Additional info & updates

Apr 9 & 10 - Attended ASW in Streeterville. Northwestern is awesome, Chicago is fun, lots of great students, tons of events. Looking forward to moving.

Mar 18 - Rejected at Hastings, even though I withdrew in December and they acknowledged it. This does little to address their reputation for being unfriendly.

Feb 25 - WUSTL offers $33k over 3 years. Would have outweighed UIUC for me. I withdrew 2 months ago, guess they didn't process it yet.

Feb 24 - Received NU admissions stuff today in a leather portfolio. Most of the info inside is available online. I sent in my intent form a couple weeks ago.

Dec 23 - Withdrew from all other schools. Good luck to those still waiting.

Dec 22 - In at Northwestern! Amazing! Will withdraw from all other schools. Got email this morning, no status checker warning.

Dec 18 - In at Illinois via email, with $45k over 3 years. Great news. Knew it was coming thanks to Dean Pless posting on TLS.
- Also, very friendly call from GMU admitting me. Said to expect packet next week. This may be my last acceptance of the cycle, with two T14s and two UCs left to go.

Dec 17 - George Mason checker tells me to expect a decision by mail in two to four weeks.

Dec 16 - Rejected at UVA via email, no warning from status checker. Wasn't going to get off a waitlist anyway.
- Also, got acceptance packet in the mail from USF. No scholarship, boo.

Dec 15 - Decision rendered at Georgetown. Expecting a rejection, I was happy to get on the regular waitlist. Email came less than an hour after noticing the status checker changed.
- Also, acceptance at USF via email. Expecting USPS packet later.

Dec 14 - In at McGeorge with $45k International Legal Scholarship over 3 years, plus 1L books. Large packet through USPS.

Dec 9 - In at WUSTL! First acceptance of the cycle. They emailed me and gave no status checker warning.

Dec 8 - McGeorge went to decision. Waiting for letter.

Dec 1 - Georgetown status checker puts me back under review, having completed my interview.

Nov 19 - Georgetown asks me to interview with alum.

Nov 16 - Complete everywhere as of a few days ago. No decisions yet, but Cornell and Northwestern owe me responses before the end of December.

Oct 30 - Apps received at all schools. Still waiting for completion at some of them.

Oct 28 - Have applied to all schools on the list. Nothing to do but obsess.

Oct 13 - Completed on-campus interview at NU. ED applicants must interview with admissions in Chicago and are ineligible to interview with alumni closer to home. Campus looked great, very fun trip.

Wow. You are an even bigger splitter than me. I am happy with WL at GULC as well..

Congrats on getting into Northwestern man! I'm supremely jealous. Good luck.

Congrats! I have identical numbers and I'm hoping I have the opportunity to join you at NU. It's a fantastic school. To above: a 99th percentile LSAT score and 5-9 years of work experience for a school that values both, maybe?

My strange admittance

Yeah, I am also pleasantly surprised they let me in. No, I don't want to let you see my PS, cover letter or addenda. I recognize you as trolling me from TLS. I'll respond on the off chance that it actually helps someone else get into their dream school. First, by the time I matriculate I'll have 3.5 years of legal experience, 3 of it with one firm that thought highly enough of me to promote me to Legal Assistant and give me associate-level work. With the exception of my retail work, which was right after college, all of my other jobs required four-year degrees at minimum. I don't know how much my degree helps me do my job, but I do know that I wouldn't be working where I am without it. However, I'm pretty sure Northwestern counts jobs like construction foreman, firefighter or military veteran as valuable work experience, and none of them require BAs. Anyone with this type of work experience should still consider Northwestern. Second, according to LSN they admitted 3 other splitters the same day they admitted me - all 4 of us with GPAs below the 25th. From a mathematical standpoint, all of our splitter numbers are equally damaging to the 25th percentile. My 172 bolsters their LSAT 75th. NU just needed to believe I could do the work, and I guess my statements, interview and LORs left them convinced. And third, I applied Early Decision. In any cycle, weird results can often be explained by showing commitment and interest through Early Decision, even though it offers no formal boost.

I doubt my application package did much, despite all the work I put into it. I think applying ED, over 170 LSAT, work experience and and interview are together 98% of the battle. Apply ED next year if you don't make it this time. Dean Pless posts on TLS under the name 'Pless.' He gave helpful updates and answered questions in the Illinois thread.

you're an inspiration

so glad you got into NU! i'm hoping to get in myself, a fellow splitter. how many LORs did you submit and do you think your interviews helped if it was on campus?

Tuesday, March 30 2010 at 08:00 PM

oh! also, do you think 3-4 years of w/e helps if it's in government contracting?

Tuesday, March 03 2009 at 07:00 PM

I submitted 3 LORs, all from employers. I was not a science major. I think any post-undergrad work experience is good. It might be better if you have some sort of management role, but it doesn't seem necessary. It seems like self-employment can be a drag, since it's hard to get an LOR for it. If you want to get into Northwestern as a splitter, I have to recommend ED. It may not work as well next year, since there's a chance splitters will flood Northwestern with Early Decision apps. But your chances still seem to be much improved with ED. People with better numbers than me are still waiting now, and might be waiting another 2 months or more. I credit my success to ED. Also TLS, which is full of good advice (and lots of useful fear mongering).

Congrats!

Congrats on your acceptance at Northwestern! I am excited for you and hope you quickly adjust to the colder weather. Way to go!

Hey NayBoer, I am URM with almost the same GPA as yours. Currently working in the engineering field and preparing for the LSAT. I know its seems kind of a stretch for me to ask you for your PS, but I thought I better ask than not. If you can send it I will greatly appreciate it, if not that is not a problem, too.
