PS, out of the box, don't explain my poor GPA. Mainly speak of my career in government and why law school would aid me in my pursuit of certain life goals.

I have worked for the Federal Government for over 5 years since graduating from the University of Florida. I am hoping this will help counter-balance my crap GPA.

Additional info & updates

10/17/05 -- It seems to take forever for my applications to get to where they need to be. So far of the 6 schools I have applied to, only 4 of them have recieved and acknowledged I have applied. Perhaps I am just being impatient. Florida State however seems the most student-friendly. They send you a website allowing you to log in and check your application status.

Can anyone out there with experience tell me if 5 years of work experience will help deflect my not-so-good GPA? Or will the work experience factor only come into play if its over 10 years or so?

10/21/05
Received my letter of acceptance from Florida Coastal for fall of 2006. It came in a white, business envelope. They offered me $5,000 a semester as a "Governors" scholar. This one of my 3 safe schools (NOVA and John Marshall being the other two.)

10/25/05
I think I am going to apply to more schools which lay in the top 60 to 100 range. I know which schools are safe, however perhaps I am selling myself short by applying to mostly safe schools and should instead keep applying to higher rated schools and hope to get lucky.

Starting November 1 places such as Loyola Chicago, University of Miami, and Northeastern are schools that are now on my radar.

10/27/05
I am leaning more and more towards Georgia State and UNLV. I am switching my application to UNLV to part time in hope that will help increase my chances of getting in. Georgia State would be best though for personal reasons. However the more I compare my statistics to those who have gotten in the past the more stressful this whole process becomes.

12/2/05
OK, just got off the phone with Florida State and a decision has been made. However they refuse to tell my fate over the phone, a letter was mailed out Weds of this week. Does anyone know if this is a good thing, having such an early decision, or a bad thing? I haven't seen anyone rejected yet from FSU and its too early to be waitlisted I think, or am I just getting my hopes up?

If anyone has any experience in early letters of notification, please give me your opinion. thanks!

12/12/05
Received my rejection letter from FSU last week. Even in rejection, they were still quite nice about it. I have contacted Drexel making sure my file was complete and they have told me that my decision is in the mail. The conversation with them basicaly went the same as when I called FSU, so I am expecting the same result. Hopefully one of the top 100 schools I have applied to will let me in. If not, I have a really tough decision to make.

12/15/05
After not receiving any mail from Drexel I again called their admissions office. I was asked to hold and then transferred to one of their Assistant Deans who then notified me of my acceptance.
Question remains, this school has no history in law, and I have been accepted into their inaugural class. How would it then compare to the other schools I am applying to or is there simply no way of knowing how Drexel will end up?

12/22/05
The University of Florida just emailed me saying they have decided to hold any action on my file. I assume this means I have been deferred. Getting into UF is a long shot, but I am going to try and get some people to call UF on my behalf and see if they can influence them to take a chance on me.

At least this is better then what FSU did where they seemed to not even look at the rest of my file and made their decision based solely on my GPA.

1/23/06
GSU is starting their decision process today. Hopefully the status of my application there will be determined in the next few weeks.

3/02/06
Nova sent acceptance via email. No word of a scholarship yet.

I talked to someone in admissions. I was told that you could write an addendum saying that you would like to be considered for part time if full was not available. congrats on your acceptance! what about stetson?

I think that one way to predict "how Drexel will end up" would be to look at the previous teaching experience of the professors. If the teachers came from good schools, Drexel may end up doing really well (Stanford jumped up in the list by taking teachers from Yale, Harvard and Columbia). Also, you may want to look into why Drexel is opening a law school and where they got the money... large endowments sometimes do a lot!

Law School Reputation
Monday, January 09 2006 at 07:00 PM

My Uncle is a Senior Partner at Foley & Lardner in the mergers and acquisitions division. He told me that firms look mostly at what your GPA was in law school. If you look at Foley's new associates, they have a bunch from Georgetown, but also Marquette. I chose to attend Drexel because the university proper has a reputation, I have the ability to clerk for a justice before I graduate, I don't have to pay for it, and I will be the founder of several student organizations. My advice is to take the school that will give you the least amount of debt, and study your a$$ off once you get there. You have to demonstrate to a firm that you are willing to work the 80+ hours per week the first few years as an associate. If you decide to go to Drexel, send me a message. We have much work to do to make our reputation. I want to hit the ground running.

Drexel Accredit
Monday, January 09 2006 at 07:00 PM

First, let me start off by saying, GATOR CHOMP. That being said, I am not put off by Drexel's accreditation status. You may know that Las Vegas law only recently got accredited. Drexel has the talent, the money, and the good students to make it happen (and it is happening in record time with the ABA officials described as "excited" by the prospects). With which party are you affiliated? I have some contacts with both. If you decide to come to Drexel, let's start the Drexel Bi-partisan politics association and get the PA governor candidates to do their debate at the new school. Like I said, I want to hit the ground running. Check out ABAnet.org under the student section to check out what the requirements for accreditation are. You will see that Drexel isn't doing anything funky to mess it up, and the co-op program exceeds the clinical studies requirement. I got your email, but I have been busy with job interviewing etc.

How did you find out that GSU has started to review apps? I can't get through on the phone.

My status has said "complete ready for review" since early December. Is yours reading "under review" or something? Did Arkansas give you any loot?

I can't believe what FSU did to you or UF. I guess they are all becoming huge numbers whores now. Sigh, I really financially needed to get into one of those and now my chances aren't looking so good.
