my university (top graduate, summa, departmental awards and scholarships, national merit, etc), (IMO) outstanding letters of recommendation, and tons of institutional support. Equally, I worked extremely hard on my personal statements. I basically used my marshall scholarship essay and adapted it for law school. I discussed homophobia, korean culture, and debate. I personalized each essay to the school and wrote a four-page Berkeley PS. I also wrote all supplemental essays and did Why X essays for every school except Stanford, Harvard, Chicago, Columbia, and NYU. If you'd like to read any of my essays, please let me know and I'd be happy to forward them to you.

I also applied early in the cycle. I think this made a dramatic difference.

Please let me know if I can provide any advice or insight into my cycle or your own applications. GOOD LUCK!

Additional info & updates

So excited, just got an email from Berkeley today (12/12/2011) and an admit call from NYU!! I'm floored by the early NYU call, seeing as my LSAT is so borderline.

Oh wow! Northwestern acceptance by email today. I'm shocked; I have no post-graduate work experience.

Dean Deal called this afternoon (1/5/2012). I don't know if I've ever been so excited. Head over heels...gah!!!!!!!

And in at Chicago! This cycle is shaping up to be pretty amazing...and wonderfully weird.

Penn called! The woman who called was exceedingly friendly. A very nice surprise.

And waitlisted at Columbia. Cycle over and I am going to Stanford!

Thank you so much! I have to say, I'm pretty damn thrilled. It is an absolutely amazing school.

@anon: yes, I did an interview in early November for Northwestern. It was with an alumni though, not on campus.

I wish I had your cycle.

Personal Statement Advice?

Hi Actorman13, First, congrats on getting in and completing your first semester at Stanford Law! What a feat! Based on your Extracurricular Information on LSN (thank you for sharing your experience btw), I was really curious how you strategized your personal statement. I'm an Asian American female, studied Poli-Sci at Columbia (graduate of 2011) currently working as a financial consultant. Given that Stanford is also my dream school, I wanted to ask you if you could be kind enough to share your personal statement. I understand that you're probably extremely busy right now as a LS student, but please let me know if this is possible. Thank you.
