Additional info & updates

Please feel free to PM me here! I hope to see y'all in law school!

Accepted to the SEO Law Fellowship Program on 4/28/19! I will be placed in a firm in NY for the summer! I'll keep y'all posted but those who can apply should! Here is a link to their website: https://law.seo-usa.org/our-program/fellowship/

Socioeconomically disadvantaged background (previously homeless and lots of costly family medical issues)

Reapplicant. Pretty much fell flat on my face first time when I applied in January (APPLY EARLY!!!) [no t14 acceptances].

Reapplied with a higher LSAT score and slightly higher GPA b/c of final semester senior year grades and submitted apps in early October for all schools. Had an upward grade trend and made Dean's List all of Senior Year.

First time I applied, got an interview with Columbia and Chicago but was too late for a Northwestern Interview. Eventually rejected by most of the schools to which I applied but rode the waitlist until the end for UCLA, NYU, Columbia, Chicago, and Stanford.

2017 - 2018 Cycle Recap:
1). Stanford (2) - waitlisted/rejected
2). Chicago (4) - waitlisted/rejected
3). Columbia (5)- waitlisted/rejected
4). NYU (6) - waitlisted/rejected
5). Penn (7) - rejected
6). Michigan (8) - rejected
7). Berkeley (12) - rejected [rejected quickly; this one hurt]
8). Northwestern (10) - rejected
9). Cornell (13) - rejected
10). Georgetown (15) - rejected
11). UCLA (15) - waitlisted/rejected
12). USC (19) - rejected
13). ASU (25) - accepted w/ scholarship but lol at me for even applying to a school I had NO intentions of attending
14). George Washington (30) - waitlisted/rejected [this one still puzzles me but again lol at me for even applying to a school I had NO intentions of attending]
15). UC Davis (39) - accepted w/ scholarship but I should have applied to UCI instead but probs wouldn't go to either.

2018 - 2019 Cycle Recap:

Second time reapplication further details:
^ = applied in 2017 - 2018 cycle
^- = applied and outright rejected in 2017 - 2018 cycle
^~ = applied and waitlisted in 2017 - 2018 cycle
*USN school rank in parentheses
***personal preferences in brackets and excluding HYS b/c those seem more like a dream and WAY out of reach for me.

1). Yale (1) -
Outcome: Rejected via email on 2/12/19. Not surprised but this def feels like I am at the end of my cycle with no real hope for Stanford and Harvard.
Decided to apply on a whim because of constant emails from school. Don't expect to get in, but it would kill me to not know if I even had a chance of admission. Prayers up tho!

^~ 2). Stanford (2) -
Outcome: DLS according to status checker on 4/10/19. I don't have the courage to call admissions and hasten my knowledge of what is likely going to be a big fat rejection by Stanford, but there is some comfort in knowing that I at least made it to second review. I pray that this is a waitlist, and I will WAIT on that WL as long as I can!!!!
Met with Dean Deal at an invite-only law school event in SoCal on 10/4.
Rejected on 1/16/19 from Stanford's Knight-Hennessy Scholarship Program which, though certainly disappointing, was to be expected.

3). Harvard (3) -
JS1 - N/A
JS2 - N/A
Outcome: Rejected via email/status checker on 3/22/19.

^~ 4). Chicago (4) [2] -
UR1 - 10/17/18 (one day after going complete)
UR2 - 11/15/18
UR3 - 12/12/18
UR4 - 12/27/18
UR5 - 1/16/19
Outcome: Accepted via email on 1/18/19. Super stoked on this. Probs one of my top choices!
Met with Dean Perry at an invite-only law school event in SoCal on 10/4.
Invited to Skype Interview on 12/3.
Skype Interview on 12/12
Able to negotiate financial aid package from $15,000 over 3 years to $51,000 over 3 years. This sealed the deal for me and I will be attending UChicago in the Fall!!!

^~ 5). Columbia (5) [3] -
Interview - N/A
Outcome: Waitlisted via email on 2/7/2019. This was a disappointment to be sure, but I am tentatively going to wait on the reserve list.

^~ 6). NYU (6) [1]-
UR1 - 10/8/18
UR2 - 12/7/18
Outcome: Accepted via voicemail (212) area code on 4/5/19. Sorry I can't tell you if I had additional UR date changes because I stopped checking. This was quite the surprise because I was in a class for Chicago's ASW when NYU called.
Received NYU "Hold Tight Email" on 1/24/19. Def not the start of the day I imagined.

^- 7). Penn (7) [6]-
UR1 - 11/16/18
UR2 - 12/7/18
Outcome: Rejected via email on 1/24/19. Not too sad but every ding hurts.

^- 8). Michigan (8) [5] -
Outcome: Rejected on 1/14/19. First rejection of the cycle, so this stung a little. Rejected twice at Michigan, but at least I won't be freezing in AA. Though I hope to be freezing across the lake at UCHI.

