Teaching ESL

I didn't teach with an organization, I just found an ad for a school and went. A few caveats: DON'T do what I did. My gf and I got stuck in the school from hell. Teaching way too many classes to bratty rich kids. It's far better to decide where you want to be and get a TEFL certification and move there. You'll be able to find work at a language school, university or make money from private lessons, and won't be indebted to a particular school. If you're going to teach English all day, try to supplement your daily life with something Spanish speaking. The best would be a Spanish speaking roommate or significant other. I taught English all day, lived with my American girlfriend and various other English-speaking roommates, and therefore learned a lot less Spanish than I could have. I'm glad I had an abroad experience in Central America, but wish it had been a different experience. If I were you, I'd try Nicaragua or El Salvador if you want to be in CA. Mexico has some great schools that pay a lot, or so I hear. Guatemala is beautiful, but you'd be competing with too many gringos. I'd be happy to share more if you're interested! Will you be at U of M's admitted student weekend?

Decision

I'm having a lot of trouble with the decision... I think for practical purposes I'm going to Minnesota unless one of the waitlist schools comes through. I'm going to start preparing extra information (additional statements, letters) and hope for the best. I think you should expect to go on reserve at Columbia in the next few days. How about you? Where are you headed? Maybe we'll end up in MN together.
