Extra Curricular Information

I will revise and explain the entire "Yale Sux" closing at a later date.

In the meantime, let's all enjoy a joke:

A pirate walks into a bar with a steering wheel hanging out of his pants. The bartender gives him a queer look and asks, "why, sir, what is that for?"

The pirate responds, "YAAAARGGGGH MATEY, it drives me nuts!"

-

Would also like to take this opportunity to say that Staci is my hero and that Shantal should get Dave (Matthews, not the creepy jew) to write her a letter of recommendation.

Additional info & updates

7/14/05

Has it really been this long?

I have a new account here for the 2006 cycle

http://lawschoolnumbers.com/display.php?user=bartleby

and a new LSAT score to boot.

W&L Let me in despite my failure to send in my little "please add me to the waitlist" card (whatever). And I declined W&M.

I plan to ask GMU, USC, and W&L for deferrals to 2006.

4/11/05

Rejected by UMich at my perm address. Will rant and rave about it when I recover from this latest kick in the groin.

4/7/05

Hectic couple of weeks.

Northwestern reject came in an email: and a nice, fuck you to you too Northwestern. Georgetown came in a non-descript envelope and so did the Boalt waitlist.

Oi vey. In other news, did anyone else see that Boalt shot up to #11 and GTown cracked top10 in the USNews rankings?

4/1/05

Uhhmmm, April Fools? :)

3/26/05

Oh William and Mary, you dirty tease, you send me a fee waiver and then Waitlist me? I am thoroughly unamused.

I think I'm at the anger stage of this first waitlisting. I have a letter already drafted letting W&M know what they can do with their waitlist.

I'm sure sanity will kick in and I'll send them back their little green form that indicates my desire to remain on the waitlist, but, to make me hold my breath until June - only to be a "second best" - is quite irritating. I thought for sure I was a shoe-in for old W&M, anyone out there know if they dig the E/C's, or have any other explanation as to why I would get a pseudo-ding from them?

3/23/05

Went to Gainesville last night for, of all things, dinner with the George Mason Dean of Admissions. Relatively interesting meeting - they seemed to be trying to get us drunk (the moment I set my wine glass down, BAM, the waitress was there to fill up - however, this also brings up the point that they did serve us wine and relatively good food.) About 8 admits showed up with 8 guests - including one kid I went to high school with (how completely random).

They did give me a shirt, which definitely moves them up on my coolness list. Dean also mentioned their curve is a 3.0 first year, around 10 people in the core classes (legal writing, research, etc.) and around 70 in the bigger classes (crim/civ law, crim/civ pro, etc.), and that they are not yet done with their scholarships.

Sorry Florida, but another gal has come calling and she pays for my dinners and clothes and, well, quite frankly, she doesn't look like an aligator.

Acceptances, rejections, and the rest of that stuff.

Florida letter came in an in-fucking-possible to open envelope but with nice large "CONGRATULATIONS" as the first word. No money, kind of surprised.

George Mason call came from Dean Richards who asked that I come have lunch with her in Gainesville. Okay, so she didn't invite JUST me, but still, I thought that was a nice touch. Said more would follow by mail, money?
Recieved an email from GMU earlier today (3/11/05) with a CC to two other Floridians inviting us to that lunch. Referred to us as "extraordinary Florida applicants." If I were to hold off on going to law school this semester, I would use my acceptance letters as my letters of rec for next year.
Got my packet and not a single dime offered. Argh. I still think I'll head up to Gainesville for lunch - maybe I'll be able to charm a couple of bucks out of her.

UMich sent a plain, thin envelope to my perm address - which also happens to be my mom's address - on 3/14. The conversation went as such: Mom: "You got a letter from UMich!!" Me: "Is it thick?" Mom: "No... it's just a regular envelope." Me: "They've rejected me mom, don't get too excited." Mom: "I already opened it Matt - they're just notifying you your application is complete."
So, not only did she open the letter, she kept me in suspense for a good 5 minutes. If you're reading mom: I love you to death, but you kill me sometimes ;).

