What is going on with your GPA? Those two numbers are almost an entire point apart.

GPA disparity
Thursday, August 25 2005 at 08:00 PM

86 of the last 89 hours I earned were ungraded. So, the bad grades I earned 10+ years ago make up most of my GPA. LSAC is counting the 9 hours of F (should've withdrawn instead of quitting) and my degree-granting school is not.

Good luck

G'luck on your applications. Did you include any explanation for the GPA in a Personal Statement or additional essay?

Explaining GPA to the schools
Thursday, August 25 2005 at 08:00 PM

I originally wrote about 1.5 pages of simple, factual information on my GPA. I then wrote a PS that was unintentionally pre-occupied with explaining my bad grades. I had to write a new essay for the Chicago-Kent Honors Program, and I created a much better strategy. I wrote exactly one page giving the basic facts about my GPA. Since GPA is typically used to predict if someone can get good grades in law school, I then wrote a separate full page providing evidence that I can get good grades. Finally, I wrote the essay with the mindset that I had a 3.5 GPA from a good state-school like U of Texas. The result was vastly superior to my first effort. I feel sad that I didnt think of this idea in October, because I think it would have improved my chances at Georgetown. I did send the new copy to Harvard and Yale; hopefully they will get it in time.

Valpo Applicant

I got a fee waiver from Valpo as well. But my numbers are sort of the opposite of yours. My LSAT sucked (148), but I had a 3.76 GPA from my degree granting school and a 3.67 overall. I was wondering why you think you got rejected by Valparaiso. I have no idea if I'll get in there or not, but they were the first school to send me a fee waiver and because they aren't that far from Chicago, I agreed to apply.

Don't Want To Be A Lawyer?

Then why did you apply to law school?

To study law

I applied to law school to study law; I like to learn.

Good luck

Good luck at the rest of your schools. You'll get into some good schools with your new PS.

USD

When did you hear from USD? Why did you decide to withdraw? Congrats on the HIGH LSAT!

USD

I never heard from USD. I decided to withdraw becuase their tuition plus high cost of living make it unlikely I will choose them over Rutgers.

Hey

Are you attending Kent for sure? I know its not your first choice but I am damn excited. Hope to see you there!

Headed to Kent
Thursday, August 25 2005 at 08:00 PM

With my GPA, unusual academic background, and lack of interest in lawyering, finding a school that was interested in me was difficult. Sure, I would choose Yale over Kent's regular program, but I am still excited about attending Kent. See you there!
