Additional info & updates

11/05/09 - So after doing some research on TLS, I got the bright idea to check the mailings area of W&M status checker (it takes a scroll down to see-which I hadn't done), and I read "Congratulations! Admit Packet Mailed 11/04/09." It feels great to get my first acceptance. I'm headed to law school! (And my fears of having some fatal flaw in my application have been quenched.)

11/06/09 - In at UVA! Email from Jason Dugas to give him a phone call, and he delivered the good news over the phone. He was very personable and easy to talk with.

11/09/09 - Received W&M acceptance letter and scholarship offer: $22,200 per year. Equates to in-state tuition and then some. Graduate Fellow program. (Gotta keep a "B" average)

11/10/09 - Under review date changed at Duke from 10/6/09 to today. Dunno why the date update but I think a decision should be forthcoming. GULC under review date is 10/28/09. Hoping to get UVa acceptance letter in the mail tomorrow.

11/12/09 - Duke status and GULC status were both updated to today's date, both remaining "Under Review." Complete at Penn. From the sound of it, their ED decisions aren't due until 12/31, and since I'm regular cycle, I expect a decision no sooner. Received UVa acceptance packet in the mail with nice note from Jason Dugas and a small one from Dean Trujillo as well.

11/15/09 - Email acceptance from Duke (admissions packet received 11/21/09)

11/16/09 - Decision rendered at Georgetown. Acceptance via snail mail received on 11/21/09. Nice handwritten note about PS too.

11/17/09 - Call from Dean Schwartz with acceptance and merit scholarship! With the tuition hikes, I'm not sure what the end result of the scholly is, but honored nonetheless. :) Admissions packet received 11/23/09.

11/28/09 - Noticed that I went decision at Cornell on 11/24/09. Said to wait 10 - 14 days for decision via snail mail.

11/30/09 - Held over to regular applicant pool at Cornell. Gave me the option of being considered in that pool--I don't think I'm going to take it. If I'm not someone they want to accept in their EA process, then I won't likely get the scholarship that I'm looking for. And with $48,000/yr tuition, that's the only way I'd go. Anyways, not too sure how to read this, as I was figuring that I was in for sure. But two things that might have resulted in the partial ding: 1) I still hadn't submitted an addendum explaining my point increase from 1st to 2nd LSAT--was planning on doing it, but hadn't got to it; and 2) No why Cornell essay. Kind of a bummer, but I'm interested in seeing who gets in through this EA process now. Good luck to everyone hanging in there. :)

12/1/09 - Under review at BYU as of yesterday. Also, withdrew app from Cornell. As stated above, with the deferral, I just don't think my chances of a scholly (or even an acceptance!) are that good now, and I don't want to waste my time or anyone else's.

12/3/09 - Under review at Penn.

12/9/09 - Withdrew from W&M today. Grateful for the offer, but have realized with current acceptances, there's no way I'd go.

12/11/09 - Status checker dates changed both at BYU and U of U.

12/14/09 - Dry spell approaching a month. Hope to hear some more good news soon. :) Hope you do as well.

12/16/09 - Under review at Chicago today. :)

12/30/09 - Invite for phone/in-person interview with BYU. Scheduled for 1/5/10.

1/5/10 - Call from Dean at U of Idaho. Full ride. :)

In at BYU today as well after conversation with Dean Hernandez. Asked about one of my addenda and why I'm considering BYU and then accepted me. Said I've been awarded a "sizeable" scholarship and the amount would be coming in a couple weeks with the admissions packet. Also requested that I do my due diligence in choosing a school, pay attention to how I feel on campus visits, and make choosing a law school a matter of prayer. All great advice.

(Edit: changed dates to 2010 - still getting used to new year!)

Also noticed that Penn status checker UR date changed to 1/4/10.

1/7/10 - Dinged by Harvard via email. Not fun by any means, but we'll roll with it and be glad that the decision of choosing the right law school for us will be one school easier to make. :)

1/12/10 - In by phone call at Penn! Info coming in mail in a couple of weeks.

