Did St. Thomas offer you any cash?

St. Thomas offered $5K, renewable. I've decided against them largely because they're not doing the promotional effort Ave Maria is. Schools without full accredidation are a HUGE gamble. Ave Maria will rank at or above 50 easily, so it's a safer gamble (they offered me a mere $3K, renewable).

Gut feeling is Ave Maria is the best school for me. Since I'm a former teacher the quality of the education at an institution is always my first consideration. I've got an additional snag NOW that I did not intend since my boyfriend has expressed considerable interest in following me wherever I go (he's from VA (no, the OTHER half of the state..the mountainy part), I'm from WI). As he is a Microsoft-certified networking guru that may limit me to tech-heavy cities. Ann Arbor can offer me that as can greater D.C. HE won't object to going to the moon, which is nice since in the end it's my decision, but even if Chapel Hill would have me, I think we'd be hurting for work for him. As such, even though early on William and Mary was my first choice...it seems unlikely based on my actual LSAT numbers (I hate getting consistent 163-165 on practice tests only to gaffe miserably on the real one) and the work opportunities there may not be as strong for him. We'll see.

It is, however, not yet fully accredited, but based solely on numbers, when it is (should be next year or the year after, I think, at the latest) it'll start getting "officially" ranked. On some of the unofficial rankings it already ranks in the top fifty. They are working hard to be known...the lack of many grads out there makes them a gamble as does the fact that so few have heard of it...yet. In getting a job it's all about what a firm knows of your school. Ave Maria is the "wildcard" I think for anyone who applies. Even if they feel a strong pull toward it (as I do), it's still a gamble with your future. I could stay at safe Marquette, ranked at the bottom of tier 2, or go to HUGE Indianapolis and be a number and do "better" by the numbers. As such, it's a school to watch, but it's gonna take a lot of us who wish to be trailblazers to make it happen...if I can take the gamble at my age as a re-careerer.
