Additional info & updates

WASHINGTON&LEE - Rejected via status checker. One word "Denied". Ouch! Not a good start. Starting to think that "Non-Traditional Applicant" = "Inferior Applicant"

TENNESSEE - My first acceptance via mail! Looks like I'm going to law school after all! Didn't give me a scholly, but said that I will be notified when they're given out. Is this a polite "No", me wonders? Would NOT consider them at all without substantial monies ;)
*Got scholarship offer in the mail after a couple weeks. $20k a yr w/ "Good Standing". As a resident ($14k/yr tuition), this would be outstanding. As a non-resident ($34k/yr tuition), it's not enough... :(

ST THOMAS - Received my packed in the mail. Presidential Scholarship - full ride with a 2.0 GPA stipulation. They spoke of how their low stipulations create a non-competitive atmosphere. Seems like a nice school in a pretty nice setting, definitely considering it.
*They've offered to pay for up to $300 in travel to visit, and I'm definitely very interested in the school/city, so I'm gonna check it out next month.

CARDOZO - Accepted via phone call. She told me I got "a $45k scholarship". I assume that means $45k a year, so practically full. I was VERY excited to hear that, and hope I don't come crashing down to Earth when I see in the mail "$15k per year for 3 years..." That would blow mightily. For now, very, very, very happy! ***Got the packet... $45k per year! Only need to maintain a 2.95, which they claim is only the top 80%!
*They've offer to pay for up to $400 in travel to visit. I'm down to clown. This is a school I DEFINITELY need to visit before enrolling, as I need to know how sardine-ish I'd feel in NYC. I hope I like the place, because it's a great school w/ a great offer.

WILLIAM MITCHELL - Just got rejected via status checker / email. WTF? This may have been the overqualified-so-we-think-you-won't-come-so-we-won't-waste-an-acceptance-and-consequently-hurt-our-ranking denial. I hope that isn't the case, because if my fiance wants to be in Minneapolis next year, I may have very well accepted an acceptance offer! Oh well, I guess you can't win them all... It hurt :(

WILLAMETTE - Second response of the day, this time via snail mail - got accepted! They are also giving me $24k a year contingent on staying above a 2.9 GPA. First Pacific Northwest school - my favorite region. Although almost a full ride because it's only $31k/yr tuition, I don't think I'd consider this school for less than a full ride. Coincidentally, my fiance got in to Lewis & Clark an hour before I checked my mail, so Willamette is a possibility if I can talk them in to more mula...

CHICAGO-KENT - Wow, third one of the day. This after a week or two of thinking "What's taking so long?" I got accepted! No scholly info yet, bummer. I'm still waiting on $$$ info for Kent & Tennessee now ( Cardozo $45k/yr confirmation), so I hope those come soon so I can get this decision on the road.
*Got the packet today, they gave me two options on the scholarship - that's a first... A full ride w/ $20k per year in 2L and 3L as long as I maintain a 3.25, or a $18k per year with no contingency. Interesting bribery team they got going.

DENVER - Got in via email. No mention of a scholarship. As I've read from other applicants, there is a usually a second email that comes shortly with that info. Like pretty much everyone else so far this year - and from what the website says - I expect a standard $20-$25k a year. Probably not enough to get me to go there. Will they negotiate, that is the question...
*Got $75k as long as I maintain a 3.0 GPA. Not bad

JOHN MARSHALL CHICAGO - "Decision Made" they say via status checker. Why torture like that? I assume I got in (unless I got Willam-Mitchelled again!) and I'm hoping for the full ride $10k/yr stipend that others with my #'s get. Chicago would be nice, and getting paid would be nice! I should get the letter tomorrow, me thinks.
*Yup, got the letter. Full ride plus $10k stipend per year as long as I stay in the top 1/3 of the class. Steep stipulation, but it's quite a sholly to be handing out. They pay it quarterly throughout the school year.

IOWA - I got Waitlisted via status check. Balls. They said they'd look at me again in the "Spring", so who knows what that means. I think I've fallen victim to the 'applying late plague' in a couple cases now... :(

BROOKLYN - Got in via status checker! The bad news is that there was no email or scholly info, and they say the packet could take weeks. I would only consider them with a full ride stipend (which I know they give out), as I already have a full ride at Cardozo. I love acceptances, they brighten my day... ;)
*I got the packet today... no scholly info yet. They say mid-March...

LEWIS & CLARK - Got my acceptance packet from Lewis & Clark today! First time I've heard anything from anybody in over a week! The packet told me I was accepted and that they will reconsider applicants for scholarships in April (they're out, as of now). If I could do it all over, I'd definitely apply earlier. Lewis & Clark is easily in the running if I get a scholarship, but I'll likely make a decision by then...

SAN DIEGO - Got my acceptance in the mail, no scholly info. I hope they offer me something. The beaches just aren't enough, I could use the money...
*Got my letter saying $30k per year... Not too shabby

INDIANA UNIVERSITY - Got waitlisted via mail... :(

PEPPERDINE - They waitlisted me via mail. Two waitlists in less than a week. Disheartening... :(

U WASHINGTON - Silly Washington. Takes forever to send out the mail, then rejects me... so sad...

My #1 determinate is probably $. As I realize law schools outside of the T14 are, for the most part, regional, I also realize that where I go may determine where I stay. Thus, I really want to go to a Pacific NW school, and may also enjoy Chicago / NYC as I could see myself living there. Cali, maybe. Other places are much less desirable and will have to throw me the $ to get me. Can't wait for acceptance letters to start coming in!!!

Non-Traditional

I gotta agree with you about W&L. I got waitlisted only a week after my app was complete. Maybe they don't want old folks there! As for Tenn, they take a while to come up with scholarship offers; I'm waiting too.

W&L is mean ;(

Yeah, sucks to be denied this early in the cycle when you expect to get almost unanimous acceptances. I now expect some schools to reject me simply for being Non-Trad. But that's the admission game! Good luck to you Non-Traddies out there!

I think that being a non-traditional student can be a plus or minus, depending on the school. I wrote my diversity statement based on being an old guy. My experience in undergrad tells me that we old folks really do add to the diversity of a campus.

5 of 7
Friday, January 14 2011 at 07:00 PM

After going 5 of 7 thus far, I'm thinking that I'm not doing too badly. More redonkulousness than I expected - i.e... denied by #98 Wil Mitch :( But also a pleasant surprise in Cardozo.

Information Helps

I made a lot of my decisions on where to apply based on research I'd done through the LSAC Official Guide and on this site. I've gotten pretty much what I've expected in terms of acceptances and $$$. I am a firm believer that free info will help anyone in their decision making, and I hope my data is doing just that. Good luck to everyone else out there in limbo!

We're considering Lewi & Clark...
Friday, January 14 2011 at 07:00 PM

We would really enjoy Lewis & Clark and Portland, but I'm not sure if we'll pull the trigger on another situation by then or not. They say schollys don't come out until April, which kinda blows... :( I just wanna know where i'm going already! I'm sure I'm not alone on that one...

My mail sucks
Friday, January 14 2011 at 07:00 PM

For those of you looking at me to see when they can expect to get letters in the mail, keep in mind that my dates are whacky... i.e., my mail service sucks. I get everything significantly later than I should. For example, the law school in my city... which happens to use the same post office as me, no less... I got a letter postmarked 5 days earlier delivered to me. The same friggin' post office! So, I expect most should expect letters about a week before I did (30 day que means 23, for example)

Pepperdine Waitlist

Looks to me like more confirmation of the theory that W&L and Pepperdine don't care so much for non-traditionals....