Also received admissions packet from GW with acceptance letter and scholarship offer. The packet was well organized too. The scholarship amount includes first year housing expenses at a campus single housing unit, but since I'm married, I don't qualify. So the offer is really $90,000 or $30,000 per year if I keep a 3.0 GPA. Posted the 105 amount because that was the original offer.

1/13/10 - Invitation to apply for James Wilson Scholarship at Penn. Brief essay required.

1/18/10 - Sent the Penn essay.

1/22/10 - Full tuition scholarship offer received from BYU. Dean Hernandez's personalized letter was a nice touch.

1/29/10 - Waitlist email from Chicago today. Not preferable, but it could be worse! :) They said I could send in a Why Chicago? essay and updated grades, and I will be doing that in the next few days.

2/2/10 - Received the Yale rejection today via snail mail. Another, "Oh well."

2/11/10 - In at U of U via phone call from Dean Aguilar.

2/18/10 - Berkeley rejection via email. If nothing else, through this process I've learned how to spell Berkeley.

2/19/10 - Duke scholly in the mail today--$60K. Nice.

2/25/10 - Sweet scholarship from UVa today. Call from Jason Dugas with the good news. Will update when know exact amount (way better than Duke's). They're still adding in financial need.

3/1/10 - UVa scholarship came in the mail today. 30 K a year, and this doesn't include need based aid yet. Pretty excited!

3/4/10 - Received the James Wilson scholarship from Penn!

3/21/10 - UCLA upped the ante in response to UVa's recent scholarship. With cost of living taken into account, they are almost identical in three year cost now. Decisions....

4/13/10 - Just returned from a visit to UVA, BYU, and Penn. Loved Penn and their cross-disciplinary approach, but Philadelphia is just too much for me and my family. BYU has got a lot going for them, and full tuition would be nice, but I would be an underdog all over again. Absolutely loved UVA and will likely attend barring a miracle acceptance from Stanford.

4/15/10 - Got the waitlist letter from Stanford today. Dated 4/12/10. My gut told me it was coming (and that fact that I hadn't heard back in 6 months contributed). Will ride it out as long as necessary.

4/21/10 - Withdrew BYU application - deadline had come and gone already.

4/29/10 - Tried to bargain a little bit more $ out of UVA this week to no avail. They are getting more seat deposits than they planned on. (I wonder what this will do to the class size?) Nevertheless, I submitted my seat deposit to attend UVA, and passed on the six figure scholly from UCLA.

All the Fee Waivers
Sunday, February 08 2009 at 07:00 PM

Can I ask how you scored so many fee waivers? In particular Washington and Utah? Let me know. Thanks

Saturday, April 25 2009 at 08:00 PM

E-mail UVA admissions and ask them for a fee waiver. Trust me, you will get one.... well worth the 3 minutes. :)

bah i have no idea honestly
Tuesday, March 24 2009 at 08:00 PM

i just assumed all schools accepted it (except for stanford, which is strange). UVA sent me a merit fee waiver today though, just in case you were interested. i'll let you know if i find anything re: UT. cheers!

Good Luck Man

Pulling for you man- I am watching your cycle closely. Let me know how your Sep test scores come back.

Best of luck to you :-)

Why the switch from accounting to law?

Saturday, October 10 2009 at 08:00 PM

Best of luck to you as well. Do you have a favorite?

