Extra Curricular Information

For future law school applicants:

1. Choose to retake the LSAT instead of applying early. I applied to half of my schools in November and half in January. My January applications actually did much better than my November ones, and with the exception of PT for Duke or EA for Cornell, there is NO early application advantage (schools lie). 1 point raise to your LSAT score will do more for your application than an early submission. TAKE THE DECEMBER LSAT!

2. Apply everywhere in your range. Admissions can be funky. You may get waitlisted at places you expected and accepted to places you didn't. Pay the money. Apply, especially if t14 is your goal.

3. Do not write a Diversity statement unless you are an ethnic minority. This really is a "PC" way of giving minorities preference. That's all it is.

4. Updates are good. If you have something to announce, email all the schools you applied to! That got me 2 interviews and acceptances to UCLA and Georgetown.

5. Play the financial aid game. Although it seems tacky, let other schools know how much their competitors are offering. I got a 60k scholarship bump with just one email!

6. Don't stress out. Whatever school you go to will be great!

Additional info & updates

1/3 - After filling out my Yale app, I had created this beautiful document about my extracurricular activities. I decided to email it to all my schools, since I hadn't heard anything yet. I received either positive or benign responses. Some were super positive. The Dean of UCLA immediately responded with a request to interview.

1/8 - in at Pepperdine via Status Checker. Financial aid came in the mail 46k per year, which is the cost of tuition and books.

1/16 - in at Cardozo via phone call. Full tuition scholarship.

1/18 - Waitlisted at Virginia via email.

1/28 - Rejected at Michigan via letter dated Jan 25.

1/29 - Sent an update to all the schools who haven't given me a response. Received a request for interview with GULC.

2/1 - Rejected by Harvard via email - not classy. Not getting an invitation to interview, I expected as much.

2/7 - Accepted by phone call to BU!

2/8 - Rejected by Yale via email.

2/12 - Reserve at Columbia via email.

2/15 - Rejected by Berkeley via email.

2/15 - Admit to Northwestern via email!

2/20 - Admit to UCLA via phone call. Dean Schwarz even apologized for the length of time it took to make a decision. :)

2/27 - In at GULC via post dated 2/25! 3 Cheers for January applications.

3/5 - Rejected at Stanford via mail.

3/6 - Waitlist at Duke via email.

3/7 - Waitlist at Vanderbilt via letter dated 3/7.

3/20 - Reserve at Cornell via email.

3/25 - REJECTED by USC via letter?!?

3/29 - Rejected by NYU via email. Waitlist by Chicago. Thus ends my cycle.

4/15 - Got a call from UVA. Accepted off the wait list! Looks like 3 years in the best weather of the East Coast!

*I sent an update to all my wait list schools 3 days before my call from UVA. Definitely think it contributed to the acceptance.

Curious about your moniker and that you applied to Regent. Have you made a decision? Do you think God will call you to Regent even though you were admitted to much higher ranking law schools (by the world's standards)? I am believer, too, and just curious what your thoughts were on the matter.

Great question!

Hi crappyLSAT, I entertained the idea of Regent, and even attended their preview weekend. The people there are amazing, and the professors are extremely intelligent. It's hard because Pepperdine has very similar values, and a lot better ranking. I'm still praying about my decision, but I think T14 may still be where God leads. I've had a few great school visits, but no decision has been made yet. I think God can use me at any of the schools that have accepted me, and I think the places that rejected me where completely god-sends, protecting me from places that would not have been good for me.

What type of update would send while you were waitlisted? And what did your "beautiful extra curricular" doc look like? just curious in case I find myself in a similar position Would you just type it all up in the body of the email - what main points do you think are a must?
