Additional info & updates

did most of the optional essays; submitted addendum explaining grades (work and debate commitments resulted in a lot of missed classes - attendance policies in those classes negatively affected final grades); excellent lor's (two lor's supported my explanation regarding grades); ps described obstacles i've overcome; diversity statement described changed ideologies; socio-economic statement submitted to some schools; i think that covers it!

i probably spent too much time putting my applications together at the expense of turning them in early - i'm hoping it won't have a huge negative impact. we'll see!

i also used Anna Ivey for consulting - excellent investment!! if anyone has questions about my experience using her, please feel free to ask.

3/20/06 - received notice of merit scholarship from uva. 12,000 per year for three years

3/23/06 - received UTK acceptance in small envelope.

3/24/06 - received UNC acceptance via email with scholarship offer in separate email (5,000 per year for three years)

4/12/06 - received UA acceptance via snail mail w/large binder including lots of nice materials about the school and community; scholarship offer was included (full tuition for three years)

4/25/06 received add'l scholarship money from UA to cover books and laptop computer

4/26/06 received Emory scholarship offer via email (25,000 for three years)

What are your top choices?

honestly, i would be thrilled to attend any of the schools i've applied to so far. if i were fortunate enough to choose, i would probably choose harvard or yale. assuming they are not options, i would love to attend penn or berkeley. what about you?

choices
Monday, January 09 2006 at 07:00 PM

I guess Stanford would be my top choice, but it's a hail mary I'm not counting on. Outside of Stanford, I'm going to wait to see what I have to choose from, then decide based on visits and scholarships (if any). I don't view the disparity between a couple of spots in the US News rankings as being meaningful enough to pass up the opportunity to enjoy my three years as much as possible and/or avoid some measure of debt in order to attend a marginally "more prestigious" school. We'll see.

congrats! How did they let you know?

Thanks! I received a large envelope via snail mail. It's the first news I've received, so I'm very thankful it's an acceptance!

Congrats on Emory!

Much more good news to come, I'm sure.

thanks

You certainly don't need defending, but I just wanted to add my two cents. Congrats again on all of the acceptances!

UVA: Awesome

Just awesome. Congratulations, man. I think it's just the beginning of really good news for you, but what a start!

You coach it in college, or you do it in college?

We're precise numbers twins.

I was a college policy debater and I coached in the high school urban debate league.

Whoa, I just noticed your UVA scholarship. Was that there before, or did you just get notified? Either way, congratulations. UVA with $ is really phenomenal. Also, if you don't mind: Is the 12K per year or total? Just curious. Some people list it one way, some, another.

duh
Monday, January 09 2006 at 07:00 PM

Ok, I read above that you just got it, and that it's 12K per year. I'm smart. That is really amazing. Congratulations. Are you going to admitted students day?

UVA

Thanks! I am going to the admitted students days in April. I hope you hear good news from UVA soon!

She go by CJ?
Wednesday, January 25 2006 at 07:00 PM

Can't say I know of a girl by that name...what HS she go to? I didn't debate in college because the U of Minnesota doesn't do NDT, just lame parliamentary debate. But I feel like coaching was a better experience, anyhow. Congrats on Virginia. That's huge.

Eh, didn't quite get that good news from UVA: they put me on the general (as opposed to priority) non-res. waitlist. I'm not gonna stay on. Oh, well. Enjoy Admits Days!

Monday, January 09 2006 at 07:00 PM

You're on a roll! Nice work. Are there any of your pending apps that you're waiting to hear back on more anxiously than others? I assume HLS and YLS, but what about the others? Either way, it's got to be nice knowing you have such a great opportunity already in the bag. Anyway, holler.

Hey! I'm dying to hear from Penn and Berkeley. Really, I'm just excited to receive news from anyone at this point. I really want to make a decision and start planning for fall. It's so crazy for me to think that I'll be living in a completely different place in a few months and I still don't know where. It's very exciting!

Thank you for the condolences. My luck seems to have soured a bit, but I still have some cards left on the table, and the current worst case scenario-- going to NU-- is hardly something I dread. In fact, I like NU more the more I read about it. As for my favorites: Duke and NYU are both schools I'm excited to hear from. All of the schools I have still pending would be phenomenal, but for personal reasons, I'm particularly attracted to Duke and NYU. But most of all, like you, I'm anxious to finally know where I'll be living and attending in the fall. Hopefully that will have been decided by the end of the month. I think you have a great chance at Penn, as well as with the rest of your remaining apps; hopefully you'll have nothing but continued good news heretofore. I'm rooting for you!

Thanks! I'm rooting for you too! I went to decision status at Georgetown today. Based on lsn, it looks like it'll either be a waitlist or rejection. Oh well! I'm not nearly as stressed as I would be had I not been accepted to UVA. Anyways, I hope we both get lots of news this week. I'm not patient enough for this process. I'm dying to hear from all of these schools!

Thanks for the sympathy. Getting rejected feels so personal, especially since the schools are privy to so much personal information (well, at least in my case they were). I am starting to get really excited about UVA. I think I'm more likely to enjoy my time there compared to other schools and they certainly provide comparable opportunities, so I can't complain at all. I am anxious to hear from other schools, though. Regardless of the outcome of future decisions, at least we'll both be at very good law schools. I'm so thankful I didn't have to settle on a safety school for lack of other options. I'm sure you feel the same way.

Monday, January 09 2006 at 07:00 PM

Yeah, that's very much how I feel, as well. I was excited when I got the NU acceptance, but I had no idea how important it would prove, and how different this whole process would have been for me without it. Nothing against the other schools, but I would be a wreck right now if they were my only options. But I'm excited about NU, and that opportunity has ameliorated much of the stress about the remaining apps./disappointment about my rejections, as UVA has done for you. Not that I'm not still a basket case. Anyway; best of luck with the rest of the cycle, and take care.

If you need some dings, I got enough to go around. Good times.

Monday, January 09 2006 at 07:00 PM

Also, my condolences about Chicago (didn't notice it when I left the last note). It appears they sent a wave of rejections out. Oh well; almost over. Best.

Finality, finally
Monday, January 09 2006 at 07:00 PM

Well, things are just about done for me. I've decided to defer a year, then go to NU in '07. The money's too good to pass up, particularly considering that I was almost certainly going to go there anyway. Hope things are well with you. Best of luck!

Penn, et al
Monday, January 09 2006 at 07:00 PM

I'll be sure to post my Penn result (assuming I get one). It looks like they're still letting in a few, so maybe there's hope. And I'm not technically committed to NU, so I'm holding out for the slim chance that Penn will offer me something I can't refuse. As for the year off: assuming I stay with NU, I'm going to move to Chicago and work for a year. I'll probably try to get a paralegal job somewhere. Failing that, I'll take whatever decent job I can, and spend the year getting to know the city, having fun, etc. I'm looking forward to it, actually. I didn't get your e-mail-- I can't find in my inbox or spam. Would you mind re-sending it? Best wishes.