^- 9). Berkeley (9) [4] -
UR1 - 10/20/18
UR2 - N/A
Outcome: Accepted - 11/14/18
Visited on 10/10/18 to speak with an admissions officer. Also went to a Public Interest Reception they helped host on 10/5/18.
Officially withdrew my application and declined their offer on 4/16/19 after they rejected my scholarship reconsideration. This one really pained me because I LOVED Berkeley, but I couldn't pass up Chicago or NYU for only a little more money.

10). Virginia (9) -
UR1 - 10/15/18
UR2 - N/A
Outcome: Finally waitlisted via email on 3/7/19. Not surprised and happy to finally receive a decision.
Released from Waitlist on 4/24/19.

11). Duke (11) [7] -
UR1 - 10/29/18
UR2 - IDK (Sorry, I lost hope at Duke and stopped checking about a month ago).
Outcome: Accepted to the JD/LLM in Intntl/Comp La via email on 2/16/19.
Met with Dean Hoye at an invite-only law school event in SoCal on 10/4.
Sorry about not knowing whether or not I went UR2 as mentioned above. Although if I did, it had to have happened sometime after 1/26/19.
Received $81,000 across three years to cover the JD and $21,000 across three years to cover the LLM for a total of $102,000 or $17,000/semester.
Was able to negotiate the scholarship up from $80,000 to $90,0000, bringing their total gift aid offer to $112,000.

^- 12). Northwestern (11) [8] -
UR1 - 11/15/18 (Guessing; checked on this day and status checker said app under review)
UR2 - N/A
Alumni Off-Campus Interview - 10/17/18
Outcome: Waitlisted via email on 2/20/19.
Officially withdrew application from waitlist and further consideration for admittance via email on 3/10/19.

^- 13). Georgetown (14)[11] -
UR1 - N/A
UR2 - N/A
Outcome: Waitlisted on 11/30 without an interview request or any communication for that matter. Might be Yield Protection but idk.
Officially withdrew application from waitlist and further consideration for admittance via email on 3/10/19.

^~ 14). UCLA (16) [10] -
Outcome: Waitlisted on 1/10/19. BYE UCLA!!!
Officially withdrew application from waitlist and further consideration for admittance via email on 3/10/19.

^- 15). USC (19) [12] -
UR1 - 11/19/18
Outcome: Accepted via email on 1/23/19.
(Don't start reviewing apps until beginning of November)
Emailed USC on 3/20/19 for scholarship reconsideration with offers of $104K from BU, $60K from Berkeley, and $15K from USC. USC replied on 3/26 stating that they could not make a better offer at that time given the funds available to them.
Received an unsolicited financial aid package increase from $105,000 to $120,000, though this was after I submitted a form stating that I will not be attending USC in the Fall.

16). Boston University (22) [13] -
Outcome: Accepted via phone call on 1/10/19
Phone number was (617) area code!
Rejected from Public Interest Scholarship but was awarded $40k/year ($120k total) merit scholarship.
Emailed on 3/20/19 for scholarship reconsideration considering $105K offer at USC, $60K offer from Berkeley, and $15K offer from UChicago. BU emailed back on 3/29/19 with an increased offer of $132,000 total aid or $22K/semester.

Chicago or Berk?

Chicago or Berk?
Wednesday, November 14 2018 at 06:54 PM

Hey TheKiaLawyer! I think I'll be going to Chicago, but I am not 100% decided! I am waiting to attend Chicago's (4/4 - 4/6) and Berkeley's (3/14 - 3/16) ASWs to come to a final decision.

Nice

Hi, very thorough analysis! What does JS and UR mean?

Re: Nice
Wednesday, November 14 2018 at 06:54 PM

Hey, stinla! Thanks! So JS is the initials for the previous Harvard Dean or Admissions Officer that would conduct interviews and do phone calls for interview requests and notifications of acceptance. I believe now the initials are KS for the new dean or admissions officer. UR means Under Review. Sometimes when someone looks at your file, your "under review" date might change on your status checker. You can track these under review changes and get a feeling for where you are in the review process, what might be your chances of admissions based off previous cycles' UR movement, and how long until you can expect a decision. Let me know if that helps and if you have any other questions!

Hey @TheKiaLawyer! Sorry it's taken me so long to respond! So, Idk what UCLA's "attitude" is. I think part of my waitlist is due to yield protection but I am not 100% certain. Although, if it is yield protection, they aren't wrong in assuming I would not be attending their school even if they admitted me. I will say that UCLA, and all UC schools, and I believe UMichigan and any other public school for that matter, are legally not allowed to use affirmative action in their admission process, so maybe I am just not that competitive of a candidate for UCLA too. I am pretty damn close to UCLA's LSAT median and 75% I believe, but who knows! There is a TON of luck involved in this process
