Additional info & updates

Even though I marked URM, I'm Non-URM Hispanic.

ADMITTED
- ALABAMA: Their status checker is not very helpful. In by voicemail, with a subsequent email that mentioned scholarship. Withdrew 3/9.

- BERKELEY: Went under review 10/18. Accepted after missed call and call back to Dean Tom.

- BC: Under review 11/15, decision finalized 12/20. Accepted by email that came 2 days after DF. Scholarship email came on 2/17. Withdrew 4/5.

- BU: No status checker. Admitted by phone call; no money offer came with the acceptance folder. Withdrew 2/7.

- UCLA: No status checker. In by phone call; no money. In March I emailed Dean Schwartz (such a nice man!) about merit aid, and he responded promptly with an offer of $75,000.

- CHICAGO: Under review dates were 12/2, 12/20, and 1/7. In by voicemail and email.

- EMORY: Accepted by mail on 2/26, although I threw out the envelope and don't know the postmark. Scholarship info came with the acceptance. Withdrew 3/26.

- UF: Never went under review, just had a status update to "decision letter sent." Scholarship came a few weeks after acceptance, both by mail. Withdrew 4/1.

- FORDHAM: Went under review on Halloween. In by email; scholarship email came a few hours later. Withdrew 2/7.

- UGA: Went under review some time in early December. The status checker updated to "Congratulations" etc. (but no email to let me know it had changed). I later got in by mail, and scholarship came by mail about a week later. Withdrew 3/9.

- GW: No status checker. In by email; scholarship letter came with acceptance package a week later. Withdrew 4/5.

- GEORGETOWN: Went complete 11/15 -> 11/18 -> 12/1 -> 12/6 (so four updates). Admitted by admitted student website/mail. In February, I got an email that told me I was being considered for money and asked if I was still seriously interested in Georgetown. Received scholarship notification on 2/28. Withdrew 4/5.

- HARVARD: JR1 email on 1/20, JR1 scheduled for 1/24. My application had been held on 1/10. I got in on 3/7 (by missed call/no voicemail and then email) after I had accepted the reality that Harvard probably wasn't in the cards for me after a six-week post-JR1 wait. I think that a long wait after a JR1 isn't a death knell, especially for Hispanic applicants without stratospheric numbers, so if you're one of them, like I am (/was?), don't freak out or get upset when a JR2 doesn't promptly follow :)

- MIAMI: Useless status checker. In by status checker and early-morning email; scholarship notification was by mail and came about 3 weeks later. I withdrew in late January.

- MICHIGAN: I applied on 10/31 and got my status checker 11/8. Pretty speedy for Michigan. I submitted a "Why Mich" along with my diversity statement. In by status checker/admitted student website. Initially, I got no money from Michigan. I emailed in mid-March about negotiating, and the admissions officer told me that scholarships are determined when you're accepted, and I didn't make the cut. Ignoring that, I sent the financial aid office my NYU award, and a few days later, they emailed me back with an offer.

- NYU: Went complete and under review quickly for NYU (UR on 11/11). Admitted by mail. Scholarship by email around 3/10.

- USC: Went under review 11/8 -> 11/18; decision finalized on 12/8 but not sent until mid-January! Decision was by mail. I did NOT submit Rothman materials. Withdrew 3/9.

- SMU: Admitted by status checker, which never went under review. It just updated to complete 10/28 --> complete 1/28, and then to "Admitted" 1/31. Scholarship came in the mail with my acceptance package. Withdrew 3/26.

- TEXAS: In by voicemail with no mention of scholarship, which came by mail a week after acceptance. No status change until after I was accepted. I didn't get a travel stipend, although others with my same scholarship offer did.

- WASH U: Went under review on 12/2 and accepted 12/3. Accepted by email. Scholarship email came on 2/7. Withdrew 3/26.

NOT ADMITTED
- UVA: No status updates after going "pending review" on 11/10. I included a "Why UVA" essay. Rejected by email.

- VANDERBILT: WL'ed by mail postmarked 1/12. I did not fill out the Merit Scholars application or most of the finances questions, and my interviewer was not exactly competent. Withdrew 3/9.

- DUKE: Went under review on 11/15 and did not update until 3/9, which (coincidentally? not so coincidentally?) was the same day I made my LSN public. I was rejected the next day.

OTHER
- COLUMBIA: "Hold" email on 2/2. No decision as of 3/15, when I withdrew, so I didn't even include CLS in the table above.

Regarding URM status, from what I've read, Puerto Rican and Mexican are the two ethnicity's that receive big boosts. However, I believe that Cuban still gets a boost, just maybe not as strong as the two mentioned above.
