Any relevant comments, critiques, advice would be welcomed. I am especially interested in anyone's comments regarding Wharton, Kellogg, and Darden.

Substantial aid from NU, good aid from UVA, a little less from Penn

My non-liberal arts major definitely hurt, for some inexplicable reason.

I'm glad to help if anyone has questions about the process, especially the MBA side.

Additional info & updates

- All apps sent electronically near the end of September
- Planning to apply to the JD/MBA program, which is why I only applied to a handful of schools.

2004 Results: In at NU, ND, Vandy; WL at M,P; Rejected at HYSCCV

2005: Deferred NU from 2004; In at V,P; Rejected at YHS

NU: Notified by email; large binder sent later
UVA: Notified by phone call
Penn: Notified by email; large binder sent the following week

Hahvahd - rejection letter about 2.5 months later, thin white envelope......not sure WTF is going on, as I made to the 4 month mark in 2004, with a lower score and worse ECs. Pretty bummed.

Stanford - rejected the day after I was rejected from Harvard. These were the only 2 that really hurt.

Yale - I don't really care, as I applied just to see if I could get in

I earned a national community service award, and also had another year of good WE....solid, but I guess not significant enough

I do mostly BJJ, and a little boxing now. I've done Wing Chun and Aikido in the past. How about you?

Anon, most of the updates that didn't have significant info changes were done while responding to user comments.

Can't really understand this...

Your numbers seem really really good. I don't even understand how the top schools could have rejected the app...maybe the LSAT? Anyway you are still into some pretty awesome schools, congrats on the achievements!

Thanks, I'm a little confused too. I didn't expect to get into Y or S, but thought I had some shot at H (as they take 3x the people). My LSAT was below Y's median, in H's range, and above S's median. Oh well, I can't complain too much. Where are you planning to go?

Re: deferral from 2004

They do share the info, but mine was a non-binding deferment (I had to pay for this). You are correct in that schools share information and you will get rejected if they know you have a binding commitment elsewhere.

Thanks for the advice and condolences. I didn't think any of YHS were gimmes, but thought I'd get one of them. Oh well. I'm still waiting to hear from UVA and Penn w/r/t finaid. If I had any hint from Kellogg, I'd be just about ready to commit there.

thor, sorry to hear about your harvard rejection. just curious what exactly transpired there last year for you? were you officially deferred or waitlisted? just curious because i was waitlisted last year and am hoping that the worst i could do this year would be another WL. but perhaps i am wrong and that could drop to a ding. oh well. congrats on NU and i hope that kellogg comes through for you.

Thanks barbarac. I was rejected (no WL) there last year, but lasted until the very end (mid-late March). I thought I'd have a chance this year, with another year of WE and a natl. community service award, but no dice. H and S were the only ones that hurt. I applied to Y more for the challenge, and didn't care all that much about the C rejection after getting into UVA and Penn. I'm pretty happy with NU, especially with the scholarship, and am still waiting to hear from UVA and Penn. Good luck with Harvard.

thanks thor. hey are you hispanic and if so specifically what kind. just wondering because i would have thought being a urm would have put you over the top for some of those schools

Re: barbarac

Yes, but multiethnic (I just added more details above in the EC section). Based on what I've seen here and on other boards, I would likely have 2 more acceptances if I was black. Oh well, I can't complain too much. Are you not applying until next year (wasn't sure after seeing your profile)? IMO, your LSAT score will get you into some T14's. Good luck.

what country is the hispanic in you from and what percentage? because i think you need to be at least 50% mexican or black to get affirmative action. but i could be wrong. i will prob apply next year. hopefully the lsat helps out. thanx for the vote of confidence. btw how much money did NU offer you if it's not too personal? merit money?

Re: AA

Not black or Mexican. I don't know exactly how the URM thing works, as the school sites usually have "Hispanic" grouped together. I also don't know about the 50% thing either, as a lot of people will claim it with 1/32nd type heritage. NU was substantical (rather not give a $ amount) merit money.

I've been working at Harvard for two years, and chose not to apply to HLS for that reason. It seems so appealing, but trust me, Harvard's not worth any tears... Too much overinflated ego, too much cut-throat competition. You've got some MUCH better options on your plate. Have you decided yet between NWU, Penn and UVA?

Re: middlefield
Sunday, July 10 2005 at 08:00 PM

Thanks middlefield. I can't complain too much with UVA, Penn, and NU. The thing that pissed me off about H was making it to the last cut last year, but getting cut early this year despite a better score, more WE, and a natl. community service award. I don't mind the competition, but it's not like the other schools are slacker schools either. Right now I'm pretty split between the 3.