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

More statistical randomness:

My Chances of getting in (how depressing)
1. Boalt (20%)
2. Northwestern (22%)
3. UMich (28%)
4. Georgetown (29%)
5. UCLA (34%)
6. USC (59%)
7. GW (62%)
8. GM (71%)
9. W&M (85%)
10. W&L (67%)
11. Florida (75%)

On another note:

A coworker of mine has been accepted into her two top schools, LSU and Mercer. While I'm glad to hear input on my own apps, you LSUers (is that pronounced "losers"?) out there, leave me some feedback on the whole civil law education. We've purused her stuff, and it appears she has to take the first semester pretty much hardcore civil law, and the next 3 semesters (she needs 3 1/2 semesters to graduate) are much more open.

Thanks for reading, have a great day; or, at the very least, I hope you don't get run over by a bus.

Best of luck to you with Boalt...we all can dream :)

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I really hope to get into GW (and I've prayed on like 4836 stars already..haha) However, American sounds really fun right now also. I guess I'll just have to keep waiting and pulling out my hair. You have a great lsat score and top gpa so you'll be getting a lot more acceptances, no doubt!

thanks

Thanks a lot. It's a ton of fun! Where do you plan on going? A.Arbor? pretty liberal town, I live about 20 minutes from there and work at U-M soccer camps for four weeks in the summer...that's about all the A.Arbor I can take.

re: thanks
Wednesday, July 13 2005 at 08:00 PM

Berkeley, D.C., Chicago, and A.Arbor are all pretty liberal I hear :) I should fit right in with the brand new Hybrid Escape my mom will buy me for graduation. She, of course, does not know this yet.

good luck

and enjoy your choice...your numbers are impressive. Have a blast!

Sunday, July 24 2005 at 08:00 PM

I am suprised at the waitlist from GW as well, trust me. Although I will be VERY suprised if I don't get in off the waitlist. Hopefully you'll have better luck, because at this point it really seems like an arbitrary system of admittance.

P.S.

My GW was kind of late. I'm hoping that doesn't make a huge difference, but, who knows. And thanks for the encouraging Yale Sux. :)

I've written fiction for 15 years and received about 100 rejections for every accepted story, so applying to law school has been a treat. Law school now b/c the work I do for a nonprofit is one step away from law work. Plus, frankly, I'm gonna start a family and need more money and want to do something more interesting. If BU offers me a dime in scholarship money, I am going there. Good luck with your apps.

I bet you get in. They love your number combo.

Re: Yale
Wednesday, July 13 2005 at 08:00 PM

I've read Yale gives rejections via plain white envelopes with no distinguishing marks. If not for the application fee, I would have applied, copied the rejection, and used it for stationary. Maybe next year.

Re: re: Yale

Regardles, Yale still sux.

Re: Yale
Wednesday, July 13 2005 at 08:00 PM

Yale is merely the epitome of this entire system. They happen to be the top school; they happen to employ a wholly unpredictable selection criteria; they happen to be one of the many schools where your class schedule will include Torts, Constitutional Law, and Watching Your Back; and, thus, they happen to be the recipients of my disdain. I'm sure you could say the same about any of the trinity - I'm sure you could even find examples of non-descript rejection letters and backstabbing from Bassackwards University but Yale, above and beyond all others, embodies this system that is the current target of my criticisms. Oh, and as for waiting for the phone rather than the mail: I'm sure you will find numerous acceptances across this forum that came in the form of snail mail. And, unless you applied only to Yale, the need to thumb through the post for acceptances still exists. Consequently, when you open a non-descript white envelope and find a rejection from the top school in the nation, you will be unprepared for it. The least, the very least, they could do is use their letterhead so that you know, "if I didn't get the call yet, this is probably a rejection." Oh, and, Yale Sux :)

Thanks

Thanks for the congrats on UCLA & Georgetown. Moreover, your narative on law school rankings is simply a masterpiece. Frankly, I don't think you have too much to worry about. You have a really good shot at UCLA and USC and not an impossible shot at G-town. Good luck! As far as my Yale app goes, I had some extra anthrax left over from the big scare that I needed to get rid of. Excellent use of it if I must say.

Thanks

... for your post on my board. It's great to hear some encouragement in this frustrating process. Oh, and ... sorry ... but Yale doesn't suck :). I'll let you know if I change my mind when I get a decision.

