Extra Curricular Information

I worked to put myself through college, so I didn't really have much time to participate in a lot of extracurricular activities. But whenever I wasn't at work, this is what kept me busy: I was a member of the Asian Pacific Islander Student Association and Academic Success Program and mentored for an elementary school's after school program for about 2 quarters until I had to focus on work again...

got my first ding from whittier today =( surprisingly i'm not that disappointed yet...

few hours later...
it finally hit me---so bummed out that a school like whittier won't give me a chance---soooo sad...i'm thinking if whittier won't even offer me a spot...who will *sob*sob*

i gotta think of plan b...

4/16/06
ok--i'm over my first rejection =) i'm so anxious to find out the rest of the decisions. *sigh* its too late to be all worried now (i guess). what's done is done. I'll just hope that one of the school's will accept me. its all in God's hands now. i'll start studying for the lsat when i get all my decisions.

4/17/06
I called Cal Western to check if my application is complete. I was told that they're still processing A LOT of applications and they'll notify me within 2-3 weeks of their decisions. So yeah--2-3 more weeks of agony.

I got an email from Mark Santa Ana of USF, they'll let me know their decision within 6-8 weeks.

4/20/06
got my rejection letter from george mason today. it was expected so not surprised or anything. i guess no free room and board from my bro in virginia. 2 down, 10 to go.

i just hope I get in thomas jefferson or cal western...

4/26/06
I got Chapman postcard letting me know that my file is complete.

I calculated how much I would have to score just to break a 150 average, and it's a 163. Even if I scored a 180 on my next LSAT, my average would only go up to a 154. You know, I don't even feel sad anymore, its kinda laughable. But I'm not ready to give up yet. I still think I'm capable of becoming a good lawyer. I'm gonna give it another shot and see how far I can go before I give up. *sigh*

05/15/06
6 out, 6 to go. Dang it. I think 6 more rejections are on my way. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. What to do...hmmm. I probably should start studying for the LSAt now and take the October one and apply to all the schools that don't average the scores. HMMMMMMM. Shooooot. If I start now soon I'll have at least 4 months of studying. I mean my overall GPA is 3.1 its not that depressing. It's my freakin LSAT score that's pathetic. Ok--so I guess to all the people who are getting a bunch of rejections right now---we better start gearing up for the next season.

There's this article from Law Journal Newsletter's Law Firm Partnership and Benefits Report, April 2006 issue entitled, "The Conceit of Meritocracy: Does Tradition Replace Thinking" by Roland A. Dumas. For those of you losing hope or feeling down, you should read this article. I would love to post it here, but that would be a copyright violation. Its a long article about a study on how successful associates become in relation to their rank in law school, the law school they attended and their LSAT score.

According to the article,"they were surprised to find out that graduates of 2nd tier schools out-produced those from first-tier schools, and the graduates of 3rd tier schools did better yet. In work quality, top tier graduates, as a group didn't come up to the level of the other associates. They also split the associates into the 'top 10%' of law school class' vs. everyone else to find that class rank is unrelated to productivity or effectiveness."

Okay before all the top notchers out there brand this as a "hater" article, the author adds, "This isn't to say that ever 2nd tier school graduate is better than every 1st tier school graduate, but that on average the groups differed in the counterintuitive direction." Furthermore it adds, "it did debunk the notion that alma mater and class rank are strong predictors of success."

more later---gotta go =) but yeah--check out these article when you start feeling like you can't make it in law school. LSAT scores are just numbers, we gotta prove ourselves once we're in school and once we become attorneys.

Okay, so I only have 2 pending schools who hasn't rejected me. It may all be a rejection--just a matter of time. In fact, they are definitely rejections coz its Loyola and Pepperdine--both reach schools.

I got waitlisted at Thomas Jefferson though. They'll let me know by the end of June if they can offer me a spot. Ahhhh. I so hope I can get a spot. I'm crossing my fingers and toes for this.

Why George Mason? It isn't in Cali and I think its a reach. Also, I think Pepperdine may also be difficult to gain admission into

i have a brother who lives near the school and told me to apply there. he was offering free rent and food if i get in--i know its out of my league but worth a shot just in case

pepperdine
Thursday, March 30 2006 at 07:00 PM

yeah--i'm aware that pepperdine, uc hastings, george mason, loyola and seattle are all far fetched. heck--i even think it'll be hard to get in cal western and thomas jefferson with my scores ...but i'm hoping they'll consider the dramatic change in my grades when i switched from bioengineering to poli sci...i made it to the honor roll in my last years in college

don't worry, you've still got a good chance at some other schools. Be sure to update as you find out more.

reality has set in-- i think need to take the LSAT again and the hard part is--I have to reach the 160's in order for my average to go up to at least a 150. whew--

Rejections...
Monday, April 03 2006 at 08:00 PM

sorry to hear about the rejections, sep calwestern. Are you doing any law related work before re applying?

:(
Monday, April 03 2006 at 08:00 PM

I was hoping that you'd get at least into Whittier, and Westernstate, but I guess no such luck. With my current numbers I'd be happy with even Thomas Cooley. I'm pretty sure I can get a 3.0 by admissions time, and I'm retaking the LSAT but don't expect much improvement, maybe one or two points.

Elon?
Monday, April 03 2006 at 08:00 PM

Have you considered Elon Law? Its a gamble but I think it looks promising

hi guys, i'll look into these schools and see what will work. If not, I will reapply to the same 4th tier schools in Nov/Dec and see how it goes...This time I'll apply early

Hi.. GL with TJSL... any news on Elon, and Cooley? In any other circumstance I would say that going non-aba is a risk, esp since you are quite close to admittance at a 4th tier aba school, however I think Elon will def gain accreditation.

thanks for the tips
Thursday, March 30 2006 at 07:00 PM

I will write them a letter too--anything that would help! There's a TJSL intern at my firm and he told me to call the admissions and tell them that (1) I'm really interested, (2) i'm already in san diego and that all they need to do is call me and I will show up in class even if they don't let me know until the first day of school. I don't know if he's egging me on, but hey, anything helps at this point! So I'll give them a call today and give them a speech...then send a letter expressing my interest in attending. I've got nothing to lose. Let me know how you guys do!!! Are you guys located currently? Nikky, still in the bay area? AMP?

Still no word
Thursday, March 30 2006 at 07:00 PM

Hi guys, i took a break from LSN and LSD, that's why I haven't responded to your comments. Congrats to the people who got in woo hoo. As for me, I haven't heard anything yet. No luck on the call. Its almost the end of June and I'm really nervous. I sooOoooo hope they give me a spot!! I heard from a TJSL student that sometimes they call people on the first day of school too...so we all have a chance until the first day of school!

Still got a chance

You still have time to apply to some other schools if you want.