Monday, June 29 2009 at 08:00 PM

Hey doubleT13. Honestly, it all seems miraculous to me. I'm the praying type, so I guess that is what I'd point to first and foremost (although I realize this isn't a satisfactory answer to most people out there). By way of a more secular explanation, I'd just say that the straight (LSAT/GPA) numbers -- despite what the overwhelming majority of people tend to say on this site -- don't have to tell the whole story. My academic record is stronger than what the plain GPA value would otherwise suggest, which I accounted for (along with my ridiculously troubled history of standardized testing that has thus far been comically unpredictive of my academic performance in the classroom) in an addendum. That along with some strong recommendation letters and a flawless transcript in my master's program may have reassured them on the academic potential side of things. Regarding the diversity/ unique contribution to the law school consideration (i.e., the other primary concern for adcomms), I just went for it in the personal statement, describing my somewhat unusual passions (which are backed up by my resume, awards, and recommendation letters). In sum, if the LSAT is low, make the rest of the package strong (if you can honestly do so, that is). Admissions officers aren't dumb; if you can make a strong enough case for yourself academically and in terms of your unique voice, they will sometimes make exceptions to the general rule. Hope that helps.

Thanks

Thanks, I think I have decided I am going to apply to Yale, I just have to write their 250 essay thing now. Hopefully I can get it done before it is too late. Good luck!

Thursday, August 13 2009 at 08:00 PM

New LSAT scores any day now.... : )

Nice LSAT
Friday, October 09 2009 at 08:00 PM

Good job buddy, I'm proud of your LSAT score...You're gonna have a great shot at Stanford. Good luck!

Thursday, August 13 2009 at 08:00 PM

Hey nice new score!!! I'm a glutton for punishment I guess....going in for round three in Dec. haha

Saturday, October 10 2009 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on the new score man. Sure wish I had your GPA!

Hopefully we can show these liberal arts majors a thing or two, but seriously good luck to you as well.

UCLA
Friday, September 28 2007 at 08:00 PM

Thanks! I got an email saying that I went complete about a week ago. Looks like you go to BYU. I do too!

Thursday, October 01 2009 at 08:00 PM

Yea, one of them's Mandarin (barely). Best of luck to you too! I'm sure you'll do great.

UCLA
Friday, February 27 2009 at 07:00 PM

Nothing much to report. I was called last week by Dean Schwartz who let me know the good news. Good luck on UCLA as well all your schools

Sunday, September 06 2009 at 08:00 PM

Thanks! You as well! And congrats on your fee waivers! How did you pull all of those off? LSAC waiver?

You too!
Sunday, September 06 2009 at 08:00 PM

Good luck to you as well. Congrats on all those fee waivers too. Are they from an LSAC waiver?

Saturday, March 28 2009 at 08:00 PM

Thanks :). I actually do not know how long my application was under review, but I did get a complete e-mail towards the end of September. That means I was probably in the first batch.

U.Va
Saturday, July 25 2009 at 08:00 PM

I'm really excited to be in. If money weren't an issue, I'd withdraw everywhere else and call it a day. Honestly, if Virginia gave me one dime in grants/merit aid, I'd be looking for apartments right now. You're a lock with your numbers. Good luck!

Thanks!
Friday, October 24 2008 at 08:00 PM

For the congrats! I think you have many to come :)

Thanks
Monday, September 21 2009 at 08:00 PM

Appreciate the encouragement. Looks like you should have no problem this cycle.

UVA!
Friday, October 09 2009 at 08:00 PM

congrats on W&M and UVA. All that work is gonna pay huge dividends for you and your family.

:)
Wednesday, August 19 2009 at 08:00 PM

Thanks! These acceptances are validating my complete neglect of my schoolwork at the beginning of the semester to get my apps out as early as possible. Congrats on UVA! Are you a Virginia resident?

haha
Friday, October 24 2008 at 08:00 PM

Yea, I just feel a bit better protected showing them as I go along. Nice job with your early acceptances!!

Thanks!
Sunday, January 04 2009 at 07:00 PM

Was quite surprised they started rolling out decisions this early. But am thrilled, as I love Michigan and it definitely ranks amongst my top choices. Good luck with your cycle as well!

Wednesday, October 21 2009 at 08:00 PM

Yep. Just need some time off from school to finish my PS/DS. Then hopefully by mid-December I should be in. Good luck with your apps.

