Additional info & updates

multiple LSAT scores- 157, 159, 171.

Scholarship information for all three years, combined merit and need based.

I will be attending UCLA Law!

I applied to UCLA last cycle with my 157/159 scores and was outright rejected (obviously). I reapplied this cycle with my new score and was waitlisted.
I was accepted off of the waitlist after sending two letters of continued interest. The first I sent upon being waitlisted and the second I sent right after 1st deposits were due. After sending the second letter I was invited to tour the school and meet with an admissions person for a brief interview. The same afternoon I interviewed I was offered admission and after some negotiation was offered a merit scholarship and need based aid.

Some elements that may have played a role in my results this cycle (I have heard from a few people saying my cycle was sub-par for my numbers... I do not necessarily agree all things considered):
-I have multiple scores, two of which are close together. Schools may or may not average, but they do all look at multiple scores.
-I am a re-applicant at a few of the schools. When I initially applied for the class of 2013, I had not done enough research into the process or even into how the whole "game" of admissions worked. I had a cycle on par with my numbers but began doing research and realized that I would be better off holding out a year, retaking and reapplying.
-I attended a school with no prior record of an undergraduate continuing on to law school. The part of the application that shows schools average lsat score/gpa for their undergrads was completely blank. In addition,my undergrad did not rank students and while you can graduate with honors/high honors/other notations, this means very little when it cannot be put into context.
-I am boring. I am from a middle class suburb. While in college I worked and volunteered but no more than an average student.
-My essay, upon revisiting, was rather fluffy. It wasn't a bad essay but I am not sure it really set itself apart from the 7000 other essays that cross the admission committees desks.

With all that said, I am extraordinarily happy to be attending UCLA in the fall. I feel like it is the perfect school for me and am happy with the way my cycle turned out.

Hey Nick, I took the Testmasters full length course which I would definitely recommend. It is a little pricey but I figure I will make that investment back in scholarships I would not have gotten with my previous scores. You could definitely do it on your own though if you don't have the money, you just have to be willing to dedicate the time to learning the test. The most important thing is to take as many practice tests as you can and then go over them. You really need to understand why you got each answer wrong and then figure out why the right answer is right. Testmasters gave me a method for doing that but I hear that buying books like the Powerscore bibles are just as helpful. Another thing I found really helpful was forming a study group. I met up with a couple of people who were also planning on taking the LSAT once or twice a week for two months leading up to the test. We would take a full length timed practice test and then go over every answer together. Sometimes its helpful to have other people to talk things out with. We all ended up scoring within a couple of points of each other. Hope that all makes sense and good luck!

Thanks Thomas! This is actually my second application cycle. I am pretty happy with it and don't think I will be reapplying. I think my ps and lors were good but who can really know? I know that I do suffer from overly average applicant syndrome so perhaps that played a role :)

Hey kachong, Thanks so much! It really depends on what kind of financial aid package they can offer me. UCLA is my local school and I would get instate tuition but the scholarship from GWU seems too good to pass up if UCLA doesn't offer me anything. That said, UCLA is beautiful and definitely hard to resist.