Re: Yale
Wednesday, July 13 2005 at 08:00 PM

Again, folks, Yale merely serves as a nice face to take jabs at. I am not attacking Yale alone, but rather the system which Yale exemplifies. I consider it rather naive to believe that Yale somehow escapes the law school backstabbing. Certainly, Yale graduates will get good jobs but even among these good jobs there exists a hierarchy. Do you really think #1 and #200 will go onto the same job? Of course not. For that matter, will #1 and #10 get the same jobs? No. Maybe Im thinking of Harvard? Of course Im thinking of Harvard! But not at the exclusion of Yale or most other schools out there. Perhaps my purpose in the original biographical posting left my purpose unclear. This is a plea. A plea to the Yalees, to the Harvardites, and, yes, to the denizens of Florida Coastal prove me wrong. Start by foregoing the urge to slip an Ex-Lax in the coffee of the student just ahead of you on the day of finals. Then, graduate, become influential members of the Bar, and change this system. Oh, and I must not forget, / Yale Sux.

you're a rockstar! Oh, and guess what law school sux?

thx
Friday, March 11 2005 at 07:00 PM

Thanks for the kind comments. Good luck with your apps! Esp. Berkeley! I know you'll end up somewhere great. You probably want to get out of Florida, but UF has a great rep, and if that's your safety net right now, you're in good shape. If you're worried about nasty competition, I keep hearing that Georgetown is cut-throat... and that GMU is way under-rated.

Boalt

Thanks for the support! We may have the same index, but you have a higher gpa and the word on the street is that Boalt prefers gpa to lsat. Best of luck :-)

good luck!

i hope we both get into boalt! my first choice school!!

Thanks and Good Luck
Tuesday, May 24 2005 at 08:00 PM

Thank you very much for the congrats. And, I understand your criticism of the system. I have a friend in 1st year at Yale right now, and she would not take your comments in a negative light I am sure. After all, people should try to be more collaborative and less competitive in the collegiate atmosphere (especially at the graduate level where everybody has positioned his or herself to have a life of comfort regardless of their school or rank). Congrats on Florida and all the best on the rest of your applications.

Floridians take over Boalt!
Thursday, June 02 2005 at 08:00 PM

You ready? I sure am. First, avoid the current Boalt dinglerberry that's around this week. Let me know how it turns out, and if not, I'll see ya at UF in the Fall!

Thanks again
Tuesday, May 24 2005 at 08:00 PM

Hey moot, thanks for the additional congrats. I left an answer to your inquiry on my page. At this time, I am similarly waiting on 10 schools. So fingers crossed for us both. Take Care.

Thanks...

Tuesday, August 02 2005 at 08:00 PM

Hey thanks for all the encouragement! I am really happy to be going to Boston C actually, so I am not longer fretting about law school (well, just a little.) I feel that unless a miracle happens, BC is where I am going to go, and that is very very fine by me. I've already got the mentality that I am going there. Okay, well that's for all the support again, and eh, as far as URM status goes, I think asian male is about equal to white male these days.

Congrats
Tuesday, May 24 2005 at 08:00 PM

Another acceptance!!! It was only a matter of time. And many more to come, no doubt. Congrats on GMU, moot.

UF $
Sunday, July 10 2005 at 08:00 PM

UF's maximum merit scholarship is $4K/yr, so don't fret about not getting it. Money's money, but $4K isn't a huge deal, considering UF's low tuition.

Thanks for the post. I visited Northwestern a while back, and I agree - it felt snobby. Nonetheless, it's still my top choice. But, I'd be happy with Minnesota too. Best of luck on your pending apps! I'll be watching you. ; )

Monday, August 08 2005 at 08:00 PM

Please, please read the explanation. Okay, so you think Yale Rocks. Why? Although I suppose I knew by referencing Yale, rather than "The-practice-of-determining-someone's-future-merely-by-a-single-score-on-a-single-test Sux!" would undoubtedly elicit far morefeedback, I also expected you bright and talented Yaleins to be able to read a few dozen words to find my true meaning. / Matt // My account for the 2005-2006 cycle.
