Targets: American, UConn, UW, Maryland, UNC, W&M, Hastings
Safeties: Temple, Santa Clara

10-4-08: Took LSAT

10-24-08: Received LSAT score via email

11-18-08: Letters of rec are trickling in -- one is in, still waiting for the other to make it to LSAC.

12-9-08: Applications are finally all submitted! I know that I'm running late in the cycle; hopefully a few of my target schools will still have spots available.

12-9-08: Mailed certification letters to UNC and UConn.

12-11-08: 2nd letter of rec received by LSAC.

1-15-09: Received email from GWU that I'd been denied early admission, but still being considered for regular admission. They will have a decision on that in mid-February.

1-19-09: Email from Virginia -- rejected. Bummer... I knew it was highly unlikely, but I would love to go to school there.

1-20-09: Realized I hadn't heard anything from Maryland about receiving my application, so I emailed to check up. Got a msg back same day saying it's in review.

1-22-09: Letter from GWU reiterating the early admission denial.

1-25-09: Getting antsy... Haven't heard anything yet except from UVA; really hoping some positive news will arrive soon! How do ya'll deal with this waiting???

1-26-09: Completed FAFSA.

2-2-09: Santa Clara status checker says "Decision Mailed."

2-2-09: Received letter today from Wisconsin, informing me
that I'm on their waitlist. Letter is dated 1-26-09.

2-3-09: Email from Santa Clara welcoming me to their school...

2-3-09: Waitlisted at American via regular mail. Letter is dated
1-30-09.

2-5-09: Accepted at Santa Clara via large envelope - first one!!
$5000 scholarship.

2-7-09: Rejected from Boston College via small envelope. Hmm, that is not good... guess that means I should expect to see rejections from BU, GW, and W&L soon...

2-9-09: Spoke to U of Wisconsin today about LOCI and waitlist. She said that they will begin reviewing LOCI's after April 20th, so as long as I get mine in by that time, then I will be good. Either email or regular mail is accepted, I think I'm going to email it in within the next few days.

2-9-09: In at UConn!!!!!! Small envelope via regular mail... So excited! Nice to know that I'm T1 material, even if it's near the bottom... It's also great to have options, and given that Connecticut students can get in-state residency after 1 year, it's an affordable option. UConn is definitely going to get strong consideration.

2-10-09: Submitted LOCI's to Wisconsin and American via email. Feeling like UW might be my top choice if I can get off the waitlist

2-11-09: Online status checker at Temple has changed from "complete" to "decision has been made on application."

2-13-09: Placed on "preferred waitlist" by Maryland... dammit. Big envelope via regular mail. The good news is that the letter says usually all applicants on the preferred waitlist are granted admission; the bad news is that I'm thinking any financial aid is out of the question for people on that list. I'm going to call the director of admissions on Monday to ask her.

ehhhh.... feeling a little bummed. So far I'm only 1-0-3 for my target schools, with decisions on the toughest schools yet to come. I suppose I can look on the bright side and be happy that I haven't been rejected from a target school yet, but still.... I'd hoped to get into American or Maryland.

Based on how my cycle is going so far, I'm writing off any chance of getting into BU, Fordham, GW, and W&L. I'm holding out slivers of hope on Hastings and UNC, but expecting to get rejected at W&M. So it looks like it's going to come down to Santa Clara, UConn, and possibly one of my waitlisted schools. Which I guess aren't bad options... Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

2-14-09: Waitlisted at Temple, small envelope via regular mail. Wow... I'm floored. Looking at the stats on this website, I thought I would get admitted. I don't know if my PS just sucked or what... The wording of their letter was a bit unnerving, a lot of hot air about whether or not I'm "sincerely interested" in them as a school. Why would I have applied if I wasn't interested???

So.... at this point I'm 2-2-4. Don't know what I'm going to do. Freaking in limbo for another couple of months, at least... Feeling like maybe I should just commit to UConn and be done with all this....

2-20-09: Georgetown status checker has changed from "complete" to "decision." Don't know if anything has come in the mail because I'm in Cancun until Sunday!

2-22-09: Rejected at GW, small envelope via regular mail.

2-23-09: Rejected at Georgetown, small envelope via regular mail.

2-25-09: So... I'm a moron. I totally submitted a "panic application" today to Tulane because I feel like my cycle is pretty much over and I'd like to have more options than what I have right now. I know that my chances of getting into Tulane this late in the game are slim to none, but since I couldn't figure out a better way to spend $72 today I thought, "Why not?"

3-4-09: Rejected at BU, small envelope via regular mail.

3-5-09: Waitlisted at Fordham, via online status checker.

3-6-09: Waitlisted at W&L, small envelope via regular mail. Really surprised by this...

3-9-09: Decision at Duke on 3-6-09, via online status checker.

3-14-09: Rejected at Duke, received letter in mail.

3-23-09: Received waitlist confirmation from Fordham, big envelope via regular mail. Such a tease!