Wednesday, October 21 2009 at 08:00 PM

And by the way, what are you gonna do about your CPA? This 1 year work experiece requirement is probably going to prevent me from getting certified..

Thanks!
Friday, February 27 2009 at 07:00 PM

And congratulations to you on your acceptances. I submitted non-binding early decision to UT.

Thanks
Wednesday, October 21 2009 at 08:00 PM

Good luck to you to Mr. Big GPA. Surprised you didn't get a priority track invite. I'll trade you Duke for UVA

Monday, June 29 2009 at 08:00 PM

I thought I wold have closer to full as well. My LSAT is higher than I have listed but my GPA lower. Good luck the rest of this cycle. Are you in-state for UVA?

Saturday, October 27 2007 at 08:00 PM

Thank you for letting me know. I appreciate that.

UVA!
Monday, June 29 2009 at 08:00 PM

In at UVA as well as of this morning!

Wednesday, August 19 2009 at 08:00 PM

Thanks! I'm probably the most shocked person about all of this. I mean, my numbers are pretty good... but I certainly didn't think I was an auto-admit :)

Thanks!
Sunday, September 06 2009 at 08:00 PM

We'll see if my excitement over the JR1 is warranted this week. Congrats on UCLA though, that's a nice 120K!

Congrats on UCLA!
Wednesday, October 21 2009 at 08:00 PM

Nice job with the UCLA scholly! Too bad their tuition rates are going up through the stratosphere. Still, $120K can assuage the pain a bit:)

No ED?
Thursday, October 29 2009 at 08:00 PM

How come you didn't ED? If you don't mind me asking...

Confused...
Saturday, October 27 2007 at 08:00 PM

I really don't understand Cornell's logic here... guess it is a yield protect, but why not offer $ in that situation. Anyway, consider it a minor bump in what is otherwise shaping up to be a fantastic cycle. Best of luck!

Thanks for the well wishes
Wednesday, June 17 2009 at 08:00 PM

As to Iowa v. UVA, money will be a consideration. So if Iowa offers full and UVA offers nothing, I might. Anything different than that, probably not. Congratulations on what looks to be a great cycle, btw. I foresee 2 probable top 5 acceptances for you.

congrats!
Tuesday, November 03 2009 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on a fantastic cycle so far!!

Iowa
Sunday, February 08 2009 at 07:00 PM

I would attend Iowa only if the financial incentive makes it too hard to give up. I actually like the school more than Illinois. Ask me again when the acceptance packet actually arrives and I see if money is coming with the deal. Way to bat 1000 so far. You are well on your way.

BYU
Sunday, February 08 2009 at 07:00 PM

Same- I think decisions are coming soon, or so rumor has it.

Thursday, June 11 2009 at 08:00 PM

Hope you get in your top choice! I visited Stanford and it is gorgeous, your numbers sure make you a great candidate!

Penn
Saturday, January 03 2009 at 07:00 PM

Probably 3 weeks or a month. Good luck!

Sunday, August 02 2009 at 08:00 PM

Thanks for the congrats. My last UR for Penn was 11/12, but I think that was an update from sometime in late October. Good luck with your cycle, you should be fine.

Thanks
Tuesday, December 11 2007 at 07:00 PM

thanks for the congrats. impressive numbers. good luck on the rest of your cycle

Chicago
Friday, September 28 2007 at 08:00 PM

Review date was around Thanksgiving and then updated around 12/14 ish.

Wednesday, October 21 2009 at 08:00 PM

Just curious as to the vibe you get from BYU law? The $10K/year tuition makes it such an attractive option...and with your scholarship, it'll probably be free. Congrats on that.

Congrats on BYU
Sunday, February 08 2009 at 07:00 PM

Way to go man - I am sure it will complicate things for your decision process, but it is a great option to have. It sounds like the exact same advice I was given, without the sizable scholarship bit.

Monday, September 28 2009 at 08:00 PM

Thanks for the well wishes on my cycle. You've appeared to clean up very well so far, so that gives me some hope. I'm just praying that applying late doesn't hurt my chances for admissions offers or money.

