Additional info & updates

Didn't go final anywhere till mid to late January, really worried about applying so late in the cycle...

--------------------------
01-25 Wow, that was quick. First admit just showed up in my mailbox in France - W&M with a generous Graduate Fellow offer. Very exciting, and the in state GF tuition and stipend is enormously tempting. Huge sigh of relief to already recieve an admit from an excellent university. Hoping more are on the way, but this is a great start...

02-12 In at BU via a nice personalized email

02-16 In at WashU via email

02-19 In at GW with a really nice handwritten note from the dean and a huge scholarship offer. Made my day considerably better. Also, flash drive from WUSTL.

02-22 Priority WL at GULC via email - really bummed, the first T14 I've heard back from. Worried about what the future holds...

02-25 Berkeley rejection via email - ouch. I did apply incredibly late, so it was somewhat expected, but it still stings. On the plus side, also got an email offering 114k at WUSTL to soften the blow.

03-06 In at UCLA via an email alluding to a letter I haven't yet recieved, since I'm in France. Incredible news, but given that it COSTS MONEY to apply for financial aid at UCLA, I didn't bother applying in time for the March 2nd deadline assuming I'd been rejected or WL since I hadn't heard back. This is unbelievably frustrating - UCLA is an incredible university, and their academic climate is ideal for what I want to study, but I don't know if it's possible without financial aid. Granted, it's my fault for not applying earlier... but honestly, HOW AND WHY would a University set their financial aid deadline BEFORE they inform admitted students? Infuriated.

03-09 In at BC via snailmail ; scholarship information still pending (I hope...?)

Also WL at UVA via email, big bummer. Locked out of the T14 so far, feeling really down.

03-11 Spoke with a very nice woman on the phone from UCLA's Financial Aid office. Explained that though it's my fault for not filing for the March 2nd deadline, I'm abroad and haven't been able to access my tax records (and thus get things in following my admit) cause everyone I know stateside is out of town due to a death in the family. She assured me that I've still got a shot for aid if I get things in quickly. Warming up a lot to UCLA (the Williams Institute is phenomenal) ; somewhat apprehensive about the frightening state of California's economy though.

03-12 $60k at BU via snailmail (along with some spiffy post-it notes)! Looking like my best option at the moment (UCLA at out of state sticker = suicide, and WUSTL's awesome scholly doesn't make up for my uncertainty about its placement outside of the midwest and atlantic). That said, I'm still keeping fingers crossed for the six applications I've yet to hear back on...

03-15 UR at Penn

03-22 UR x2 at Penn, and UR at Duke

03-31 WL at Duke. Still hoping to hear good news from Penn, but not feeling too optimistic. This has been a bit of a rough cycle. Blah.

04-07 WL at Penn. That's pretty much the end of my cycle, unless Texas NYU or Cornell comes through with a surprise offer - and it seems unlike that they'll be getting back to me any time before August based on how slowly they've been processing my application.

Now on to torturous deliberation - BU with $$$ or reapply next cycle? Extreme let down.

04-27 Held at Cornell via snail mail today. Also just got an email out of the blue from Minnesota yanking me off the WL and offering a full scholarship. Wow. This cycle has been very strange. And here I was almost certain I'd just work abroad for another year then reapply next fall. Tough decision.

05-27 In at Cornell via email! I'd mostly resolved to work another year, but this makes the decision quite a lot more difficult...

07-01 IN AT UPENN via phone call!!! It's been a long and frustrating cycle, but in the end I got into my top choice and couldn't be more thrilled. Wow.

168 will get you far, especially with your GPA!

No kidding

$1200 for a tiny studio apartment in Greenwich Village in a city that I don't even like? There is no LRAP worth that. Palo / Cambridge / Chicago / Berkeley are expensive enough! Good luck, sir.

A 168 gives you a great shot into all but the top six. And you still have an okay shot to the top six. Good luck.
