Extra Curricular Information

Now that my cycle is well over I am going to make this as comprehensive as possible, just as there are so few international students on this site and I hope it may be of help to any future international applicants. For those that wonder about an 'international bump', I'm pretty sure at this point it neither hurts not helps to be international.

I lived in England til I was 18, moved to the states for college.

Very few extracurriculars. Some theatre stuff in college, internship and then job at a human rights non profit. I didn't actually major in anything, but double concentrated. I never took more than 4 classes a semester and did not write a thesis. I also have an interesting medical history(which explains why I never took many classes/did many extracurriculars), for which I wrote an addendum. I was worried this would hurt me, but I don't think it did.

FWIW I had what I have on good authority was a great rec from a HLS prof(who was also my boss), for all the good it did me! Moral of the story: recs from profs are by no means guaranteed to help.

Additional info & updates

02/06/09: In at Columbia by email! (since I am overseas)

02/17/09: Acceptance letter from NYU, dated the 4th Feb!

03/05/09: Waitlist letter from Chicago. Not bothered as there's no way I ever would have gone there over either Columbia or NYU. Withdrawing.

04/15/09: $50,000 Deans award from NYU($60,000 if I do PI my second summer, which I very well may). Withdrawn everywhere other than Harvard, which I will wait out just to see what happens. Sending in my deposit to NYU.

04/17/09: Harvard rejection email.

Cycle over, super excited about NYU, was always my top choice and I'm thrilled to have gotten $$ from them.

You're right, there are scarcely any internationals on LSN, especially if you exclude Canadians. Which country are you in currently? I'll be at the Columbia Admitted Student's Days this week, so if you have questions, I can ask them for you. Unless you're planning to go yourself, in which case we should say hi. I fly out tomorrow night - let me know!

congrats

Congrats to you to. Daring enough to submit only a few applications I see. Let's hope that KB will love us soon enough. Are you visiting NYC schools by any chance?

Columbia

Are you sure you are leaning toward NYU so much more so than Columbia? After a cool-headed decision making process, I've decided that I am more a Columbian man myself. Any anecdotes you want to share from Columbia?

Congratulations

I see you went with NYU - congratulations on the Dean's Scholarship! I'll be just 30 minutes away at Columbia if you'd like to chill sometime.