3-26-09: Waitlisted at Hastings via email. Said they would start admitting people off waitlist in May.

3-26-09: Waitlisted at W&M, small envelope via regular mail.

3-30-09: Received financial aid info from UConn.

3-31-09: Submitted (finally) financial aid application online for Wisconsin.

4-4-09: Rejected at UCLA, small envelope via regular mail.

4-17-09: Admitted at Maryland off the waitlist!!!! Got a phone call yesterday from the admissions officer telling me that my file had gone in for review and then another call today informing me that I'd been admitted! No word on whether financial aid is part of the deal, but he told me to call him next week to find out. Now, the question is: UConn or UM? And... any possibility of other waitlisted admissions?

4-21-09: Emailed LOCI to Fordham.

4-22-09: Maryland called and said that my fin aid package is pending. Pushed back the date my first sear deposit is due until 4-29.

4-23-09: Called Tulane and UNC today to check in on applications. UNC told me that all decision letters will be out by May 1st and Tulane said I should hear by the first week of May. I'm assuming I'm dinged on UNC, but really crossing my fingers on Tulane!!

4-23-09: Emailed LOCIs to W&M and W&L.

4-29-09: Notified via email that I'm waitlisted at UNC. Email said that I should be receiving a letter with more info soon.

5-3-09: Received waitlist letter in mail from UNC.

5-3-09: Status on Tulane app checker has been changed to "File is undergoing review."

5-5-09: Email from Tulane. Waitlisted. Yeppppp.... just like every other school I applied to.

6-17-09: Wow... it's been awhile since I've updated this. Got back last week from a trip to the East Coast where I visited UConn and U of Maryland, with stops in Boston and NYC as well. Definitely liked Boston and congratulate those folks who are going to Harvard, BU, and BC. Suffolk (though it's a T4) apparently has a really strong reputation in Boston, that was news to me. Loved NYC, but realized that I could never live there, but still visited NYU and it's a lovely place -- great location. So... down to UConn and Maryland. The UConn campus is beautiful, but I got a better feeling from Maryland. Barring anything drastic on the waitlist side of things (which I'm not expecting to change), it looks like I'll be a Terp this fall!

choices

My top choices so far are my reaches such as George Washington and BC. But realistic choices/targets would be American or Hastings (for the instate tuition). How about you? Hopefully we get into our top choices

thanks

thanks! hope more acceptances will follow soon. Sorry to hear about BC... i am expecting a WL from american as well, seems like no one with a 160 is getting in. hopefully GW and WL will be more kind and accept people with our numbers!

P.S.

i'm looking at your WL's and pretty surprised at all of them b/c your GPA's a knockout...

thanks

Yes, Im very seriously considering uconn. I was wondering what you know of poor job prospects coming out of uconn. I was always under the impression they did very well in New England.

Congrats to you, too!

Thanks! I'm not sure about my chances with GW. Frankly, the flat-out rejection from GMU was a surprise and disappointment. After that, I'm not counting on anything! If I'm accepted to GW, BC, or BU with significant sums of scholarship money I'll carefully consider attending. I was born and raised in Connecticut, my folks are there, and I'll be raising a son while in law school, so there are lots of external factors pushing me toward UConn. It also has a strong reputation and an intriguing Law and Public Policy program ... which I'm interested in. So we'll see!

uconn

Its really tough to find really good solid stats pertaining to job prospects. I am pretty confident that if I go to UCONN i'll have a job. UCONN does very well in CT, RI, and MASS. I think the reason that there are not as many OCI's is because UCONN tends to cater to mid-sized firms rather than larger firms. The mid-sized firms tend not to do OCI. I've heard very few horror stories about students not able to find employment. What i would recommend is trying to get into contact with recent uconn grads and asking them how they feel about employment prospects.

You did not give off a bad impression of UConn at all! Just hesitation which is totally understandable b/c as a fellow Californian, had i not been out east for grad school, i'd have reservations, too. But I did email an UConn alum who did well and was on law review, and he totally raved about the school. Obviously cautioned me about the cold weather haha~ Anyway, let's stay in touch! Best on making your decision:)

I'm pretty sure Temple isn't yield protect. A lot of the people with lower numbers were admitted to the evening or PT. Unfortunately it looks like 2 questions on the LSAT was the difference between an acceptance or waitlist. Thanks on Seton, not sure where I will end up yet but it is definitely a front runner for now. Gl on the rest of your cycle!

Why are you being rejected from so many schools? Were you late in the cycle? Your marks are good enough to get into half of the schools on here yet that is not showing up. I hope things improve!

tulane
Sunday, January 11 2009 at 07:00 PM

good luck with tulane. i think you still have a good chance of getting in even though you applied a little later. Our results have been coming out very similar so far, so Tulane is a good possibility. hopefully good news to come for both of us.

The plot thickens...

for you, that is. So, UConn's wooing you with finaid, huh? My tentative offer only reaffirmed my decision to go to uconn:) i got a really generous grant when i thought those were really only reserved for undergrad finaid packages.
