Additional info & updates

*Scholarship amounts are per year. Except for USD - 23k only for first year =[[

- 12/14/09 Got scholarship info from Santa Clara - $11,000/yr. renewable only if in top 25%

- 12/14/09 Admitted to Chapman via status checker - hoping to get a full scholarship!

- 12/14/09 "Decision Rendered" via status checker for U Pacific - full scholarship please?

- 12/21/09 Got Chapman letter - merit scholarship = to 90% of tuition; kind of peeved that I didn't get a full scholarship, but I wasn't really planning on attending their school anyways...

- 12/21/09 Got U Pacific letter - Dean's Scholarship of $20,000/yr. and they will pay transportation costs to their Legal Scholars Day - will probably take advantage of that since I live in Texas!

- 1/8/09 "Decision Rendered" via status checker for USD and Pepperdine. Waiting for letter from USD, but I'm pretty sure I'm accepted. Also waiting for letter from Pepperdine; I really want to know if I received a scholarship! I know I got accepted to Pepperdine because I got an email about Wavenet, logged in, and my application status says "Admitted" =]]

-2/2/10 Didn't get my acceptance letter from USD for a really long time. I called them, but they said to allow up to a month for it to come, and they don't give out information about whether you're accepted or not over the phone. I got a letter from them the other day about financial aid, so I assumed I was accepted. Then, the next day, my mom called me to tell me that the acceptance letter was mailed to my house (I live in an apartment at school). Oh, USD.....

No scholarship from Pepperdine =[[[[ but I turned in the Diversity Scholarship form, so hopefully I get something from them!!

Btw....I visited Loyola, Pepperdine, Santa Clara, USF, and UC Davis a couple of weeks ago.

Loyola = horrible!!! I don't want to go to school in a jail like campus. It's a fenced off rectangle in downtown LA and all its buildings are metal.

Pepperdine = gorgeous of course!! The tour guide was excellent and the atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly.

Santa Clara = beautiful campus and super friendly people. This school was the most down to earth out of all the schools I visited. A current law student gave us a tour and she was really nice and cool. I LOVE THE OLD LIBRARY!!! There's a really nice new library, but the library just for law students is so much better cause it's old and comfortable. San Jose is pretty much just like Dallas, but with pretty palm trees and mountains in the distance. Also, it's pretty close to Monterey Bay, which is a huge plus!!

USF = new buildings and nice people. I really liked USF for a couple of reasons. Everyone that we talked to there was very helpful and friendly. The buildings were very new and the layout was excellent. The law library is really big and has a lot of nice features to it. The school is in a nice part of downtown San Francisco; doesn't seem dangerous at all. But, I still wouldn't go to USF because (1) I'm not a city person at all, especially in a major hilly city and super funky houses and (2) USF is not ranked that well....

UC Davis = soooooo old and ugly.... seriously, this school smelled like a bathroom, throughout the whole building. They're building a new extension to the law building, but they really need to fix the old side up!! An old lady gave us a tour so it was boring and slow. They should've gotten a student or at least someone younger and more upbeat. Mostly though, I would not choose to go to UC Davis because it is in the middle of nowhere!! It's about 20 minutes away from Sacramento, but Sacramento is still boring, and about 1 1/2 hours from San Francisco. And, that highway always has traffic or something cause every time we drove on it, we hit traffic, even in the middle of the day!!

So overall ranking of schools visited:
5. Loyola
4. UC Davis
3. USF
2. Pepperdine
1. Santa Clara

I really want to visit USD before I make my decision!!!!!

02/08/10 Decision Rendered on USF status checker - finally! They really are super slow. I would've thought I was an automatic admit, but I guess not?

02/11/10 Got a letter from USF - Waitlisted??!?!?!? WTF?!?!?!?! Are they serious? My LSAT is higher than their 75th percentile!!! Withdrawing my application immediately.

02/15/10 Decision made by Loyola via status checker. I should get the letter by the end of this week. I wonder what it'll say!

03/15/10 UC Hastings sent letter via snail mail saying they're unable to offer me admission. Oh well, I never wanted to go there anyways.

You really should visit USD before committing... I had placed Pepperdine way above USD before visiting because of the location, but USD really took my breath away too. The buildings are much more attractive than Pepperdine's, and San Diego can compete with Malibu any day. The view isn't the same as P's, but the bay isn't very far at all. Good Luck!

Tough Call...

It's a very tough call, something I struggled with for a long time. In the end, personally, I thought USD was the better choice. First of all, I think USD's reputation in the greater San Diego is stronger than Pepperdine's in the greater Los Angeles market, because of P's competetion and USD's USD lack-there-of. Also, I looked at kids who had decided to attend each school after being accepted, on LSN, in the years in the past, and it seemed like USD had a stronger history than P. The campuses are so different too. Pepperdine's view is nice, but I could see the novelty of living on the ocean wearing off, and the facilities themselves were just so so. USD's campus is beautiful; the architecture is stunning. I also like the San Diego state of mind vs. the L.A. one. San Diego residents are notoriously laid back, very "chill," don't stress as much, while L.A. is not that way at all. I hope this helps, the two schools are still both great schools. I had just as many people tell me I HAD to go to Pepperdine as I did about USD, so there is no 1 obvious winner. I hope you let me know what you decide on doing. :-)

it is... or was... I don't think I'll end up there. I'm pretty sure I want to end up practicing in Michigan, and while I've gotten in to better schools, USD included, I'm leaning toward Michigan State because of its in-state reputation, and the substantial scholarship money they've offered. If USD throws me any money, then I'll have a much harder decision.

I've always wanted to go to Pepperdine, but money is a factor. If I got in to Santa Clara, USD, and Pepperdine, with no money, I'd go Pepperdine's way. If I got money then who knows. USD has a beautiful campus though, and a great program.
