So I know I haven't posted on here yet, but after reading other profiles I felt I owed it to some people who may want to know about my thought processes, since I scoped out theirs. The near-full ride at Washington and Lee is always hard to look down on, but yesterday I received a Graduate Fellowship to William and Mary. This knocks the tuition down to in-state tuition, plus a 4,000 a year stipend, and then they gave me an additional 3,000 in scholarship on top of that. This is pretty damn tempting to jump on considering the chance to work on projects with faculty and take an advanced course in the first year.

I'm under review at all of the ones I haven't heard from yet, but I am assuming GTown is a "no". I'm going to hold out hope for Cornell, but I'm still not sure whether paying full tuition at Cornell is worth throwing away a graduate fellowship at WM or a near-full ride at W&L. Of the ones that I am into right now though, I feel pretty confident that W&M is the front-runner.

Edit to add: Got the acceptance from Wisconsin earlier today in an email. Only ones still out are GTown, Cornell, Notre Dame, and Indiana

Talked to Cornell on the phone this morning, they said that a decision probably wouldn't be made until late March/ early April. I hope it comes before then because that gives applicants very little time to make decisions with full information with deadlines looming.

I have to be honest, I really want to go to Cornell, but I don't expect to get in. I think I'm in great position either way, but, man, would it be nice to get in there.

Got my scholarship information from Emory today. It was more than I was expecting, which is always a nice surprise. I've been lucky to receive so many viable options.

Went to Williamsburg last weekend, first time I've been in the area. I got a great vibe from the school, people are generally very friendly and quite non-competitive. Students approached the Professor when class was done and notes are compared. The area is pretty cool with Colonial Williamsburg running right through the middle of campus. Overall, very happy with what I saw.

(3/18/10)
Put on reserve at Cornell. From what I can gather it means I need to submit further information; there should be more details outlined when I get the letter in the mail in the next couple of days. From what little I've heard from others it is almost a pre-waitlist list. If anybody knows anymore about it please let me know!

(3/29/10)
Cornell wants updated grades, seems like it is almost a waitlist until mid to late May. It sucks learning so late, but it is what it is. Trying to negotiate with some schools on the scholarship and its been difficult, but I have a few schools that are willing to work with me, so hopefully something comes out of that.

Long and hard decision between William and Mary and Emory. Finally went with my gut and decided on William and Mary. (This is barring an acceptance from Cornell in May; if I get waitlisted, I will just withdraw.) I'm happy with the decision, though it was a tough one. I'll wait for Cornell and see what happens!

Wow, our cycles have really played out pretty similarly. I have the same thoughts as you about Cornell, I want to go, just don't know about the money. Right now, W&L and Illinois are my frontrunners, followed closely by W&M. I don't feel like there's that much of a difference between W&M and W&L and W&L would be a lot cheaper. Holding out hope for Georgetown and Cornell, other T14s are not happening haha. When did you apply to Cornell?

Are you going to the Admitted Students weekend at W&M? I'm really considering it but I've never been in the area, so it's nice to see a good review of the law school.

Thanks! I'm going up after my spring break and I'm really excited. Good luck with Cornell!

So, are you leaning towards W&M still? I'm going crazy trying to decide, but I really loved W&M when I went and visited. It seems like a perfect place to live and study (though housing isn't quite as cheap as I would have hoped). I have the same offers to W&L and Emory as you, but I feel like W&M is more well-rounded in terms of placement and opportunities. Then again, any of the schools are great.

Thanks! We should meet up if you come. I just felt like anywhere else wasn't going to give me as good of an opportunity to practice in the Mid-Atlantic/DC. Plus I loved the campus. Good luck with your decision, it looks like you have a lot of good options.

Your cycle went very similarly to mine, and you decided the same way (W&M) on the same day I did, with the same possible exception (acceptance to Cornell). I'm actually at the point where I don't know if Cornell would be worth the extra 150k even if they did let me in, but I feel like they owe me an up-or-down vote either way :). Also, look at W&M's employment for 2009. The stats are even better under close scrutiny. 37% of the class (70 of the 191 graduates) went to firms of at least 100, while they also placed a really good number (15+%) into Federal Gov't. Clerkships, and nice PI positions.

Thanks

for weighing in. It was a hard call, but I'm remaining in Texas for many of the reasons you listed. Looks like you had an interesting cycle too. UT would have been a great shot. You can always transfer!