Friday, December 11 2009 at 07:00 PM

We're not quite sure. Duke is our first choice at this point, but hopefully there'll be at least one or two more options among Harvard, Berkeley, UVA, Michigan, and Chicago. I'm not quite sure how that will turn out though. I'm sorry to see that Harvard dinged you. Did you get a JR1 at some point? Where are you leaning?

Good question
Friday, December 11 2009 at 07:00 PM

I'm not quite sure yet. We're playing our cards close the table. Hopefully more information to evaluate (acceptances, scholarships) will help us make a decision. Where are you headed this weekend?

No idea
Wednesday, October 21 2009 at 08:00 PM

Can't really say that I'm "leaning" anywhere right now. Obviously cost, prestige, career goals, and career opportunities will all play a factor. When we get the list narrowed down a bit my wife and I would like to visit some of them. Give us a report on the visits to your different schools!

George and Penn
Friday, December 11 2009 at 07:00 PM

Congratulations on the latest round of acceptances! Any leanings one way or another?

Harvard
Friday, December 11 2009 at 07:00 PM

Yeah . . . funny how we should be in the exact same situation. Oh well. It'll all work out.

views
Friday, December 11 2009 at 07:00 PM

So, is it petty of me to reload your profile multiple times each day just so you can be one of the "most viewed" profiles on LSN? We should chat soon--NV said you had a good time this last weekend.

Dividends
Friday, December 11 2009 at 07:00 PM

Dividends indeed! I'm very grateful I chose to retake, as I'm sure you are. If we hadn't, we wouldn't have received so many great opportunities. That being said, I think there is tangible evidence that three times has hurt my cycle to some degree (especially with Michigan), but it's still working out great.

Thanks!!
Friday, December 11 2009 at 07:00 PM

Thank you! I was pretty thrilled when I got the call. BK mentioned he's writing a letter for you to Wharton. That would be SO AWESOME! What are the odds you get in? With your substantive work experience, I bet you have a good shot. Is the GMAT waived in lieu of the LSAT? When you do get accepted, it would be really, really tough to turn that down. What an opportunity! Keep me posted. :)

Waitlist at Chicago
Friday, December 11 2009 at 07:00 PM

Don't worry about the waitlist--after all, your not-as-good-looking doppelganger was already there. I'm sure Chicago will figure out that they really want two of you and entice your attendance with some serious $$$. :)

Duke Scholarship
Friday, December 11 2009 at 07:00 PM

Hey--congrats on the 60k from Duke! That's awesome. Hopefully something like that is coming my way soon. Does this affect your leanings in any way?

SWEET!!!!!!
Friday, December 11 2009 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on the UVA scholly! That should be a pretty awesome deal once need-based aid gets tossed in. Certainly this affects your preferences quite a bit, barring some huge offer from Penn, Chicago, or something. Let me know.

UVA v UCLA
Friday, December 11 2009 at 07:00 PM

Wow! Tough decision! I'm glad you're making it and not me. How does this change things? Is the UVA visit basically going to make your decision? Good luck!

Stanford/Berkeley
Wednesday, September 16 2009 at 08:00 PM

Eh, not really, but I live in the Bay Area and I want to go to the Berkeley ASW next weekend before I withdraw. At this point, for me, it's down to Stanford (vs. Yale if I get in).

Yale
Wednesday, September 16 2009 at 08:00 PM

Yes, it would be cool. We'll see. My guess is I get the WL, but you never know.

Choices...
Friday, October 09 2009 at 08:00 PM

Thanks for the congrats. So...we're down to the wire here, have you decided where you'll be in the fall?

Stanford Waitlist
Friday, December 11 2009 at 07:00 PM

Hey man! Sorry about the waitlist.

Friday, December 11 2009 at 07:00 PM

It's good to see the "A" next to UVA on your profile now!
